  • Zagreb. Eventually

    August 20 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Very quiet night. Up and ready to face the day. Almost immediately we go straight up into the woods. It doesn’t last long and have some enjoyable riding in the ridge. Then we hit the bigger roads and the fun ends. Quite sketchy in places and though there is an occasional bike path, it’s not much. Stop for lunch after last big hill and ride forever to get into Zagreb and our Welcometomygarden hostess. Used to be a hostel. Verica greets us and we share a drink before settling in and then heading into the city by tram. Have a walkabout and pizza dinner.Read more

  • Across the border to Croatia

    August 19 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Quickly pack up as the sky is threatening. No rain but at least we get moving. Find our way to Croatia border and just breeze through. As we ride along, hills seem closer and land greener. Ride to Varazdin, what used to be capital of Croatia (centuries ago). Gelato lunch and pick up food before heading to nice and quiet rural campground. Very nice set-up; complete with well stocked kitchen. Nice fish dinner.Read more

  • Nagykanizsa

    August 18 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Rainy night gives way to a sunny but cool morning. Manage to dry out tent and head back along the lake. Veer away from the lake and thankfully all the cyclists! Ride through marshland as we head towards the border with Croatia. Stop in bustling Nagykanizsa for groceries and then to our campground outside of town. Nice little set up complete with a field of noisy sheep.Read more

  • Around the north side of the lake

    August 17 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Continue along the cycle path around the lake. Quite busy with day riders and those who seem to be touring around the lake. Pass through a few resort towns, flush with wine. Quite the grape growing region. Clouds look threatening but only a few drops fall. Have a bit of trouble getting a campfire but end up with a fine one, right next to a terrific gelato shop!Read more

  • Lake Balaton

    August 16 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Hopping from one lake to the next today. It’s a tad bit cooler and less hilly so easier riding. Have lunch by the lake - also quite low but much bigger. Continue on around the lake to our designated campground. Quite busy and are given a tiny little plot. Do check out the water - can get about waist deep but it feels nice.Read more

  • Westward into the hills

    August 15 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After many months of going east, we head WEST out of Budapest. Really we are trying to go south but today it’s mostly west. Relatively good bike lanes but it’s slow leaving the city. Finally get out into the country and it’s very brown and dead. It’s been a rough summer. Hot day and we have a few hills. Find ourselves among a lot of dead corn, sunflowers and healthy looking grapes. Make our way to Lake Valence. Very low water levels. Finally find a viable campground. Expensive but it’s a place to sleep.Read more

  • Somewhat hectic ride into Budapest

    August 13 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

What looked to be a short and easy ride into Budapest, became long and somewhat hectic. Lots people out and about, on any types of transportation. Finally made it to campground; generally with the city. Cleaned up and headed out to check out city. Opted to get picnic supplies and sit by water to watch sunset. A bit agog over high prices. Pretty and ornate buildings!Read more

  • Back to Slovakia

    August 12 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Up early to try out the thermal pools. Not very hot but pleasant. Ride across the Danube, back into Slovakia. Periods of path broken up by horrible roads. Continue along the very low river with some nice tailwind. Arrive at our campground, realizing we are behind a hill and thus not able to see eclipse.Read more

  • Another hot one along the Danube

    August 11 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

Spend the morning on cycle paths a bit removed from the river. Nice tail wind though it’s toasty. Stop in Goyar for pastries and lunch. Back to the river and have a nice swim break. Attempt to find camping at the kayak club outside of Komarom but no one around. End up in spendy thermal baths campground (have to pay for the thermal pools). At 93 degrees, hot water is less interestingRead more

  • Another 3 country day

    August 10 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Linger a bit longer in the luxury of our hotel room Finally head out of town and quickly enter a park. Ride within this for about 30 miles, though not a lot of tree cover on our path. Stop for lunch in a nice walled town before crossing over, unceremoniously, into Slovakia. Big city of Bratislava is all around us. 15 miles or so later we cross into Hungary. Find a store and the. Our quiet campground.Read more

  • Vienna: Day 4

    August 9 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Head off on bikes to Belvedere Palace and Gardens; a summer palace for one of the royalty. Admired the grounds and palace from the outside only. Rode, over to Schonnbrunn Palace, another summer residence but on a much grander scale. Splurged and explored inside and outside. The opulence was extreme! Toured the Orangery ( where they could grow citrus and other tropical plants year round), gardens and a maze. The grounds were huge. Back to our hotel, clean up and,eat at the film festival.Read more

  • Vienna: Day 3

  • Vienna: Day 2

    August 7 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Made it into Vienna a bit earlier than the day before. Picked up our walking trail and wandered through Stadpark, full of statues of “great men”. Only saw one woman and she was a naked nymph. Continued to Wien Museum to get our history lesson of the city. Although not as hot, did appreciate the coolness inside. Back outside, went to the market, toured around the Opera House, very spendy shopping streets, St. Peter’s church, and Jewishplatz. Of course stopped for pastries as well. Another full day of sightseeing!Read more

  • Vienna: Day 1

    August 6 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

After experiencing the Austrian healthcare system (just a check up), venture into the city. Fall upon a famous clock tower right at the noon hour. Fun show. Opt to follow a walking tour along the Ringstrasse. Many a sight to see. Surprised by the Roman influence. Beautiful parks as well. Another hot day so duck into a cafe for kuchen. Continue our walkabout before heading back to campground. (More photos to come)Read more

  • Almost to Vienna

    August 5 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 39 °C

A pretty straightforward ride to the outskirts of Vienna. It is very hot so swims to break up the ride are needed. Hills have disband the river has become wider. Arrive at campsite. Find food. Swim spot. And settle in.Read more

  • Melk & Krems

    August 4 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

Opt to ride along what appears to be the quieter right bank. Pass through nice town of Ybbs and return to a dedicated trail to Melk. River gets narrower and hills along it higher. Many castles and ruins along the tops. Stop at touristy Melk and walk amongst the boat travellers. Day is heating up and we continue along. Quieter side also has few to no resources. Lots of fruit trees though! Stop to swim and sweat the rest of the way to Melk. Try to cool down at the campground but no beach access. Walk into Krems and enjoy the town during a quiet time.Read more

  • Onto Grien and beyond

    August 3 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

After Linz the river becomes more industrial. Our route heads into the countryside for a bit. Hot by noon so take a lunch and gelato break. Carry on. Opt to go further as there is little wind. Switch to right bank which is nicely shaded. Stop at quiet gausthaus and campground right on the river.Read more

  • Beautiful section to Linz

    August 2 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Hit some hills early on but we are on a dedicated path and it’s pretty smooth sailing. “Run” into many cyclists, including those disembarking from the bike & barges. Beautiful, windy river section with soaring hills. No wonder there are so many cyclists. Strong head wind slows us down. And it’s getting hot. Make it to Linz and Kanu club. Nice swim before riding through the city in search of an open store on Sunday.Read more

  • Austria!

    August 1 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Tad bit wet when we wake. Manage to dry things out mostly and still get a good start. Rain does return so spend the morning doing the on/off jacket game. Finally sun breaks free. Make it to Passau and do our shopping (stores close early on Saturday and don’t open on Sunday). Have lunch and head out of town. Realize our “bridge” is a dam and requires steps. Oh well. We manage and enter Austria. Campground is just a bit further.Read more

  • Hot day to Deggendorf

    July 31 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Get an early start to get miles in before it gets too hot. Make good time, but then make a few stops and get caught up in long detour. Lots of construction. Stop by a church for lunch and continue on. Not a lot of shade along the river. Arrive in Deggendorf, find campground, set up and get in the river. Decide to go out to eat unaware that a big storm was coming. Very windy and stormy walk into town.Read more

  • Regensburg at 102 degrees

    July 30 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Doug spends the morning fighting with my tires which have been in place for more than a year. Head into town on bikes; exploring Herzog gardens, stone bridge, cathedral & just wandering the streets. Hear a bit of “American English” - rare up until this point. Day gets very hot! Find a laundromat (not as air-conditioned as I would have liked). Back to campground and take a dip in the river. Another trip to the grocery store for food.Read more

  • Danube Gorge to Regensburg

    July 29 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Short ride to town of W, home to a monastery and a lot of tourists. Hop on a “ferry” to take us through the Danube Gorge. Quite impressive rock formations. Carry on, encountering a hill and then an unexpected ferry. Take a plunge on the other side before carrying on to Regensberg. Find our Kanu Club along the water. Rude to get new tires and groceries.Read more

  • Bavarian towns large and small

    July 28 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A few hills to start the day. I suppose it’s good to keep hill climbing muscles intact. Very nice cycling weather - not too hot and skies are very blue. Have a pastry stop and end up continuing quite a ways to Ingolstadt for lunch. Quite a pretty town. Finish up the route in Vohburg. Free campground on the river. Have a nice swim , though river is moving fast and hard to stay in place. Out for dinner in town.Read more
