  • Stonehenge

    August 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Nice ride to Salisbury and viewed the Cathedral. Next was Old Sarum (we love our ruins). More hilly countryside to get to Stonehenge. Interesting pile of rocks. Our route to campground deviates as we find ourselves in military training zone. Watching big tanks zoom past us is a bit odd.Read more

  • Avebury

    August 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Earlyish start to catch as much sunshine as we can. Return to the military zone, and have a very muddy ride. Luckily no active shooting practice. Miss a turn but finally make it out. Nice ride to HoneyHill cafe for pastries. Learn that this area is the epicenter for wild crop circles. None appear while we ride on to Avebury, a site similar to Stonehenge. Bit of rain as we continue to campground. Manage to set up before rain.Read more

  • Avon Canal

    August 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Morning climb yields lovely valley views. Zip down to Avon Canal and ride along an amazing series of locks that enable canal boats to go downhill. Beautiful but gravely path. Decide to stay in a hostel in Bath to be able to see the city.Read more

  • Wales….almost

    August 5, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Though forecasts indicating a named storm approaching, ride towards Wales. Nice cycle paths and relatively mild conditions prompt us to go onward. Sadly, chosen campground was not a viable option. Travelodge by the bridge will have to do.Read more

  • Up and over the hills

    August 7, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Ride a bit down our lovely canal path and then veer off into a peaceful park. Route heads upward as we expected though we hadn’t anticipated the single track up and then down. Beautiful view. More of that to follow though primarily on pavement. Lovely green countryside.Read more

  • Wales

  • Amazing tides

    August 9, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Ride along coast for a bit. See swimmers and surfers in frigid sea. Learn later they are called blue tits (older lady swimmers). Nice pastries and then turn inland. Make our way to Burry point and very low tide. Second only to New Foundland. Sit at beach for a bit and then another warm showers night.Read more

  • The end of Wales

    August 14, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Stormy night. Another morning of rain and rain. Sadly wind changes direction just as we leave. Dreadful start though it is beautiful through the gloom. Skies again clear as we find ourselves in St David’s. Lunch among the cathedral. Day stays amazingly sunny and we see treated to cliffs and green pastures. Arrive in Fishguard and the end of this stage of our journey. Onto Ireland on a 1:30 am ferryRead more

  • A beach day in Ireland

    August 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Short ferry and lousy sleep. Arrive In Ireland just as sun is rising. Make coffee and watch ferries come and go. Ride/walk along a short cliff path and then find a beach. Amazingly sunny day - mostly (still below 70 though numerous swimmers). Relax! Get our ferry food and grab a good spot for our journey to France and hopefully a return to summer. The weather has been tough and very unexpected for midsummer- even in the UK. Thus we take a major detour from the plan to go up the Irish coast. We will return in early September to continue on. If it is wet then, at least that is more expected.Read more

  • Sunday ride along the railroad

    August 20, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Fabulous riding along a converted railroad. Subtle grade allowed us to go up quite a bit, barely noticing it. Pastries at the top! Divert to see a lovely waterfall. Arrive relatively early at our campground in St-hillarie. Unfortunately had missed all the stores so go in search of food. Meh pizza as the only option.Read more
