  • Wilpena Pound

    8 de mayo, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Chilly morning (45) thus sleep in. Sun quickly warms us. Head along main trail towards Wilpena Pound (enclosed valley). Continue up to lookout and then opt for another hike up Mount Ohlssen Bagge. Quite the scramble but great views. On the way down spot a yellow footed wallaby! Find ourselves surrounded in the campground by a school group. At least they go to bed early.Leer más

  • Hike up Mount Remarkable

    6 de mayo, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Drive to the other side of the mountain range to get to trail head for Mountain Remarkable hike. Nice quiet hike, winding our way up and over the mountain. Quite a bit of scree along the way. Thankfully, flies don’t seem to like this hike. Back down and return to our campsite. Make friends with a wild cat - steak fat always good for making friends.Leer más

  • Onto Mount Remarkable NP

    5 de mayo, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Chilly morning but the sun quickly warms things up. Pack up car more efficiently and continue northward. Buy more food and after driving through arid prairie, arrive in lovely Mount Remarkable NP - also arid but more interesting topography. Go for hike along dry riverbed. Break out bug hats for the first time. Spot mountain goats, deer, wallabies and lots of flies.Leer más

  • Adelaide: Neighborhoods & errands

    1 de mayo, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Get a late start so opt to wander a bit and take care of our errands. Walk by large Oval (stadium) to North Adelaide - one of the oldest and prettiest neighborhoods. Lovely oak lined streets and stone buildings. Back through garden to wine museum and get a lot of our shopping done on busy Rundle street. Stop for a pint and back to hostel for delivered pizza. Very good!Leer más

  • Adelaide: Museums & Gardens

    30 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Returned to the Central Market to get food for the day. After, set off into the coolish morning heading for the South Australia Museum. A few interesting stops along the way. Good museum with an extensive exhibit of Aboriginal history and artifacts. Nice pastry break before walking along the river toward ghe botanical gardens. Nice exhibit of Chihuly art. Back to hostel for fish dinner.Leer más

  • Onto Adelaide

    29 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Beautiful morning for a bike ride along the coast. Lovely bike path right by the ocean. Dark clouds building around us. They do eventually open up on us. Follow a series of city cycle ways leading us into the city. Find our hostel, unpack and do some exploring. Go out for very good Greek dinner.Leer más

  • Vineyard trail to Moana

    28 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Start our day with a pancake breakfast - out. Pretty good but spendy and small. Start our ride along the coast and quickly head up a steep hill. Nice views but tough climb. Pass a rather large Chinese temple. Decide to take scenic route on the Coast to Vines rail trail. Surrounded by vineyards. Do stop at a winery for some tasting but have to race to campground in Moana before dark.Leer más

  • Normanville

    27 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Pack up and head up and through the Inman Valley. Finally have more trees! Lots of grazing animals and a few kangaroos. Stop for a pastry and opt to go to Normanville and the beach. Set up before taking a nice long walk down the beach. Apparently, there had been a great white shark spotted recently along this beach. We only see a few dead fish. Big camp kitchen is full of teens on a school kayak trip.Leer más

  • Exploring The Bluff

    26 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

As we have lots of time to get to Adelaide, spend another day around Victor Harbor. Beautiful sunshine gives way to some clouds and drizzle but we continue down cycle path the the end - the bluff. Spot dolphins frolicking in the water before hiking up to the top. Find an echidna and a little burrowing scrub like animal. Walk along the beautiful coastline. Day turns cold and windy so spend most of the remainder inside the warm TV room.Leer más

  • Victor Harbor

    25 de abril, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Opt to move to Victor Harbor as it seems better placed for exploring. Ride along the Encounter Cycleway - with the ocean on one side and lovely homes on the other. Arrive in VH and check in. Walk back to town - bustling as it’s a public holiday (Anzac Day). Walk along causeway to Granite Island.Leer más

  • Goolwa

    24 de abril, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A longer bit more interesting day of riding. Much of the morning was flat nothing but we entered a wine region and then returned to the coast. The day was quite warm - a pleasant change. Stopped for lunch by the lake. Battled a bit of wind and some short but steep hills as we rolled through more grapes to Goolwa. Found a spot in a busy campground. Out for Thai dinner.Leer más

  • Wellington

    23 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Short day planned. Fart around a bit before getting on the road. Very clear and sunny day with minimal wind. Leave Lake Alexandria behind and surrounded by lots of nothingness. The vastness and emptiness is at times mind numbing. Ride on. Make it to almost nonexistent town of Wellington and take ferry across the Murray river. Set up in caravan park and sit around for awhile. Short little walk along the river. Make dinner in a tiny box/kitchen.Leer más

  • Meninge

    22 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Beautiful morning and the Roos are out to greet us. Take a short walk over the dunes to the beach. Sooooo long and deserted. Make our way back to the main road and with another tailwind continue our northward journey. Road goes along the water for awhile, breaking up the monotony of coastal flats. Short lunch break and finish our 90 kms at Meninge. Check into campground, get food, take showers and make dinner.Leer más

  • Fly along Coorong Peninsula

    21 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Still windy but they are going our way. Big day ahead of us so hit the road early. Zoom along to Kingston (through vineyards) and pick up a bit of food and water. Uncertain whether we will have access to any water for a few days (no services for 144 km). Pass the giant lobster and travel along coast (though can’t see it as separated by a bit of land and dunes). 110 kms and we reach our turn off. Short, but nasty stretch to 42 mile campground. Find a nice secluded spot, set up and make dinner.Leer más

  • Stormy in Robe

    20 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Rain and wind continued all night long - as predicted. No desire to ride in it. After a bit rain stops and we head off on a walk about. Don’t get very far as it begins to rain again. Duck into a cafe for a bit before getting ice cream (it was good enough to want it even in nasty weather) and then going to the movies. Pick up food and return to packed kitchen/sitting area. Find a bit of space and somehow manage to make and eat dinner.Leer más

  • Battling the wind

    19 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Depart early from Beachport, heading directly into a strong wind. Though it’s very flat, we crawl along. Spy a few interesting animals along the coastal flatlands. Finally arrive in Robe and opt to stop. Check in to caravan park and then head into town. Have terrific ice cream for lunch and then walk along coastline. Check out the local brewery which is hopping. Fish n’chips ends our day.Leer más

  • Beachport

    18 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Relatively early start after a big breakfast. Day is sunny but windier than we expected. Roll along small hills as we leave Mountain Gambier and ride through many miles of sheep and cows. Do stop at a small sinkhole/cave. As it is Good Friday, a public holiday, most things are closed and trucks are thankfully off the road. Stop in Millicent for coffee and continue riding until we return to the ocean at Beachport. Campgrounds are packed but we are able to secure a spot. Check out ocean and very long jetty. See our first wombat - in the campground!Leer más

  • Mount Gambier

    17 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

A rainbow and very brief rain showers starts our day. Pack up anyway and ride down forest road full of wallabies and kangaroos. Once we emerge from the park, spot our first emus. They are very quick so hard to get a photo before they go hide in the bush. Cross over into South Australia, taking a very quiet road to Mount Gambier. Get food and meet up with our warmshowers host, Theo, who tours us around the crater lakes and town. Back for nice dinner and conversation.Leer más

  • Glenelg National Park

    17 de abril, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Depart from Portland, taking what we thought would be a quieter road. Unfortunately, if was a logging route and main thoroughfare for trucks in general. Do spot almost 10 koalas along the road, swinging in their trees. Finally pull off big road and head down a rough track into Glenelg park. Fortunately the road improves and we cruise into our campsite. Take a quick dip in the chilly river. Wait a bit too long to start dinner and have to fend off the possums. They eventually knock our Brussel Sprouts over but we protect our lasagna. Nice fire helps to keep them at bay.Leer más

  • Portland?!

    15 de abril, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Sunny and relatively calm day. Head off on very busy Princes Highway. Though we have ridden a lot of it since Sydney, it seems particularly busy with trucks. Do spot quite a number of koalas on our way. Early arrival, check in and wander into Portland - a relatively busy port town. Back for a very nice lasagna dinner.Leer más

  • Griffiths Island & Port Fairy

    14 de abril, Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Rest day. Head into town for very nice breakfast. Sun is out but wind is cool. Put more clothes on and wander over to the beach and Griffiths Island. Walk around it, spying many underground bird nests and a few wallabies. Apparently the shearwaters (mutton birds) come back here every spring to mate and then fly to Alaska for their summer. Hang out for the rest of the day at the beach, hunkered behind rocks to stay out of the wind.Leer más
