A long day to Rotorua

Did not manage to get an early start and a few stops before leaving town caused delays. Did travel on another nice cycleway out of town - though it did get detoured. After advice from an Italian cyclist, opt for quieter (longer) road to Rotorua. Good choice though very. Interesting landscape as we head up into the hills. Finally get to Okere falls. Doug has a flat. Push on alone to campground while he fixes it. Exhausted!Les mer

Get an early start to try and get off busy 2 before too much traffic. Generally a solid plan. Turn off and hit cycle path through estuaries, kiwi and avo farms and quiet neighborhoods leading into Tauranga. Check in to campground early, do some bike cleaning (lots of tar and embedded rocks) and then take the bus to the city for pizza dinner.Les mer

Soggy night but lovely morning. Head out of town on Hauraki cycle trail heading for the Karangahake Gorge. Very nice converted rail trail. Lots of people out and about. Very busy road down to Waihi Beach. Very crowded. As stopped by the side of the road, a bike shop guy helped us in finding us a place to stay. Very crowded but pleasant Bowertown beach campground. After a stormy night, the skies cleared and dried us out before departing. A few hills before cruising down to coastline. Lovely rising. Duck into a bird reserve just as clouds open up. Continue onward and turn inland. Lots of traffic - summer vacation had begun. A few more big bursts of rain before arriving in Paeora. Manage to stay dry amongst a lot of rain.Les mer

A Christmas at the beach

An interesting commingling of cultures for Christmas here in NZ. Our Māori neighbors, dressed is Xmas pjs played morning lawn games, the Asian community has a service and a luncheon and many folks like us hit the beach. Nice little walk and afternoon chill. Made a nice lamb dinner.Les mer

Lovely cycle path out of our campground and heading south. We are loaded up with few meals as Christmas means closed stores. Stop at beach and go for first ‘swim’ in NZ. Very shallow and cloudy. Head into hills and arrive at Orere point campground.Les mer

A bus, a ferry and a wee bike ride

Make our departure from our WS stay, and head to catch our bus in Kerikeri. Stop first to see a few historic sites. After a little bit of a kerfuffle (likely my fault) load our bikes and gear on the bus and head to Auckland. Arrive a mere 5 hours later and hop on a ferry to Beachlands - making a hassle free escape from Auckland. Set up camp at Omana cliff top campground.Les mer

Beautiful morning light over much calmer bay. Relatively short day to get to Kerikeri and our warm showers stay. Nice flatish section before stopping for lunch before big hill. Pretty poor shoulder as we make our way up and cruise back down to the coast. Stop at Rainbow falls before heading to Bruce and Barb’s lovely home. Very nice evening.Les mer

Early morning rain showers delays our departure. But manage to dry out and head out into the sunshine. A lovely flatish section with a generally favorable wind keeps us moving right along. After chatting with a local, backtrack to visit a lovely Kauri gallery. Fuel up with pastries and continue along the northern coast. Windy lunch stop by the bay and make final push to Hihi beach. Generally spared from the mozzies in the kitchen. With the wind at our back, head south and roll along amongst the farm animals. So many sheep! Short day and stop at Puken, first stopping for NZ fruit ice cream (a mix of vanilla ice cream amd frozen fruit turned into soft serve). Manage to set up the tent just as a cloud opens up on us. Quick lasting and we head off to check out the nearby reserve. Splurge for a seafood dinner out. Great view - lousy service.Les mer

Swarmed by mosquitoes during the night and into the morning. Make our escape to the kitchen. Spend the morning cleaning sand and salt off the bikes. Ride the remaining 12 miles (hilly ones) to Cape Reinga. Very rugged and isolated. Apparently the cape is where the spirits go to exit this world. Return to our empty campground and opt to sleep in the kitchen.Les mer

Early morning to catch the low tides. Hit the beach and begin our journey along the 90 mile beach. Very favorable wind as we cruise northward. As the tide rises look for a spot to wait. Incredibly beautiful and windy. As ride recedes, resume our journey to Te Paki stream where we slog up the creek bed to the dunes and road. Find our way to empty campground.Les mer

Nice down hill to catch ferry across the bay. Sunny day on a nice quiet road. Hills don’t seem too bad especially with a nice tail wind. Cross over the ‘mountains’ and cruise down the other side to Ahipara and the Tasman Sea. Check out the 90 mile beach.Les mer

Turn our backs to the Pacific and begin our journey across the island. Seek out our first ‘Great Ride of NZ’. First check out the famous toilets in Kawakawa - done by Hundertwasswer. Find the trail head and make it about 5 minutes before hitting our first barrier. And then the next and a rancher tells us they continue. Hit the road instead. Quite quiet. Vacillate as to which way to go. Opt to go another 40k after already going 50k to get to Rawene. Arrive exhausted but find lovely holiday park.Les mer

Take a quick tour of
the highlights of Whangerei before making our departure. Opt for a more direct route to the coast. After a bit on the less busy roadway, turn off onto a quiet rural road. Lots of animals including these friends from South America. A few long climbs and we hit the coast. Stop for lunch in lovely Helena Bay. Continue along to Oakura Bay. First ice cream of the top before tackling last hill to campground.Les mer

Very unsettled night as the neighbor youths partied all night long. Threats of rain keep us moving and we cover the distance to Warkward quickly. Get useful advice at the tourist info and opt to take the coastal route. All is fine until the last very long hill and then gravel descent. Make it in one piece to Pikuri holiday park. Few others around though a number of through hikers join our empty field.Les mer

Wake up to a windy and warming day. Fuel up with coffee and begin to unpack. Are one pannier short - hopefully it was empty. Head off towards the coast to coast walkabout. Enjoy great views from the top of Mt Eden and venture through a lovely park and gardens before hitting the water. 13 miles in total but a great day of wandering.Les mer
