The Grand Adventure

A bike trip with no end Les mer
  • Exploring Dingle

    17. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Opt to stay at our campground another night and explore Dingle more easily. Beautiful green hillsides. Mountains are bigger and seem to take up more of the peninsula. Dingle is a busy tourist town on a pretty bay. Go a bit further onto the peninsula. Take the bike route back and find ourselves in a cow traffic jam. Just don’t think about the “mud” we are riding through.Les mer

  • Amongst the sheep

    18. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Mostly sunny morning. Get a nice early start but then delayed by a flat tire. Having avoided the treacherous Connor Pass find ourselves climbing on a quiet road which deteriorates into an overgrown farm road which becomes a sheep field. Amazing views and plenty of sheep shit. But lovely. Cruise o down. Sit and eat scones while awaiting a passing shower. Find a kitten on the road and after pondering whether I should take it - the owner comes and claims her. Happy ending. Continue into the wind. No good camping spots so end in a warm hotel.Les mer

  • Onto Clare County

    19. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Winds continue to howl but we were warm in our hotel. Start the day with a traditional Irish breakfast - not my favorite. Have a great tailwind to the ferry at talbert to take us across the bay. Ride in and out of the wind through very quiet farm lands. Find ourselves in a deserted caravan park. Able to tuck in between mobile homes and stay dry in their brand new kitchen.Les mer

  • Kilkee Cliffs

    20. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

We survived the night and awake to sun. And it changes but still much better than it has been. Face the wind for a bit and after a quick visit to a castle, head north with the wind. Travel along Loop Head peninsula and come upon Kilkee Cliffs. Amazing!! Rest of the ride is through countryside with rainbows around every turn. Stay at another deserted campground. Pub dinner as too cold to stay outsideLes mer

  • Cliffs of Moher

    21. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Short day planned. Late start as we warm up in the sunshine and fight off aggressive farm animals. Short delay to deal with flat tire and then up to Cliffs of Moher. Many tourists but somehow manage to get in for free. Cruise down to Doolin and nice lovely campground.Les mer

  • The Buren

    22. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Sunny morning in Doolin as we set off and head east and inland. Finally in time for a festival - a matchmaking festival! Pass that by and ride through a totally different landscape - the buren. Nice last day of cycling. Check into room, reorganize and have nice lamb dinnerLes mer

  • Onto Dublin

    23. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Very chilly morning. Packed up and went a few blocks to train station. Three trains later, we make our way to the warm shower host to store our bikes. Get a ride to bus stop and check into hostel. Lots of people. Meet up with Mertzs’ at the swan bar. Pizza, beer and rugby.Les mer

  • A mountain top attempt

    26. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

With our hiking route planned, we head off into the cloudy day with hopes of climbing a popular summit in the Wicklow park. Easy trail to start yet it eventually comes to a waterfall. Quite the scramble up amongst the sheep and boggy terrain. Wind and storm clouds emerge. Call it and head back down after a quick lunch. One of our smarter moves. Nice day anyway!Les mer

  • Up the Spinc

    28. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Better weather has us out the door early for another hike. Though it is right next to where we had been earlier it is on the other side of the hills. Well marked trail up and over Spinc - a ridge on the top of the mountain. Many more people, including gaggles of school kids. Though the sun never popped out it was beautiful.Les mer

  • Belfast

    29. september 2023, Nord-Irland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Sunny drive north toward Belfast. With no fanfare, enter Northern Ireland. Hit some highlights of the city including the St. George”s marketplace and Botanical gardens. Real mix of newer buildings and much older. Continue on, along the coast to our second home in Carnlough. Catch the full moon.Les mer

  • Onto Kilkenny

    5. oktober 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

A rainy morning this we dawdled around in our dry kitchen. Finally head out into the drizzle and relatively calm day. Fortunately veer off the busy road we have been on and enjoy the quiet countryside. Arrive in the medieval town of Kilkenny. Nice campground complete with a resident whom we quickly befriend.Les mer

  • Kilkenny

    6. oktober 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

With lots of time and few miles to our ferry opt for a day to explore Kilkenny and celebrate our anniversary. Drop my bike off for a tune up and head to the castle. Many churches and cathedrals within small town. Nice dinner back at our campsite - providing the kitten with her own kibbles.Les mer

  • Back to the sea

    7. oktober 2023, Irland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

A sad goodbye to our friend. Wish we could take her as she seems to have no owner and is pregnant. Very warm day - even back in shorts. Ride through farmlands - complete with usual sights and smells. Even a lengthy cow crossing. Arrive at our campground on the inlet. Another very nice kitchen set up.Les mer
