  • Peachland & Summerland

    August 23, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

After a nice breakfast, set off on a short day to Summerland. The shorter and scenic route turned out the be quite challenging as we pushed up steep hiking trails. Rewarded ourselves in Peachland with scones. Southward we went - watching dark clouds gather and lightering strikes. Made it to campground with little to no rain.Read more

  • Kalamalka Lake

    August 22, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Quickly caught the Okanagan Rail trail - a lovely packed gravel route that hugged the coastline on the lake. Path did eventually peter out to nasty single track but then re-emerged as a paved path all the way to Kelowna. Checked out the beach before climbing
UP. Stopped at Little Straw Winery and then went a few blocks to our WarmShowers hosts - Julian & Jill. Had a lovely evening with them!

  • Goodbye Yellowhead Hwy

    August 20, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

After traveling on the Yellowhead Hwy since landing on the BC mainland a month ago, we say goodbye and head out of Kamloops on a beautiful and quiet road. Hoodoos and mountain goats keep us amused. Cross the river and up we go into the hills. A steep climb gives way to a rolling plateau. Arrive at Monte Lake, a small lake amongst a very burnt area.Read more

  • Kamloops.

    August 19, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Short ride to Kamloops. Very noisy with train traffic as well as four lanes of traffic. Find our campsite right on the river, across the bridge from the city center. Do some errands and check out 2 breweries and a very good ice cream place.Read more

  • Into the dry hills

    August 18, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Ride along busy Hwy 5 along N Thompson river. See burnt hillsides all along our way. Stop in Barriere for lunch and ice cream. Sunny skies very quickly cloud over and we race to beat it. And lose. Thunderstorms all around us. Arrive at the campground quite wet. Fortunately there are nice covered areas.Read more

  • More falls

    August 17, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Rain does finally stop in the early morning. Pack up and get a ride further into the park. Short walk to H. Falls and then Dawn falls with an extra one in between. Ride back out of the park and go a very short distance to North Thompson PP. Nice and chilly river. Play a
    round of Bocce.

  • Rainy Day

    August 16, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Wake up to unexpected rain. Had fortunately covered most things but not everything. Manage to get a break in the rain to make coffee before the rain starts again. Fortunately are offered refuge in one of the buildings that has a kitchen and sitting area. Spend the rest
of the rainy day there. It does allow us to watch Maddie’s White Coat ceremony.

  • Onward to Wells Gray

    August 15, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Opt to take some time to explore Wells Gray PP. Gather up provisions and set off on short 10k ride to campground … UP. Stop at Spahats waterfall and then up again on gravel road to campground. Large and empty campground that used to be a government facility. Set up and do a little walk into the quiet hills.Read more

  • Onward to Clearwater

    August 14, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Another smoky day. Get an early start as we hope to go 100k. Wind and terrain cooperate and breeze along at a good pace. Leave the big mountains behind us as we ride along the river and into farmland. Arrive in town and hit the DQ. Check into nearby campground nestled within pine forestRead more

  • Smoke and wind

    August 13, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Hard to tell if it’s smoky or cloudy or just a bit of both. Southerly winds are bringing the smoke from the wildfires. Struggle to see the mountains and glaciers surrounding us. Continue onward to Blue River - a deserted resort town that seems entirely focused on hell-skiing. Walk to nice lake and manage to get in before clouds completely return. Nice kitchen set up in campground.Read more

  • Mount Robson Pt 2

    August 11, 2024 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

An earlier start up to the park. Stop at Rearguard falls - the furthest the salmon get in their return trip. None to be seen but pretty spectacular falls. Continue up and head out on Berg trail to Kinney lake. Again storm clouds roll in. Another ice cream and another unsuccessful attempt to beat the rain. Dry again at site but clouds never really clear.Read more

  • Mount Robson Pt 1

    August 10, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Decide to stay at our campsite and ride the 10 miles up to the park (so many amenities- Adirondack chairs, bath mats…). Beautiful ride up with the peaks appearing around each corner. Decide to go on a shorter hike to Overlander falls. Get ice cream by the visitor center and watch skies darken. Book on down, getting caught in a bit of rain. Back at our site it is sunny.Read more

  • Tete Jeanue

    August 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Did a grocery run before heading out so we would have enough food while we hung out by Mt. Robson. Finding food is proving to be a bit challenging. Pretty straight shot to the intersection with Hwy 5 which we will take when we head south. The sky is lookjbg quite ominous, especially in the direction we are headed. After much deliberation, opt to stay at a lively campground by the river. Skies clear.Read more

  • McBride

    August 8, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Managed to not get eaten by bears or kicked out of the rest area. Did pack up early and hit the road before 9. A long and hilly day awaited us to make it to our first town (and grocery store) since Prince George. Gradients weren’t too bad as we rolled towards the Rockies. Had lunch by one of the many rivers that crossed our path. A last long downhill and we were in McBride. Shared a pint of ice and then found our campground.Read more

  • Finding rest at the rest area

    August 7, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left the lovely lakeside campsite (with pit toilets that were actually flush) and continued eastward into the mountains. No services or houses, just trees, creeks and mountains. Stopped at an
Ancient Forest - huge trees including one called Treebeard. Another few miles and we were at an elaborate rest area - decided to stealth camp.Read more

  • Lake Purden

    August 6, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Left our comfy hotel and headed out through Prince George. It still seems fun down even though it is busier than yesterday. Cross the wide Fraser river and back up on to the plateau. Ride a nice quiet side road for a bit and then back to Hwy 16. While we are headed towards Jasper and the fires we will turn south before it. The road is eerily quiet as it is still closed up ahead and thus less traffic in either direction. Stop for the night at Purden Lake PP and enjoy the quiet.Read more

  • Prince George

    August 5, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Lazy morning watching Olympics. Venture out into town but it’s very closed up - due to holiday. Walk alongside the river and cottonwood trees. Not much else to do - return to hotel making dinner in the handy kitchen.Read more

  • A bit of comfort

    August 4, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left our basic campground and continued along the high highway that was a bit busier. Got a brief glance of the Clukuculz Lake and then a brief lunch spot by a river. A final hill and we are in Prince George. Find our hotel, get clean and out for another stop on our beer trail.Read more

  • Nothing is perfect

    August 3, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Very blue sky as we head out of town. Roads are relatively quiet - perhaps logging trucks have the weekend off. Road improves a bit as well and make good time to Vanderhoof. We Stop for lunch and on the way out discover I have a flat tire. First in 13 months. And it was a 2.5 inch nail that did it. Relatively quick change and we are off. Find our way to Brookside ‘resort’. Not much there but we are offered free camping. Take it!Read more

  • Fraser Lake

    August 2, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Continuing through the Lake District, pass through small town of Topley. Continue along the Buckley river. Although we pass through ‘wildlife corridors’ - no wildlife to be seen. Snow covered peaks are behind us now and green forests prevail. Warmth has definitely returned and arrive in the town of Fraser Lake quite toasty. Opt to stay at municipal site by the lake as opposed to pressing on to the provincial park. Nice lake side view. Another quick dip in the quite chilly water.Read more

  • Burns lake

    August 1, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

As promised, the sun is shining and summer has returned. A nice ride with one big hill (don’t quite know what the 6 mile name refers to). Road fairly busy with logging trucks and RVs. Arrive at free municipal campsite in Burns Lake. Mange to get mostly in before doing laundry and getting groceries.Read more

  • Houston

    July 31, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Early morning rain makes for a very delayed start. Eventually sun peaks through and we are able to dry out the tent. Ride along the Buckley river heading south. Even have a bike path for a bit. Clouds occasionally open up on us. Fortunately find a little rec site for lunch before going up the big climb of the day - ‘hungry hill’. Get hit with a headwind on the way down but make it to Houston. Get food and head to Shady Rest RV.Read more

  • Trail to town

    July 30, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Day off bikes to explore around Smithers. Thick cloud cover but no rain in the forecast. Hike up Joe’s trail - a wide trail that went to the base of the skyline chairlift. Nice wildflowers and huckleberries along the way. Back in town try Smithers Brewery. Pick wild raspberries with our campground and have a mostly foraged crisp for dessert.Read more
