  • Day 51: more Santiago

    3. august, Sargasso Sea ⋅ 🌧 79 °F

We got up early to take a bus back to Santiago. I felt VERY lucky to have gotten tickets the day before - the bus was absolutely full! It was gratifying to feel the bus working hard on the hills, ha. It still only took two hours to cover the distance it took us four days to walk! We spent the day sightseeing and enjoying Santiago one last day. We also went back to the cathedral to hug the statue of St. James, an ancient pilgrim tradition we didn’t get to previously.Læs mere

  • Days 52-53: Madrid

    4. august, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

We were up early again in order to catch the very stinky train to Madrid. (Smelly but fast! These high speed trains are kind of amazing.) Once there we had choices on how to get to our hotel so … we walked! A heat wave arrived since we finished the Camino (what luck!!) but even so it was early enough in the day to be a bearable five mile walk. We enjoyed seeing more of Madrid than we would have on a bus.

Once we’d checked in we had a snack and then spent five (!) hours in the Museo del Prado. It is a tremendous art collection! Lots of El Greco, Rubens, Titian. Only one Picasso. Can’t share any highlights as photos aren’t allowed. We had a great Italian dinner and then walked around a little before bed.

Since our flight wasn’t until 1:00 the next day, we got up early enough to walk around. The late 19th century architecture in that part of town is spectacular! We agreed that we need to return to see more of this beautiful city. A lovely coda to this amazing trip.
