  • That blows

    July 5, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Interesting travel day as we left Germany today. With Amsterdam getting hit with their strongest ever recorded storm, transit was shut down quickly and we were left to scramble. We decided to get at as far as we could on the train, which was Utrecht, Netherlands. Rather than rush to the next mode of transportation, we chose food and beer instead!

After enjoying a wonderful Asian fusion dinner and a couple of beers, we grabbed an Uber for the last 50 miles and are resting comfortably in our hotel!

Looking forward to enjoying a full day of “touristing” tomorrow!

  • Amsterdam

We had a great time exploring in Amsterdam today. Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and lots of people watching. So many bicycles!! Yet another place where we could’ve spent many days seeing all there is to see; we’ll have to come back. Another excellent Italian dinner and a drink with one of Neal’s drum corps buddies wrapped up the day nicely.

    2. The Royal Palace
    3. Ad/artwork in random street
    4. Magna Plaza, which is a shopping mall now!
    5. Another canal
    6. From a really moving temporary display at the Van Gogh Museum that shows paintings from his last couple of months. This one is called Twilight.
7., 8., and 9 From the Rijksmuseum. One of those museums you really need a few days to see. We did our best.

  • Mind the Gap! London

    July 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Dan and Samantha showed us an excellent time today in London. We started with the Portobello Road and Notting Hill markets, then went on to the British Library and saw a display of little things like the Magna Carta, a draft of a Monty Python script, a Mozart quartet manuscript, and lyrics for “Michelle” in Paul’s writing on the back of an envelope. We got rained on, rode in a black cab, and visited more than one pub, which all felt very British! We viewed some of the big sightseeing highlights and will do more of that tomorrow. We ended the day with fantastic fish and chips and some pints in their local pub. Jolly good day!
    1. So much history everywhere here! Lots of these little plaques referencing residents like Orwell, Kipling, etc.
2, 3., 4. Some of the many pubs we saw today.
    5. St. Pancras station. We arrived in London to this station yesterday but didn’t see the impressive front of the building.
    6. St. Martin in the Fields
    7. Big Ben, of course. We managed to hear it ring a couple of times.
    8. Richard the Lionhearted in front of Parliament
    9. Westminster Abbey
    10. Signage at the Dodo Micropub, Dan and Samantha’s local

  • London - last day!

    July 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Our last day of adventure was, indeed, excellent. We started early with a big traditional (mostly - mine was a vegetarian version) English breakfast at a diner, and then Dan and Samantha skillfully led us through train and tube connections to get us to the Tate Britain Museum. I actually wasn’t familiar with this museum before, but we enjoyed seeing some of this specifically British collection, which includes a huge number of Turner paintings. Then we took a boat down the Thames with our personal tour guides; fortunately this worked out better for us than for the people on all of those Turner ships! We alit at the Tower Bridge and then walked around the perimeter of the London Tower. Very interesting! We need to make time for a tour on our next visit. After a coffee, we took a double-decker bus to the very Brooklyn-esque neighborhood (neighbourhood, I suppose) of Dalston for an amazing lunch that Neal and I would NEVER have found on our own. Dalston is one of those areas that’s in the process being gentrified. We walked down a tiny side street to an area behind what were once warehouses; this area now houses a brewery, a bakery, and a restaurant called Acme Fire Cult with a tiny outdoor kitchen that creates delicious, seasonal dishes to share. We took the bus to gawk at St. Paul’s Cathedral; pictures can’t show how massive this church is! Another place to tour next time. After that we took various buses, trains, and the tube back to Dan and Samantha’s place in West London, where we went to their other favorite local pub and then watched parts of Glastonbury festival while enjoying wine and cheese. What a perfect way to end this epic trip.

    1. Inside the “Tate Brit”
    2. Tower Bridge selfie!
    3. Tower of London
    4. No idea what’s going on here. Fascinating people-watching in London!
    5. Random building with pig
    6. Menu from Acme Fire Cult
    7. Memorial for the Fire of London
    8. Queen Anne in front of St. Paul’s (photo credit Neal)
    9. The path we took to the pub. Very restful after the bustle of central London
    10. The Fox - the final pub of the trip

  • Pit stop!

    July 10, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

3 hour layover in Copenhagen means Mikkeller and Lakrids! This required going through passport control, but it is worth it!
Mikeller is a little beer stop in the terminal and the Lakrids store, which happens to make my favorite licorice, is right next to it. Denmark for the win!Read more
