Ightham Mote Gardens

The gardens are beautiful; at this time of the year we've been seeing lots of dahlias. There are many water features, such as lakes, ponds, a creek, waterfall, fountains, and of course, the moat! Families love to come to the National Trust properties to spend the day.Read more

Medieval Moated Manor

This 14th century house was owned by many people over the years: knights, courtiers to Henry VIII, sheriffs, high-society Victorians, members of Parliament, and more. So it is kind of a blog of its history, as it has been added onto and remodeled many times. The last owner was an American businessman, who donated it to the National Trust in 1985.

The house not only has a moat, but also a courtyard.Read more

The choir stalls came from Eton College when they remodeled. The carvings are so beautiful!

Here is a side chapel and also a smaller one, for individual prayer.

A very inspiring place, which probably gives many a student a good foundation of faith to guide their life.Read more

This is the largest college chapel in the world! All we could say was, "Wow"! It's more like a cathedral. The apse is 90 ft from the floor. And the rose window, completed in 1977, is the largest in England at 32 ft. in diameter.Read more

The statue of Our Lady greets us just inside the new entrance built in the 1970s. The painted ceilings are beautiful!

Lancing College Chapel

The chapel is a huge building of sandstone in Gothic style. It is not only used for church, but also as an assembly hall and auditorium. We heard this college has a great music program. It would be wonderful to hear music in the chapel!

The crypt was built first, of course. It was used as the chapel from 1875 until the upper level was completed in 1911. It is now used for choir practice, and some of the rooms in the crypt are used as classrooms. With its high ceilings, it doesn't feel like what I've always experienced as a crypt!

There is also a memorial to the former students who died in WWI.Read more

"Higher Learning" at Lancing College

While driving by on the way to Brighton, we saw this college up on a hill overlooking the South Downs and the sea. It looked so pretty we decided to go there today. It is a Catholic day and boarding school for 13 to 18 year-olds, geared to the "forgotten" middle class. The campus is beautiful and all the buildings are made of flint.Read more

The lower level shows how the servants lived and worked. We found out the definition of Still Room--a separate kitchen area (distillery) where cordials, spirits, perfumes, and preserves were made, tea was brewed and breakfast and tea trays laid.Read more

Views and Gardens at Uppark House

The gardens are being restored to their 1800s designs.
You are seeing so many beautiful places and learning so much! This time of year must be especially beautiful. We are attending Harlan J’s funeral on Monday. 😢

Uppark House and Garden

Uppark is an 18th century Georgian mansion in the South Downs (the hilly area south of London). In 1989 a fire destroyed a large part of the mansion, but luckily, it happened during the daytime, so staff and tourists had a chance to rescue much of the furniture, wall hangings, art, and mirrors. It took 5 years to restore the house and reopen it. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed of the interior, so I used these from the National Trust website. The restoration work is amazing!

A beautiful Doll House has been at Uppark since 1746. Since it is 300 years old and in such good condition, it is obvious that it was not played with, but was Lady Featherstonhaugh's hobby. It is furnished with fine furniture with real marble tops, imported silks, porcelain, oil paintings, and real candles!Read more

Worthing has a pier like Brighton, but instead of an amusement park, it has the Southern Pavilion, which is an Art Deco cafe in the daytime, and a venue for music and other events at night. All along the pier are glass panels to display art done by children and other townfolk.Read more

Worthing: Another Seaside Resort

Worthing and Brighton were fishing villages before they became resorts. Then bathing in seawater began to be recommended as a cure for illnesses. Men and women used separate areas of the beaches. Bathing Machines were used in the 18th and 19th centuries; these were wheeled carts with sides and a roof, in which the bather would change into a bathing suit and then be wheeled into the water. They bathed with the cart protecting them from view of the shore.

Worthing has a Beach House with a bowling green, tennis courts, mini golf, and playground for families, There is a pleasant promenade next to the beach. It was a very clean area, and quite enjoyable.Read more

Brighton: By the Beautiful Sea

Brighton is a seaside resort on the southern coast of England, only 10 miles from where we are house-sitting. In the Georgian era, the Prince Regent, later crowned King George IV, spent a lot of time in Brighton, and built the Royal Pavilion where he would host parties. We toured the Royal Pavilion and it was amazing! The inside is decorated with Chinese-inspired wallpaper, furniture, and statuary. The dining room has a huge chandelier held to the ceiling by a carved and gilded dragon, and there are dragon motifs everywhere. We were disappointed that photography was not allowed inside!

Brighton Pier was added in the Victorian era, and has been copied in many seaside resorts around the world. Day trippers started coming from London when transportation improved. It is only about an hour's train ride.

We took the bus East of town to see the coastline and the chalk cliffs.Read more

Sir Winston handled all the gardening except the rose gardens. That was Lady Clementine's domain. She especially loved pink roses. Then for their 50th anniversary, their children gave them a collection of various Golden Roses.

Churchill loved to sit and feed his golden orfe fish in the pond.Read more

Chartwell: Churchill's Home

Chartwell was the much-loved Churchill family home from 1922. It is a peaceful country home in Kent, with beautiful hillside views. Churchill loved gardening, and created ponds and lakes on the property. Here are some of the views from the house.

We were surprised to learn that he was also an avid amateur painter! He began to paint at age 40, and it was a source of relaxation and joy. He painted over 530 canvasses, and many are on display in his studio and in the house.Read more

Elizabeth Ilive, Countess and Scientist

Elizabeth was the mistress and later the wife of the 3rd Earl of Egremont. She was a devoted mother, and also had a laboratory where she could study and experiment. She invented the cross-bar lever to make it easier to move heavy rocks, and won an award for this. She also did agricultural experiments and found better ways to grow potatoes. Elizabeth wrote for scientific publications, but due to the times, she didn't get all the credit she deserved.Read more

The Grand Staircase, and Medieval Chapel

The Grand Staircase (first three pictures) contains murals painted by Louis Laguerre in 1715-20. They tell the story of Prometheus and Pandora, featuring some of the family members in heroic roles.

The chapel (last three pictures) is the only remaining medieval section of the house.Read more

This house contains the finest art collection in the National Trust, including paintings by Van Dyck, Turner, and Gainsborough. We wish we knew more about art! Many of the rooms were not used often, but were mainly used for displays. For example, the dining table wasn't set up until they planned a dinner party.Read more
