    Falls

    21 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

One of several falls that we saw along the way. Due to the vast amount of rain that we have been getting as of late, there is actually water in the falls, plus everything is a bit more green that it had been even just a couple of days ago.

For our ride up, we managed to not have any rain at all.

The ride is smooth with the diesel electric engine and they give you all sorts of slowing times to take some pictures.

This place was smaller than others I have been to, despite them claiming they are largest. Saw some nice ones there. If only they’d stay still.

    Duck Boat

    21 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

A military vehicle? A boat? How about Both!!

The duck cruise take you on a short journey around a trail and a small river. The guide does a good job of telling entertaining stories.

My favorite story is about a plant that looks like an ordinary palm frond. The guide took his hat off and hung it on the back of the frond. It has a ton of barbs that dig in and hold on when you try and go against them. Strong enough to easily support the hat. So, if you find yourself caught up in something like this, somehow you're supposed to relax, and slowly back out. At that point, it easily releases and away you go.Читать далее

    Sky rail middle

    21 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

The sky rail was rather amazing, even though the weather wasn't the best. Still a breathtaking way to take in the rain forest plus it gives you a great idea just how tall and dense the foliage is.

After a bit of a trip, you can get off and get some more shots of the falls, then it's on to the next area.

Rain was starting to pick up, so we didn't want to stay too long. Plus we had to make our bus.Читать далее

    Bus ride back

    21 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

We managed to make it back to the Bus with about 2 minutes to spare :-)

The bus took us directly to our place of stay, so that was nice. I'm glad we made it in time though, as I don't think we would have enjoyed the walk home.

Brenda tried to fall asleep a couple of times on the way back, so perhaps it's a good thing we don't have anything planned for tomorrow and can rest up for our snorkel trip on Monday.

    Afternoon Stroll

    22 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

So many nice views, interesting critters, and of course the weather gives you a clear indication that you're in the tropics :-)

Just a few steps outside in the humidity and you're all sticky. We did take off in a different direction so all sorts of new things to see.

We're really looking forward to tomorrow for the Reef trip. Since Monday is the first super great weather day, all boats at all times are book to capacity.

I think our boat holds about 150, so we will see how crowded it really feels. It's a big ocean so I'm sure we can find some space to swim.

Besides all those people means that there are more chances there will be people that swim slower than me in case we find some sharks ;-)

Brenda will be putting her phone's life on the line in the waterproof case, so if the picture quality isn't as good, you'll know that it's just me taking pictures with the camera and my phone.

It's going to be an amazing experience and we'll catch you all up soon!

ПутешественникWe walked a lot so we felt better about our ice cream. I think we are starting a trend to have ice cream in each city we stay. Gelato is HUGE here. The gelato I had in Sydney (Manly actually) was crazy good. I’m sticking with gelato next time. Although Ella told me I need to try NZ ice cream. Hmm.

ПутешественникYea, super nervous about the phone and it’s super suit it goes in, even though I tested it twice. But, it’s my phone, right. Little nervous about the snorkel part since it has been soooo long. But Hey, way more excited because we are about to see one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, and the weather will finally be good! ☀️

    Pasta dinner in

    22 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Also trying some Aussie potato salad

The salad was ok, a bit more cucumber than I am used to. The pastas were quite good.

Not pictured were some ice cream that we got on the way back and ate first (you're supposed to eat dessert first when you're on vacation right? ;-)

The ice cream was super good. I had an English Toffee ice cream and a chocolate covered honeycomb crunch which was delicious too.

Ok, off to bed, we have an early morning and a long day tomorrow!

    23 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The trip out takes about 80 minutes. The sea was really nice and flat. I took some sea sick pills ahead of time just in case, and managed to go the entire day without any sickness. It was a nice ride.

You can also really tell when the water goes from a bit of a brown mixed color to the fantastic blue / green colors.

    David's Snorkeling Experience

    23 октября 2017 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    Here's how my experience went.

First off, let's just say that I was really nervous!! Not sure when the last time I went snorkeling but if I was to hazard a guess it would have been when we lived in California and had a pool. So . . . early 80's? Long time ago and I was a kid, so there you go.

We got wetsuits for a couple of reasons. Reason one, they are also called stinger suits to protect you from the jellies. Reason two, they should help us not get burnt.

Well, one for two isn't bad, but we will get to that later.

Putting on the suit is a comedy unto itself. A real challenge and it cost me quite a bit to make sure that Brenda did NOT film me struggling to get into the suit.

Anyway, I finally made it in the suit, and dangled my feet over the edge while I worked on my mask and fins.

A little bit later and I dropped off the side of the boat.

The mask is pretty good, but the nose area does seem to get some water into it every now and again. Plus I had a bit of a panic as I tried to figure out the correct breathing while my face was under water.

An exercise in forced relaxation allows you to really start to enjoy the experience. Plus, the snorkel sticks up a fair amount, so I didn't have to worry about water getting in over the top.

AND the wetsuit actually keeps you quite buoyant. So, there are times you can just drift along and enjoy the experience.

What an experience it is!! The fish are bright and plentiful, and the coral while isn't quite as bright as I was expecting, looked pretty good too.

Brenda and I were snorkel buddies, so we did manage to see a lot of the same things. However, there were some notable exceptions. I did manage to see a ray swimming below me along the coral bottom, and Brenda got to see a Turtle.

The first reef depth was a bit more than the second. Which means the second was a bit more up close and personal.

We spent a fair amount of time in the water at the first reef. Coming back to the boat a couple of times to fix up equipment (clear fog from the mask) or just take a bit of a break.

The second reef we didn't spend a huge amount of time in the water, but it was still really nice.

We got to go along the edge of the reef where it drops off to deep water. Wouldn't you know it, that's where I saw a shark. It was uncomfortably closer than I would have liked (which would have been like a speck in the distance so I could think it was some sort of harmless fish) and even though it's not a dangerous type (It was a white tipped reef shark) I did want to be best buddies with it either.

After that encounter I stuck to the shallow areas. I signaled Brenda about the shark, but she didn't see it, so we don't have any pictures from the encounter.

We were both pretty much done at the same time and made our way back to the boat. The second location had a lot more stronger currents and there were times that the water was quite cold, even with the wetsuits. Plus it was a touch more choppy out there. End results were near the boat I tried to swallow some saltwater by timing a mask drain at just the wrong time.

Not a super pleasant way to end on, but once I got the water out, I felt much better.

On the way back, the meds were starting to wear off a bit, so I could feel a touch of motion sickness, but it never got any worse, and I feel fine after the trip.

The back of my legs though . . . they are quite toasty where the suit ended and bare skin began. Going to feel those for a while, but nice thing is, we're headed to a location that is a lot like Oregon, so won't have to worry about sunburns anymore :-)

We did see some jellies, but managed to avoid them just fine, so no stinging.

Overall an amazing incredible experience and I could certainly be talked into snorkeling again sometime. ~ David
