    Another quaint German town.
    The town of black smokey beer. We had to try some and it initially tasted like pea and ham soup.
    The town had the typical Residence, chapel, town square etc, but also a rose garden and had 12 brewery’s back in the day.

    Time for another walk.
    First up, the Residence. Opulence. So much wealth!
    A lot of the ‘treasures’ were hidden during the Second World War. The roof was destroyed in 1945. Ever since it has been under restoration. A great job is being done.Read more

    It’s been a quiet couple of days with mainly cruising.
    But now we are in the Rhine, the river of castles, 20 or so? Let’s see how many pics I get?
    A monastery handed over by the Hapsburgs in exchange for wine.

  • Marksburg Castle.

    It’s all original, impenetrable to invaders.
    The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families.Read more

    It’s going to rain all day. Once again a fantastic guide. So much information.
    The Cathedral is huge and has many stories to tell. Apparently there is lots of underground crypts, rooms and caves too.
    Sayings of the people of Koln, “we don’t care”, “we don’t like Bavarians”, “we don’t drink beer from Steins”, “they are all cross eyed on the other side of the river” and many many more.

  • Beer tour in Cologne.

    So we did a private beer tour. Oh what a treat. Nico, our guide was great.
    A great crew too, mainly Australian.
    We enjoyed it.

    Another walking tour.
    These windmills were used to pump the water from one section to another. This, along with the channels that were dug, provided areas in the swamp lands to live and grow vegies and/or livestock.
    Apparently, the Netherlands is very low and they needed land. 😜
    But we know this already.

    First stop Noordermarkt. Lots of second hand goods.
    Then we wandered past Anne Frank’s old place.

    Then went into the Moco Museum where there was a Robbie Williams display about when he was suffering mental health issues.

    An early start today to get to the airport to pick up Anthony. Caitlin and Joost met us at the airport, we picked up the hire car and off we went. A full day including waiting for Airbnb to be ready and then a canal boat tour for Winifred’s birthday.Read more

    And plenty laid on for us all for free. Water, beer, cucumber sandwiches, chippies, jam and more. And it’s pretty central, just around the corner from Kings Cross station.

    So we’ve settled into the hotel and decided to take a stroll to Camden and the markets.
    A busy bustling place.
    Fremantle markets on steroids.
    I found it interesting but too busy so a bit of pressure to keep moving.

  • Foodie walking tour.

    The adventure started with a train that turned out should’ve caught a different one to get us closer to our start point.
    35 minute walk.
    Was nice though as we were well early.
    Into Borough Market we head. So busy. A bit of history here.
    We started with smoked salmon and cream cheese roll. Nice.
    Fish n chips. Average.
    Sausage roll. Yum.
    Cider and cheese. 🤢
    Humble crumble. Ok.
    Mead. 🤷‍♂️
    Then finished with the secret meal, honey comb donut. Hmmmmm.
    And we snuck in some Turkish delight along the way.
    All in all a good tour and a good guide.

  • Hire car London to Liverpool

    On a wet day, we have picked up the hire car from London City Airport and we are heading to Liverpool.

  • Wheelock.

    We made it to Wheelock on our first day. About 3 hours travel and 6/7 locks.
    We have docked just outside of town and walked in for a look around and yet more groceries! Maybe 3km each way.
    Interesting town.
    Have booked dinner at an Italian restaurant 100m away.

    A good days travel today from Kidsgrove to Trentham. 10-11 miles and one tunnel that took 40 minutes.
    Dropped into Wagamammas in Stoke-on-Trent for lunch. Also a bit of grocery shopping.
