  • Moving along the canals.

    June 22, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It’s just been a gypsy canal life the last few days.
Pulling up at pubs for lunch or dinner. Watching the bird life and towns pass by.
But we have had to hurry. We’ve been advised that a lock system will be closed for repairs and we have to be through them by Monday 24th. To do that we have put in some big days of canal boating, 7-8 hours a day. Not what we wanted to do!
Once on the other side, we have a short distance with 4 days to do it in. Let’s see what adventures we can muster.

  • Chester for the day

    June 25, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Coz we had to rush in the canal, meant we had a spare day. So into Chester we went.
    A good day.
Had a walking tour, walked the wall, lunch at The Kings Head a haunted hotel and then a bit of a stroll.Read more

  • Phase 7. The next and last bit.

    June 28, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today we left the narrow boat and our ‘lock bitches’ behind.
An over nighter in Manchester before picking the hire car and heading to Scotland.
Our train from Crewe to Manchester airport was cancelled so we jumped on a train that got us close and taxied the rest.
A roomy shower was nice once we arrived at the Crowne Plaza.

  • Bolton Abbey (Priory)

    June 30, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    A nice walk around here.
Started as a place of shelter in 1155.
    They built a monastery.
Then in the Dissolution in 1539, it was all kaput.
Parts of it were pulled down for other buildings in the area or sold to pay bills.
But a nice community area now.

  • Ingleton waterfalls walk.

    July 1, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌫 14 °C

Started the day driving to Ingleton and doing the 4.5 mile waterfall walk. Many many steps!
Also looked at the viaduct and the Ribblehead Viaduct. Then off to the Dent Heritage centre.
It’s been wet and cold and windy.Read more

  • Bolton Castle and other bits.

    July 2, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The distance between towns isn’t as far as we thought. So we are filling in time.
First up Hawes and Wensleydale Creamery.
Then a visit to Buttertubs pass.
Bolton Castle next, which I liked.
Aysgarth waterfalls which were disappointing. They charge for parking but paths and views weren’t up to scratch.

  • Its all about the Romans.

    July 3, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

“What have the Romans ever done for us?”
First up the Roman Army Museum. Giving us a taster of what they were up to here.
Hadrians Wall is just over there.
We went for a hilly walk to see the 300 year + Sycamore tree, but some twat chopped it down.Read more

  • Chesters Fort

    July 4, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

    More Roman stuff today.
So much potential at this site if someone had the money to dig it all out. It was ‘rediscovered’ in the early 1800’s by a wealthy land owner who had a bit of an obsession with Roman stuff. Just as well he did coz he also save Hadrians Wall. Recognising its significance.
We also popped into Hexham’s Abbey, built in 674 AD.

  • We made it to Scotland

    July 5, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Traffic was an issue and no parking in front of our accommodation. But we sorted it and are in the hotel room.
    Time for an evening walk.
And we are getting our charactures drawn.
Then for more of a wander along the Royal Mile. Couldn’t get into Edinburgh Castle coz it’s closed for a Madness concert!Read more

  • Arthurs Seat.

    July 6, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Apparently, a King used to walk up here for a lookie lookie.
Looks like others have the same idea.
Unfortunately it was so busy, no opportunity to take a photo at either monument. I hate to say it, but a group of American youth just hung around the main one, chatting and not moving on after they had taken their pictures.Read more

  • Hop n bus.

    July 6, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We always find a bus tour gives us a good oversight of a city.
Also popped into the National Museum.

  • Walking tour

    July 7, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Elena is taking us through the ‘old Edinburgh’.
Interesting history between the Catholics and the Protestants.
Also stories about a woman (Maggie Dickson) who survived a hanging and was knocking from inside her coffin. Bobby the dog (terrier) who was given the key to the city and didn’t leave his masters grave site for 12 years.
How Castle rock was formed by volcanic activity and a bloody big glacier. It’s where the castle sits now.
Old time effluent areas from the 1700’s are now the affluent areas now.
