• Day 149

    Wissembourg

    August 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Started our day with a 6am wake up with the most crazy thunderstorm we had ever experienced! The thunder was so loud and lightening was crazy. Jacques stayed up watching it and I went back to sleep 😴

After breakfast we Skyped Nan so she could see her families faces for the first time in years! This was really nice. We wanted to practice using Skype so that we can call her on Sunday when all the family come for lunch.

At around midday we headed back to the Palatine wine region! 🍇 we made a stop at Trud’s old house (Nan’s sister) in the village of

📍 Schweigen-Rechteneach - We visited the “German Wine Gate" which was built in 1938 under Butler’s regime. Here is the beginning (or the end) of the 85km German Wine Route of the Palatine region. The two-headed eagle which decorates the side of the gate had its swastika cut away after WW2

📍 Wine tasting @ Vinothek am Deutschen Weintor. Tried a selection of delicious local wines! We bought 3 bottles of a delicious oaked French white wine from a grape called Auxerrois

📍 Quick lunch stop for some bratwurst & Flammkuchen 🌭

📍 We spent the rest of the afternoon 10km down the road at the beautiful French village of Wissembourg 😍 which is surrounded by the old city walls. We slowly walked through the charming old town with historic half-timbered houses, colourful flowers everywhere and little river running through it. Absolutely gorgeous, loved looking in all the little shops here. My favourite shop was a cheese shop, le Goit du Terroir. I could have bought everything in there it all looked amazing! We tried a couple of cheeses and bought the most expensive but delicious truffle cows milk cheese I’ve ever eaten 😂 🧀

Highlight of the day was Levi deciding he was going for a nude swim in the big water fountain in the park near the church 😂 he wasn’t taking no for an answer haha it was so funny, definitely gave everyone a show haha

📍 Back home for dinner where Frank had been preparing our dinner since midday. Frank (my dad’s cousin) is a talented chef, I remember his amazing cooking since I was a kid! He called it “just a snack” but it was sooo delicious. We had veggie soup with croutons for entree, then rib eye with red wine jus (takes him 3 days to make), potatoes, green beans sautéed with bacon and onion + fresh salad all from the garden. Hollandaise sauce was an extra treat on the side 😜
