Benitiers Island

Today was one of our best days yet!

6am pick up to head south to Tamarin where our boat picked us up. The morning was perfect, water was flat and sun was out. We got to the spot where the dolphins were and jumped straight in with our snorkels an flippers 🤿. We swam with them as they came up out of the water, then followed them as they swam underneath us a few meters below before coming up again for air. It was sooo cool! Afterwards we went snorkelling at Paradis reef which was amazing, water was so clear and there were hundreds of amazing fish I’d never seen before! We had the most amazing views of Le Morne mountain in the backdrop. Then we visited to Mauritius’ famous Crystal Rock (the Eiffel Tower of Mauritius the tour guide called it)

Afterwards we had lunch at Benitiers Island with everyone from our boat. We got to know a really nice South African family who were from Johannesburg. All the tour guides were having a little party out the back, which Gus decided to join after a few rum and cokes 😂

During the boat trip home the weather took a turn for the worse and we had diagonal rain and hail! I’ve never experienced anything like it, the boat driver was wearing snorkel goggles to see 🤣

For dinner we had another Brian special, he took us to his favourite seafood restaurant called AK Gourmet. It was sooo yum. I think I’ve eaten more prawns in the last week than I have my whole life LOL 🦐Lue lisää

Today we went to Gus’s cousin Jannick’s house for Easter lunch. They live about 20 mins from where we are staying. He was so excited to see them, it was very cute! They made lots of different delicious curries, the octopus one was so good. I wasn’t quite sold on the whole pig LOL 🤣

Gus went back to Lilette’s house to stay while Jacques, Camille and I had a quiet night back at the apartment.Lue lisää

Le Pouce

Today was fun day exploring!
📍 Hiked Le Pouce mountain, we almost got to the top but it started to thunderstorm and rain so we enjoyed the view from 3/4 of the way. Verrry muddy and slippery way down 🤣
📍 Waterfall @ Minissy, this was amazing to swim in and so cold compared to the ocean here. We had to walk through a road of sugar canes to get there
📍 Cocktails, massage & facial at Veranda Resort, highlight of the day for me 🤪 Camille and I were in the couples hut and Jacques in the single, so funny
📍 Dinner at Lilette’s house with the family, Creole style and sooo much of it. My faves were the chicken somosas, fish curry, lentils & farata 🤤Lue lisää

Today we went into Port Louis
📍 Appravasi Ghat which is a World Heritage Listed site @ the port which used to be the Immigration Depot for the indentured labourers to enter Mauritius. Learnt some cool history 📖
📍 Brian’s house to meet his parents and collect some cooking supplies. Brian’s dad is baker and has owned his own pastry shop since 1980. He gave me some tips on how to make the best croissants 🥐 hehe
📍 Port Louis Market to buy ingredients for our dinner 🌿 we also did a tour of the meat section… I’ve never seen anything like it and I could almost go vegetarian thinking about it 🤣
📍 Back home for a cooking lesson with Brian. We made fried calamari, Rougaille and rice 🍚Lue lisää

Today was a verrry lazy day, didn’t actually take any photos except for the ones Jacques took of the sunset 🌅

Camille was feeling a bit sick so we just relaxed at home all morning, then we got a pedicure in the afternoon which was a treat.

While Jacques went for a sunset walk, Camille and I had a 2-hour nap 😴 We went to Neo’s for dinner 🇵🇹 (4th time and going strong)Lue lisää

Blue Bay

Today we drove down south to Blue Bay. The main beach was super busy with school holiday programs and lots of tourists.

We drove to a much quieter beach called Pointe d’Esny, it was beautiful with aqua water and amazing views of the mountains in the background. I think it’s the nicest beach on the island so far!

Afterwards we went to Francoise & Pierreve’s house (Gus’s cousin). They were such a funny family, we all laughed so much!Lue lisää

Grand Baie

Early start this morning to head out for fishing on the reef 🐠 The boat had a glass bottom so it was cool watching the fish take the bait and being able to see when the big ones were coming! We were line fishing, with no rods which was interesting but pretty easy. The fish seemed so small compared to what we’re allowed to keep in Australia, but the guy insisted “no good size” lol I also caught 6 double hookers 🎣

In the afternoon we met Brian at Flying Dodo brewery 🍺 for a tour on the beer-making process. Jacques enjoyed this! We stayed for a few drinks before heading homeLue lisää

This morning we went to watch Janick’s son Enzo in his show jumping competition, it was really cool! He came third overall for his category 🐎

Afterwards we met Brian for lunch at a French restaurant called Le Poivrier. We wanted to take him here to say thank you for all his generosity and being our unofficial tour guide in Mauritius. The food and cocktails were amazing!

In the afternoon, we went to La Cuvette for our last swim followed by octopus carpaccio in Troux Aux Bich, dessert at The Cloud & drinks/live music at N Joy. We can’t believe how quick our time has gone!Lue lisää

Today was our last day in Mauritius! We met Brian for coffee in the morning and went into town to get our hire car cleaned.

We cleaned up the apartment and headed to the airport ready for our 12-hour flight London! We had the most amazing time with Camille and Gus, couldn’t have thought of a better way to start our adventure!

This morning our flight got into Gatwick at 8am.
The first thing we noticed was the temperature difference, the air was refreshingly chilly 🥶

We caught the train into Bermondsey to Stephan and Julia’s house (Jacques cousin). Stephan took us for a walk and tour of the area, they live in such an amazing location! 10 minute walk to Tower Bridge, Borough Market and the London Tower.

We stopped for a coffee at Monmouth Coffee Company which was a super cute little cafe. Delicious pizza for lunch around the corner @ Franco Manca 🍕

Jacques and I did a grocery shop and cooked Mexican wraps at home for everyone which was a nice change!Lue lisää
