    Reykjavik impressions, Day 1 part 1

    Bus stop number 14 will be the place to be for almost each trips. I won't have to remember my hotel name, which is hardly to pronouns anyways lol but bus stop 14 is all I need to know.

    Islands no 1 industry is fishing followed by tourism. This is more or less the only big industries within this country.Les mer

    Centerhotel Skjaldbreid

    My accommodation for the time being, CenterHotel Skjaldbreid. Breakfast included. Nothing special but nice and clean. The stuff is also more than nice and welcoming.

    The hotel itself was in the middle of a downtown area and at the same time close to the sea and old Port. Great location to stay in Reykjavik.Les mer

    Reykjavik impressions, Day 1 part 2

    Within walked around the block of the hotel.

    Dinner: some smashed fish with potatoes and amazing bread with butter - loved it! . Restaurant: Lakjarbrekka.

    First night was super windy. In Germany a lot of things would have been flown around. It was really a fight with the wind! Seems to be a very colorful city and open also to grafitis, love it.

    They also seems to love the Christmas time just like me 😊. Love the little Christmas shops.    Les mer

    Golden Circle Tour

    Reykjavik translated means smoke bay (Rauchbucht).

    The most dangerous animal in Iceland is a sheep (no more dangerous animal living in Iceland). No moscitos living there either.

    One of the only animals Iceland originally had is the arctic fox. Sheeps have been imported for feeding purposes. Their number is restricted by the government as a uncontrolled population would destroy the landscape.

    Only 1.7% forest in this country at this point. Work has been done to increase that percentage. Before humans developed this Irland it was covered with about 30% of forest. Icelandic joke: what do u do if u get lost in the forest? U stand up lol
    Reason for that is because Iceland tries to increase their tree population again (it was ones down to 1%) so a lot of trees are still very small.

    Average temperature in the winter is 9 degrees celcius, in the summer is 11 degrees celcius. They consider 15°C to be a hot summer.

    Iceland has over 350.000 citizen. Their criminal rate, however, is very low. They only have about 140 ppl in prison where half of them are foreigners.    Les mer

    Driving through the American and Eurasian plate - nomansland

    Iceland expands every year about 2 cm. Reason for that is that the American and Eurasian plate are moving apart. The space is filled with vulcano material.Les mer

    2nd stop Geysirs

    Seen a lot of little Geysirs, including the big one, Strokkur (in German called Butterfass).

    In order for a Geysir (actual islandic word) to exist you need water, earth heat and underground pumping system.Les mer

    3rd stop Waterfall Gyullfoss

    Sooo u think I made this walk with spike shoes? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Well nope I didn't 🙈🙈🙈

    Super windy day again. Unbelievable how strong this wind can be over here.

    One part of the route was closed as it was too dangerous. The waterfall spilled water on the way which froze and made it impossible to pass this way.

    Well, I guess I gotta come back in the "summer time".    Les mer

    4th stop Islandic horses

    If a horse leaves the country it is not allowed to come back. It is also not allowed to import any other types of horses into Iceland to keep the breed pure. They have a very thick furr that keeps them warm and dry even though the outside layer of the furr looks like they are wet.Les mer

    3rd stop Black sand beach

    Almost all beaches in Iceland actually do have black sand. Such an amazing landscape! Location on the other side of Reynisfjara Beach.

    The sound and smell of the sea always gives me such a calm and peaceful vibe. I wish i would have had more time there. Next time 😜Les mer

    Northern lights part 4

    Straight after the south coast tour I got on the bus to the northern lights Tour as I was sooo eager to see them finally.

    Hope to get to see the northern lights today.

    First time I had this tour was on day one. Since then I went every night to be sure I will not miss a chance to see them (if you don't get to see them on the tour they let u redo the tour until u do see them).

    Update: I finally got see them. Patience pays off even though you can barely see it with your own eyes (during the night our eyes see more contrasts than colours) . It actually looks like a grey shadow over the horizon. As cameras absorbs the light more intensively u can take amazing pictures. The color of the northern lights can be different and variates depending on physics reactions in the sky.

    The best time to see the Northern lights is between October and April. Sky should be clear from clouds. As lower the clouds are as less are the chances to see the Northern lights (the third day we had a lot of clouds. The other days the sky was clear). Also usually the Northern lights mostly shown from the north (that's where the name comes from).
    One way of measuring the chances to see the Northern lights is the kp index. It goes from 0 to 9 whereas 9 is very rare and u can actually have a great view of the Northern lights with index 2 already.

    On day 1, 2 and 4 we had index 2 (on day 4 I finally got to see them). On day 3 we had index 3. They did show up, however, 45 mins after we left the viewing point going back to Reykjavik. The later tour was able to see them. I was so mad because one guy came with us and left with the later group cause he wanted to see the lights so bad and I was actually thinking about doing the same but as I had to get up early the next day for another tour I decided not to. I was mad about myself later on. But then the waiting still paid off on day 4 😊.

    I think at the end it was the waiting on the Northern lights rather than the Northern lights itself that iam thankful for. Looking up the stars, the mostly clear sky, in the middle of nowhere, facing the cold and the wind, nothing around u feels important and then you can just wait.... Makes u think about a lot of stuff.    Les mer

    After I could see whales on my first tour I rearranged the blue lagoon tour to attend the whales tour again today. Unfortunately it has been canceled last minute due to the weather (very windy). I preponed the blue lagoon again and choose to walk around one last time through Reykjavik.

    Also, wrote a letter to Santa clause the other day and finally put it in the mail. There is a first time for everything😊    Les mer

    Blue lagoon

    Perfect time I went there just while the sun was going down (if u can say going down as the sun is low the entire day).

    Blue lagoon is just like our German Thermalbad just less crowded and more chilled atmosphere, barely kids.

    Got to get a face mask there and a drink. Perfect ending of this trip.    Les mer

    Dinner at Lakjarbrekka

    My last dinner, lobstersoup at Lakjarbrekka. Very delicious food and the staff have been so nice! The waiter remembered me and gave me some more lobstersoup to go because I told him how good it was! Islandics are amazing!Les mer
