    Castle (Nijō-jō), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, a shogunate dynasty that would rule Japan for the next two and a half
    centuries. Being so close to the might of the Emperor in the nearby Imperial Palace, Ieyasu didn’t rely on just walls and moats to fortify his castle. As insurance against treachery, he had “nightingale floors” installed, floorboards that would creak when walked upon by intruders, along with concealed alcoves where his bodyguards could keep watch.     Emperor Shomu promoted construction of provincial temples throughout Japan in order to eliminate social unrest of that time, such as repeated political changes and riots, with the power of Buddhism (idea of nation protection). On the other hand, the emperor decided to build a Great Buddha. As the principal image of Todaiji Temple, the construction of the world largest gilt bronze statue of Vairocana was started. In 752, the ceremony for opening the eyes of a newly-constructed image was conducted with great eclat.

    ◇ Vairocana means the sun or light in Sanskrit, and is the founder of Avatamsaka Sutra. Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai) regarded as the Primordial Buddha of the universe in esoteric Buddhism in the Heian period is the Buddha developed from Vairocana.    Okumaya devam et

    The right hand of the great buddha, full-sized replica. The right hand of the great buddha is called a Semui-in. This hand means taking people’s fear.
    The left hand of the great buddha is called a Yogan-in. This hand means granting people’s wish.

    Buddhism is the teachings of Sakyamuni born as a prince of the Sakyas living on the border between India and Nepal in the 6th century B.C. (or the 5th century B.C.). When he was young, Sakyamuni became a priest, deeply worried about the life, aging, illness and death of man. Through self-mortification and meditation for about 6 years, he became awakened as Buddha. He spread the teaching that everyone has a possibility to become an awakened one, as well as the way to Buddhahood (spiritual enlightenment). At that time, Japanese people lived in pit-houses, hunting animals and collecting plants, which is called the Jomon period. Sakyamuni preached the teachings for 45 years, and passed away at the age of 80. Then, his disciples spread Buddhism throughout India. Around 270 B.C., Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty recommended Buddhism, and it became widespread. It is said that Buddhism came down to Japan in 538 (or in 552) from Baekje via Gandhara and Bamiyan through the Silk Road.

    ◇ The Shakya formed a tribal state in the southwestern part of Nepal, a small country located at the foot of the Himalayas. The birth place of Sakyamuni (sage of the Sakyas) is Lumbini.

    ◇ Sakyamuni (sage of the Sakyas) means a noble man in the state of Shakya. His real name is Gotama Siddhattha.

    ◇ Buddha means Gotama Siddhattha or awakened one.

    ◇ Nyumetsu means entering Nirvana or the death of Buddha.

    ◇ Nirvana means becoming absolutely free without Kleshas (earthly desires that physically and mentally annoy and harass man)

    ◇ Kleshas mean earthly desires that physically and mentally annoy and harass man.

    ◇ Gandhara is a provincial area of Pakistan today.

    ◇ Bamiyan is a provincial area of Afghanistan today.

    Kenbu Samurai Sword Dancing

    Kenbu
    Valiantly dressed in a crested kimono and hakama, the performer vigorously draws his sword for successive displays of fencing techniques while shuffling across the stage.
    He uses his fan to imitate fallen petals as an expression of the vanity of life, accompanied by the sonorously energetic voice of a poetry reciter in the foreground. Such is kenbu, a performing art established by samurai.

    “Kenbu” is a traditional Japanese stage performance art that utilizes the Katana（traditional Japanese sword and Japanese fan while expressing the poems that were mostly written by samurai. In feudal times samurais performed Kenbu to give themselves courage or to achieve mental concentration.     Senkoji Temple.
    Morning: Today we’ll drive to Togetsu Bridge
    and then make our way to to Senkoji Temple. At
    this 400-year-old temple, we’ll have a chance
    to practice Zen meditation with a monk.
    Zen is a branch of Buddhist thought that is built
    around the idea that divine wisdom resides in
    each person; meditation techniques are used
    to reveal this inner divine nature. Typically
    meditation consists of simple sitting and
    breathing practices that are meant to calm the
    mind and allow the practitioner’s focus to shift

    Fushimi-Inari Shrine 1

    Also known as “O-inari-san”, Inari shrines are the most familiar shrines to Japanese people.

    There are said to be some thirty thousand throughout the country, frequented by people of all ages.

    Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine with which all the others are affiliated.

    In the 1300 years since its establishment in 711AD, people have gathered here to pray for bountiful harvests, business prosperity, the safety of their home and family and the fulfillment of all kinds of other wishes.

    In recent years, the shrine’s Japanese worshippers have been joined by overseas visitors coming to pray or tour the shrine. Fushimi Inari Taisha is now known worldwide as one of the most iconic sights in Kyoto, and in Japan as a whole.

    We have a duty to protect Inariyama, the mountain on which this shrine rests, and pass on the tradition of promoting the harmonious coexistence of the deities, human beings, and nature that it represents.

    History
    Inari Okami, the enshrined deity of Fushimi Inari Taisha, was enshrined on the first Day of the Horse of the second month of 711, during the Nara Period.
    The shrine celebrated the 1300th anniversary of the enshrinement in 2011.

    Enshrined Deities
    Designated as an Important Cultural Property, the main shrine building contains five shrines together: a lower shrine, a middle shrine, an upper shrine and auxiliary shrines Tanaka Shrine and Shino-Okami Shrine.
    These five pillars of Fushimi Inari Taisha are named for the great virtues of Inari Okami that they embody.

    Festivals and Events
    Traditional festivals and rituals are held at Fushimi Inari Taisha throughout the seasons.

    Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

    : We begin our discoveries with a tour of historic
    Hiroshima, rebuilt after the devastation of August 6, 1945, and
    now a thriving, healthy city. As we tour Peace Memorial Park,
    near the very center of the area of the A-bomb blast, you will
    see memorials commemorating the victims of that fearful day
    and the ruins of a building that was less than 600 feet from the
    detonation. The famous Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome)
    was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The
    Peace Memorial Museum displays remnants of the bombing
    day and accounts of survivors, but in this park you will also see
    manifestations of the hope for world peace. At the Children’s
    Peace Memorial, people from all over the world have placed

    Okonomi Village

    Okonomi Village is situated in the city’s central shopping hub, just southeast of the Parco department store on Hondori. To get downtown, one can either take the bus or the number 1, 2, or 6 streetcar and get off at Hatchobori Station. From there, it’s a short walk down the Kinzagai shopping arcade, passing the Fukuya department store on your left until reaching Parco. Walk through or around Parco to find yourself on the trendy Namiki Street, with the Alice Garden plaza on the left. Hang a left here to find Okonomi Village as well as a plethora of other restaurants, most of which sell okonomiyaki.

    The entrance to Okonomi Village starts with a staircase, decorated with a cute okonomiyaki cartoon character inviting visitors to the culinary paradise awaiting above. Those who cannot climb stairs can use the elevator located down the corridor to the left of the staircase. The village consists of twenty-three okonomiyaki restaurants spread out over the second, third, and fourth floor of the building, with each floor resembling a fragrant flea market of vendors dishing out the same deliciousness in a distinct way. Since I have neither the time in my schedule nor the stomachs in my body to try every single restaurant, my journey today will have me scoping out a restaurant on each floor that stands out. Also, like diving into an okonomiyaki itself, I shall start my gourmet tour at the top of the village and gradually work my way down towards street level.    Okumaya devam et

    Mihara is known as one of the leading octopus producing areas in the Seto Inland Sea. In addition to octopus rice, there is an abundance of octopus gourmet foods such as “takoyaki” and “octopus tempura” using the brand octopus “Mihara Yassa Octopus” from the Mihara Fisheries Cooperative Association.
    A Daruma doll is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism.     Setoda Island

    The town of Setoda, part of Hiroshima’s Ikuchijima Island, is a small town with a population of about 9,000, located almost at the midpoint of the Shimanami Kaido, a route that connects Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture.
    Hiroshima Prefecture became Japan’s top producer of lemons in the early 1950s, accounting for 50% of the nation's total production by the early 1960s. Even today, the prefecture boasts the country’s largest production volume with Ikuchijima Island’s Setoda Town being one of the most renowned production areas.

    At a time when internationally imported lemons dominated the market, producers in Setoda teamed up and set out to cultivate their own lemons, and thus the Setoda Lemon brand was established! The island has a thriving processing industry that uses lemons to make drinks and sweets, and the Setoda Lemon is highly regarded by general consumers and chefs alike!

    Many of the farmers in Setoda have their own lemon fields, so if you visit the island from autumn to winter, you can see bright yellow patches almost everywhere! In addition to the actual fruit, there are a number of lemon-themed sites scattered throughout the town. I myself am a huge lover of all things lemon, so this place seemed like a dream! I couldn’t wait to see and eat as many lemon treasures as possible!    Okumaya devam et
