    Day 13

    June 22, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Raining intermittantly all day. 105 kms. Traveled from Truro, NS to Eastern Passage, just outside Dartmouth NS. Arrived at Denice Howell's duplex & stayed overnight. Barb Gibson joined us for evening. Much wine drank. Denice made beef stroganoff (excellent!) Entertained by her stories until 2:00 AM.

    1. Denice at home.
    2. The three Grande Prairie amigos.
    3. Picture of car carrier ship docked and unloading Mercedes and BMW cars from europe.

    Day 14

    June 23, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Slight hangover getting up this morning. Denice appeared completely unaffected even after a bottle & a half of white wine! Left Eastern Passage late (1:00 PM!). Only one coffee this morning. Somehow I functioned. Took highway 7 up east coast of Nova Scotia through piles of small blink towns. Would be a beautiful ride on a bike. Lots of twisting smooth roads.
Made resolution tonight to stop more often for pictures!
    310 kms.

Forgot today was #38 wedding anniversary. Good thing Larry reminded us!

    Day 15

    June 24, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Got up to partly sunny day. Fueled up with gourmet Macdonald's coffee & egg mcmuffin. Traveled route #105 to Cabot Trail. Weather turned cooler (9 deg C!) Started up west side of Cabot Trail. Not too much to see initially. Road resembles a bunch of Zs and Ws all strung together! Further up the coast it opens up to cliffs & ocean vistas. Beautiful & rugged.
Had supper at family restaurant along the trail. Ordered panko coated haddock fish plate. Larry would be proud of me! Discovered even though good intentions, the beef in the atlantic provinces does not live up to Alberta standards.
    391 kms

    1. Lookout +/- halfway across Cabot Trail of rugged coastline & highway.
    2. Suspect high winds are common along route! Hence the trailer tiedowns.
    3. Some lawn decorations along the route.
    4. Mystery nets in tidal inlet.
    5. Beulach Ban Water falls with short person in foeground for scale.
    6. Plaque describing above water fall.
    7. Plaque dedicated to Canada's fallen along the route.

    Day 16

    June 25, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Got up far too early this morning! Fueled at Timmy Ho's. Lined up in ferry parking lot for 2-1/2 hours. Loading was interesting driving down ramps into the bowls of the ship.
Landed on the Rock at 7:00 PM local time. Lost another 1/2 hour of time with zone change. 3-1/2 hrs out of sync with home.
Air was crystal clear. Could see rocky detail for miles (hence the nickname!) Snow on the hills on the horizon. To say it was brisk weather was understatement!
14 whole kilometres today including searching for Timmy Ho's this morning in Nova Scotia, and driving from ferry terminal to hotel in Newfoundland!

    1. Families of Cormorants nesting on anchor bollards. Some of them don't plant the landing too well!
    2. Wife with favourite beverage.
    3. Helicopter landing pad on deck of ferry
    4. Transports on upper deck. They get unload before any passenger cars!
    5. Entering the lower deck of the ferry...then driving down!
    6. Leaving Sydney Harbour.
    7. Tourist defense against sea-sickness. Wife pressure testing them! Ocean was a mill pond all the way across!
    8. Very intense tourist watching progress out of harbour.

    Day 17

    June 26, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Got up late at Pointe aux Basque. Made tour around the town. Stopped at local railway museum. Saw brass astrolobes on display. Liked the look of the cast replica outside! Fueled up at Timmy Ho's & gas. Not bad at $1.26/L for high test. Drove from Pointe aux Basques to GrandFalls-Windsor. Looking for rugged natural architecture that is in all the brochures when viewing Newfoundland. Didn't see much! Good #1 highway with a few potholes. Saw one young moose probably just turned loose from mama. Found we're wait-listed for a cabin for our return ferry trip. Could be a long 16 hour night sitting in recliner seats with a hundred other tourists!
496 kms. Stayed in Grand Falls-Windsor. Mediocre pizza, but good beer!

    1. Giant replica of astrolobe outside local museum
    2. Description plaque below replica
    3. Actual astrolobe brought up from a Portugese wreck in museum

    Day 18

    June 27, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This is being recorded after one ceasar, two 22 oz ales & a 12 y.o. old scotch! Thank you for spell check! Traveled from Grand Falls-Windsor to St. John's. Stopped at the Air museum in Gander NL. Very interesting displays. Enjoyed the displays of the 9-11 landings of the civilian and military aircraft that had to land there. Found the displays of WW2 items especially poignant because of Dad's service there during the war.
    430 kms

    1. Actual V-12 Merlin engine that powered so many allied aircraft during WW2. Same engine in the Hawker Hurricane that Dad flew on his missions on coastal patrol.
    2. Description plaque (they forgot the DeHavlland Mosquito!)

    Day 19

    June 28, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Last full day on the `The Rock'! Had brunch with Derrick & Sharon Cove at their house in Maddox Bay. Cozy house he has retired to. Big project finishing the basement, but he has nothing but time now.
Made a side trip to Cape Spear. The farthest eastern piece of land in north america. Weather was cold, rainy & foggy. Next stop going east is England!
Traveled across the width of the Avalon Peninsula from St. John's to next ferry stop in Argentia. Weather turned warmer and sunny. No rooms available in Placentia or surroundings. Sounds like big projects from oil giants including Husky Oil going on. Continued down the3 bay to St. Brides and got the last room in a bed & breakfast inn (CapeWay Inn). Spotlessly clean & comfortable with laundry so my wife can provide her husband with clean clothes!
    244 kms

    1. Weather against us at Cape Spear national park. There's a lighthouse in the background if you look closely through the fog.
    2. View due east from the park
    3. View northeast from farthest landpoint
    4. Same as above
    5. Actual tow truck in Placentia Bay!

    Day 20

    June 29, 2019, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Got up this morning to the best breakfast on the trip so far at the B&B we stayed at. A nourishing bowl of Fruit Loops & 4 hr old coffee stewing in the urn....Perfect! Girl working the front desk is named 'Paxton'! Grandma struck up a conversation with the staff lady whose daughter was having a baby soon. Proudly told her about all her grandchildren, and the she fell in love with 'Fenix's' name. She said if it happens to be a girl, she was going to pass on the name Fenix. Might be worth a return trip in a couple of years to see if there's a namesake in Angel's Cove, NL! Lady staying across the hall from us was born in Grande Prairie. Travelling across the country she has spent a month and half in Newfoundland alone
Another early start to the day...11:00 AM....Sigh!
Drove back up the coast to Placentia. Would be perfect for a motorcycle except for the potholes that could swallow a semi!
Walked the boardwalk in Placentia Bay and watched Grandma shop!
Loaded aboard the ferry 'Atlantic Vision'. This time we weren't loaded into the bowels of the ship, but actually drove up & parked above the waterline!
Success!! The wait list paid off for a stateroom cabin! Expensive, but worth it! I have a chance of living a longer life! As Brent put it, "A happy Grandma = A happy ferry!"
    40 kms

    Day 21

    June 30, 2019 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Hell night on the ferry! Somebody didn't sleep because of snoring, and the other because he kept getting woken up by somebody else yelling at him! Had shower and searched ferry kitchens for coffee...lots of coffee!
Disembarked in Sidney NS in pouring rain. Had a few false starts getting out of Syney going south. Ears must have still been ringing from the night abuse!
Rained hard and softly the whole day. Nothing to see with dense fog and low cloud deck. Started south & west on hwy #4.
Stopped in Truro NS to visit old high school & college buddy & his wife. Pete & Ann Havard. Both looked great after 45 years!
Continued on and stopped for night just outside St. John NB.
    641 kms.

No pictures taken today because nothing visible worth taking!
