    June 7, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Left Geelong just before 3:00pm and headed towards Portland for the long weekend. Uneventful trip although we are both still jumpy around birds at 100 kilometres an hour. Arrived around 6:00pm to Peter and Jillian all set up and saving us a spot at the Henty RV Camp. Great spot, very neat and clean and really well kept toilets. Dinner had been cooking on the way and the smell had made us extra hungry. Pumpkin soup and then slow cooked chuck roast with veg and of course a dessert. Dan had made a Torte. Boys went for a walk after dinner into town and then off to bed for an early night. I had been up since 5:00am.Read more

    Around Portland

    June 8, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Had a lazy morning, a couple of teas and coffees and then a walk into town for a look around. Saw the cable car go past which is pretty cute, it is right where we are staying. Did quite a bit of shopping and Dan got a good haul from one of the best camping stores we’ve ever been in, then to KMart Hub of all places where we picked up a few extra goodies for the van. Stopped in at the local cafe for a really nice brunch, good service and food. Didn’t feel ripped off buying brunch for a change. Back at camp for another coffee and some afternoon tea. Got the bikes out to ride to Cape Nelson Lighthouse but after a bit realised we’d left too late and we would be riding back in the dark so made our way back to the river and rode along there for awhile and into the Botanic Gardens for a look around. Jillian’s brother lives in Portland so they went for dinner with them and we used up some leftovers and watched a movie. One more coffee (hug in a mug this time) when they returned and then off to bed.Read more

    Site Seeing

    June 9, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Walked down to the wharf and marina to have a look around and along the foreshore. Stopped for coffee at our favourite coffee shop in Portland and then kept walking along to the Visitor’s Centre which is also the start of the Great South West Walk (a 250km loop walk along the coast and through bush land), we did the first probably 4 kilometres of the walk!!! Jillian’s brother picked us up at the Water Tower and we went out to Bridgewater Cafe for lunch. He drove us to the Blow Holes to have a look around and then back to camp. Dan and I walked into town for a shower and some supplies and then back for an easy dinner and a movie.Read more

Got up early and packed everything down, emptied the porta potties and got on the road. First stop was Cape Nelson Lighthouse which was actually a Lightstation and built in the 1880's. There would have been a little community here, there are a few houses and a cute little school. The landscape is pretty rugged and amazing with the sea and waves against the rocks. Put Timboon into the navigation for our next stop but decided to stop along the way at Hopkins Falls which was quite nice. Timboon is such a cute town, we had lunch at the Provedores then an ice cream at the Ice Creamery, didn't get to the Whiskey Distillery, one for the next trip. There is a good rail trail here from Camperdown to Timboon which we will come back and do one day. Onwards to Apostle Whey Cheese where we did a tasting and rated what we liked then purchased some cheese for our afternoon snack. Drove a little further to have a look at the Californian Redwoods which was amazing. We lost Jillian for a bit until it wasn’t funny anymore and out she popped from behind the trees. The trunks are so wide you can hide behind them!!! Our camp for the night was Beauchamp Falls which was a nice setting, drop toilets and camp fire with bbq’s set up at each site. Lit a fire and cooked dinner and then off to bed exhausted after another day of adventuring.Read more

    Long Weekend Over

    June 11, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Woke up to rain and a lot of wind which was a shame as Dan, Peter and I were going to go for a hike or ride while Jillian had her client meeting. Decided to leave and head towards Colac for a coffee and then we'd look around while Jillian worked for an hour. Took the wrong turn out of Beauchamp Falls Camp and realised after 2 kilometres and not much fuel left!!! Adjusted ourselves and got to Colac in time for the 4 of us to enjoy a coffee, set Jillian up in their van for her meeting and off we went for a shop. When we were all done we decided to head to Geelong West for lunch at Peter and Jillian's to finish off the food and enjoy the rest of the afternoon. Arrived home and cleaned up what was needed, too cold to do everything, will tackle the rest on the weekend. Another really relaxing and comfortable weekend, Portland is a great town and we really enjoyed Timboon and where we visited along the way.Read more
