  • Cullera to Gandia

    February 11 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Do today I actually walked 17 miles. I did it, I did it. I woke up to find the sky still very cloudy but at 9.30 it was already 20 degrees. The cloud stayed all day but the temperature rose to 23 degrees. I’ve been in shorts and T-shirt today and I’ve definitely caught some sun through the cloud. I have walked through a part of Spain that I’m now convinced grows the worlds oranges. There were oranges everywhere. I even saw crates of them ready to be sold someone had obviously been out picking them bright and early. As I arrived in Gandia the last two miles stretched on for ever. (these distances are tougher in trainers, they do not support the foot as well as trail shoes) I arrived at my hotel, another posh one with a spa and gym. It’s a shame I’m too whacked to use it. I’m off to the bar for a light snack and drink before I hit the hay.Read more

  • Oh what a beautiful morning 🎶

    February 12 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 61 °F

Gandia to Molinell - Well I woke up to sunshine lots of glorious sunshine. Thank goodness I packed my sun sleeves. I had a slightly shorter walk today at 12 miles but due to a detour away from busy roads I ended up on 15. Tonight I’m staying at a camp ground in a little house (as the reception called it). It’s actually very nice with a supermarket and restaurant and bar onsite. Today took me through lots of little villages and country tracks. Again there were oranges everywhere but not as many as the Dutch. Dutch cyclists, walkers and campers. This stretch of the coast Is full of these long stay campsites and I would say 70% of the camper and have Dutch plates. Who can blame them this is a lot warmer than the NL.Read more

  • Molinell to Denia to Xabia

    February 13 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

So it was forecast as a bit of a cloudy / windy day today with a distance too far for me to cover on foot. So I mapped out a reasonable path an set off for Denia. There were some beautiful bits by the sea but most of it today was road walking. When I reached Denia I headed for the bus station where I should have been able to jump on an Alsa bus to Xabia. However, Alsa aren’t going to Xabia and I had to wait 90 mins for the local bus instead. Anyway once here the weather has started to brighten up so it maybe a bit sunnier tomorrow.Read more

  • Jávea to Finestrat

    February 14 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

My oh my do I know how to pack a day. I woke up this morning not knowing what the weather would bring as we got severe weather alerts on our phones last night. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to find sunshine. I took a bus to Gata de gorgos where I transferred to a tram to Altea. I then walked through Benidorm to reach peace and tranquility in Finestrat. I remembered very quickly why I hate Benidorm. It’s a concrete jungle full of beer swigging brits. I sensibly booked my hotel a couple of miles away from the chaos. Martin and I spent 6 weeks in Benidorm in January back in 98/99 and it was pleasant but they’ve just kept building and attracting commoners. However that aside I’ve seen some beautiful beaches today with Benidorm being right up there. As it’s Valentine’s Day I treated myself to my final trip to the laundrette. I met a Mexican lady who has arrived in Spain after living in Israel for 15 years. She had a double mastectomy with oestrogen + breast cancer same as mine. We exchanged details to stay in touch.Read more

  • Benidorm to Cala Piteres to El Colpello

    February 15 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

So I realised my walk today would’ve been quite short with my original plan so I changed it up a bit. I left Finestrat this morning and walked back to Benidorm Old Town as I rushed by it a bit yesterday. I went to see the castle (that’s really not a castle) and the old church. I sauntered around until about 11.30 when I headed for the tram. Today I travelled 9 stops to Cala Piteres, this place was like the St George’s Hill of the Costa Blanca. Stunning houses and stunning views and not a person for miles and miles. I continued walking as close to the coast as possible until I reached El Compello. Well all of a sudden there were people everywhere. I treated myself to some chips in a cone ( seemed seaside worthy) This place is a little gem, beautiful beaches and tapas bars everywhere. Menu del día here starts at 12€ for 3 courses. I’m not starving after my chips but it seems like too good a deal to miss. I realised whilst walking today that tomorrow is my last walking day. My journey is almost at the end. I will be sad to go home. I really think I could spend the rest of my days travelling . We can but dream 🤣Read more

  • El Campello to Alicante

    February 16 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 66 °F

Today I woke up to some of the lowest cloud I’ve ever seen. I was tempted to climb a lifeguard ladder or two to see if I could touch it. It did clear sporadically to allow me to top up my tan. I actually walked through a mountain today. I was saying to bubba the other night they should put pathways in the tunnels that run through so many mountains along the coast. Then it happened it was built in the late 50’s I think definitely a first for me. So I arrived in Alicante and the castle was closed due to the high winds overnight. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll do Alicante in a day. Although it will be nice to see it all, this is definitely no Paris, Barcelona or Valencia but I’m sure I’ll find something to get excited about.Read more

  • Alicante in a day

    February 17 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Well I did it all in a day. I think the park and the castle were the highlights it’s a long old hike up a mountain to see the castle which of course is up my street. Alicante is not a place I’d choose to come back to in the future unless I was flying in or out of the conveniently placed airport. So my rest day ended on a whopping 12.99 miles and now my journey is complete.

Alicante in a day! Not for the faint hearted !
