WWW Concert

As soon as Chris expressed any interest in going to Japan, I knew we had to make a concert happen. Song of the Week has been going within our friend group for years; Chris always has impeccable music taste and introduced me to alt japanese music (Lucky Tapes to be specific). Researching venues in town, we found a small spot called WWW in Shibuya. In our time window, they had a headliner that seemed in the Japanese Shoegaze genre. We looked them up, and their most popular song on Spotify had 2000 views. Hipster band in Japan that you've actually never heard of? Sounded perfect.
This ended up being to our advantage because we couldn't figure out how to buy tickets ahead of time (need Japanese number and/or address). We showed up hoping to get in, and got lucky being able to buy tickets at the door. It was downstairs in a very small venue. The first band kicked off with a wild, screeching scream, and we knew we were in for a unique show. The first band, No Buses, was a solid opener. A bit less tidy than the others, but a fun time. They were all over the place genre wise; lite screamo, indie, experimental, etc. The next group was Tendouji; a quartet that called themselves "easy punk"; a description that I think is pretty apt! I'd say they were closest to a Japanese Offspring. Fun band for sure, they came onto the stage with the Ole song of soccer fame. Then came the headliner, Group 2. Paraphrasing Chris, they were "japanese indie funk jazz experimental shoegaze pop"; basically everything we wanted. They were fantastic and quirky, giving a really fun show and an encore. The sound system kind of ruined other venues for me; clear as hifi headphones and the perfect level of loud but not blaring. Also the disco ball must have been made from precision ground glass or something, because it was simply better than any other disco ball I've seen. After the show we bought a few shirts and a CD to help support the bands (and because they were awesome). Check out the Spotify QR codes in the pics. This was exactly what I hoped for with a music night out in Japan with Chris.Meer informatie
