  • Sprint to the startline!

    August 25, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

Our initial plan for the start of the trip was to stay in Tokyo for a day to acclimate to the time change. Then we'd make our way to Fuji to start climbing on Tuesday, stay at an 8th station hut for the evening, and make the morning summit the next day. However, Typhoon Shanshan was forecasted to hit Fuji by Tuesday so we rescheduled to head straight for Fuji and hike the first full day of the trip. After booking a bus to Kawaguchiko, I needed to quickly store my business bag until the work portion of my trip. My initial plan of storing at the airport didn't work for that length of time.... so I downloaded the first "luggage storage" app that popped up and booked a random place in Shinjuku near our bus transfer. After sprinting down the street, trying to recall what side is for walking, I hopped in an elevator next to a small izakaya, went to the 5th floor and dropped it off. I left a Tile tag in the suitcase, genuinely curious if I'd ever see it again. I sprinted back to the station, barely making the bus, and we were off to Fuji!Read more

  • Kawaguchiko Plaza Hotel

    Aug 25–27, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We checked in late at night to this hotel right across from Kawaguchiko station. Jetlagged, we popped up and went right to sleep. We woke up to a surprise view of Fuji from our room! Had no idea. The view from the station, the hotel, and of course the famous Lawson conbini was gorgeous.Read more

  • Fuji Climb

    August 26, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Our original plan was to stay in a hut middway and then hike for the morning. But, Typhoon Shanshan had other plans so we scrambled and made Monday happen. Hiking up it was toasty the first 1/3 or so, and the humidity was a bit rough. But, we got to the first hut and refreshed with a Snickers and Aquarius (electrolyte drink). We also got our first stamp on the hiking stick! Each hut burns their ensignia on the way up, making for a fun souvenir. It transitioned to more lava rocks for awhile, and was very steep before going back to switchbacks. The overall hike is about 4750 ft in only 4 miles up! By the 8th station we crested the cloud line and there was a sea of clouds below you. Definitely makes sense Fuji is so revered; it was a kinda etherial experience (plus jetlag and altitude). Near the top, a random japanese man turned to me and dapped me up saying we got this; definitely a highlight, he and his friend were super nice. At the top, we got the final stamp, and I bought another Aquarius from a VENDING MACHINE. Absolutely wild. We looked at the caldera and enjoyed the view and then headed down. Kinda wish we had poles on the way down, just endless lava rock switchbacks about as steep as the way up (separate down climb hike). 10/10 amazing day, never need to hike it again. Fun fact, from getting on the plane in CO to the top of Fuji was only 36 hours 🙃Read more

  • Ide Sake Brewery

    August 27, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After a dehydrating day of hiking, we decided the best next step was to go to sample sake at 9:30am. We were the only two on the tour, and the facility, staff, and sake were all amazing. The Ide Sake Brewery has been around since the Edo Period, and it shows! They've also started in whisky, and it was pretty good as well. We learned about the process for making sake and about the different varieties, but mostly learned that large pours of sake "tasters" (full pours) when jetlagged, dehydrated, and tired resulted in a strong mid-morning buzz. We sought out a big bowl of Udon afterwards to help recover.Read more

    August 27, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

For the latter part of my trip, I'm doing some business development work for BCT! I was stressed out trying to figure out how to take suits or get them through my trip. So I went for getting some made here in Tokyo. This shop seemed the best for foreigners, and it proved right! The main tailor there was Japanese/Australian, so his japanese was fluent, and his english had an Aussie accent. The two suit combo with 3 undershirts price was the way to go, and for a tailored suit it was super reasonably priced. Even went full wool on one of them! There were so many details I didn't expect; cuff angle, pocket angle, shirt collar style, number of buttons, button style, etc. He walked me through all the styling questions, as I explained that my REI hiking button up I was wearing was, in fact, Colorado-chic. One neat detail; they embroider your name, so I went for full Katakana as a neat reminder of where I got it.Read more

    Tokyo Disney Sea

    August 28, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Old habits die hard and the mouse gets his due. Had to pay homage to my old employer... and I'm still a bit of a Disney geek at heart. Plus, it's literally half the cost of Disney in the States! This was last minute planning, and we wanted a chiller day after Fuji/jetlag/Rachel's wicked sunburn kinda wrecked us. We took a leisurely stroll around the park, rode a few rides, ate some tasty food. The hot dog gyoza was hearty, and the Salty Ice Cream Clam was refreshing with the heat. The, um, interestingly packaged, "pretzel dog" was a suggestive sausage stuffed in a baguette.
DisneySea is probably the best theme park in the world; immaculate theming, unique rides, and all with the attention to detail Japan often shows. Oh, and the average attendee was much more behaved than the US parks sees; no tantrums in sight. Payment has been made, Mickey won't come knocking for awhile now.

  • Ishigaki Arrival

    Aug 29–Sep 1, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We headed down south to inadvertently avoid the Typhoon. Turned out our Ishigaki timing was super lucky as the Typhoon had already passed and was hitting the mainland.
Once we got there, we ate a burger with Ishigaki Beef, found my chip brand, and headed to the hotel. When we got there, it was a self check in kind of thing. We went to open our door and the handle flew off. Then inside, the ceiling had lots of questionable spots; looked like black mold. We later found out the place was a recently rennovated love hotel... we ended up going somewhere else and slept a bit better.Read more

  • Snorkeling Ja?

    August 30, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We woke up early, walked to a conbini for egg sandies, and then embarked on our Snorkeling tour with Andy; a German tour guide who had been diving here for 7 years. In stereotypical form, he was polite but super blunt. Apparently my listed weight and height was more muscle than fat from what he expected, as our initial booking made him worry about any of his life vests fitting 😅
He made some weather/wave checks, and we started in. It had been a minute for both of us, but we got the hang of snorkeling pretty quick. The area was beautiful, although the reef had a decent amount of bleaching. We saw some unique finds like a Napoleon fish, sea snake, squid, and the main attraction: sea turtles. Andy was very good at spotting them and knew their typical breathing patterns to help time when they would rise for air. We got to swim with a turtle whenever it rose from it's ocean bed nap/belly scratches to get some air. We had some get really close to us! Definitely was an amazing experience; we both want to do more snorkeling in the future (luckily have more booked for tomorrow).

  • Nutstown Coffee

    August 30, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Nutstown coffee was our light lunch, and it was a California hipster coffee joint in a little island town. They recommended oat milk (makes sense given the name) and oh my, it was the best iced latte I've ever had. Little walnuts on top with whip cream did some heavy lifting. Cool spot, probably gonna hit it up again (either in my next trip or my next life).Read more
