Sparta/Mystras

Very little remains of ancient Sparta. Today, it is a pleasant modern city with wide streets and lively public squares.
We overnighted here in order to visit nearby Mystras.
Mystras was the Byzantine empire's last significant outpost following the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. It is situated on the side of a mountain containing ruins of the city including numerous churches and at the very top, a Crusader castle.
As with so many places we have visited, it was all up hill; rocky trails and stairs onwards and upwards. Our poor legs were wobbling by the time we reached the castle. But the fantastic views from the top made it worthwhile.Læs mere
