  • First week in the shed

    August 12, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

    Well it's different.
The wool is worth so much out here it's crazy they sort each piece out I to individual piles test it then sort it to which type of wool it is. All the young sheep the wool is tested and they will only keep good wool producing sheep.
I spent half the week on the table sorting the wool into sections then the other half on the board clearing up after the shearers.
It's all has to be very quick work never time to rest or think.
They say a rousie should never stand still and its true you never do.
I even had a go shearing but hell its different.
    Goof experience though.

  • New sheds

    August 18, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Since I have been down in NSW in the shearing shed I went to two other sheds after the first one. It was really interesting to see how other people set their sheds up and how differently they process their wool.
The second shed was much larger with 6 shearers and two tables to process the wool.
Then the final shed was another much smaller older shed. We only had three shearers again and the one table.
I really enjoyed it very interesting!!! Had a great caravan to stay in as well for the second week.

We first notch the wear depending on if its a ram or a ewe and then they get two vaccinations one is b12 and the other is scabbivax. The finally the tail is docked with a hot iron and the balls are rung but just leaving both their. Quite strange but apparently better and what the buyers want.

    November 5, 2022 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

So yesterday we found a calf who had beeb abandoned and we couldn't find who the mother was. So we brought it home and started it on the bottle. Which surprisingly it took to very very quickly.
Today we drove round checking the cows which are calving and one calf has died. So we thought we would try and adopt the calf onto the cow.
I had to skin the calf because none of us had done it before. I had no clue what I was doing. But was good fun and satisfying.
Not bad for a first try I don't think!
