One major altar; several side altars.The church was elevated to cathedral status by Pope Leo XIII in 1878.The architecture of the city was beautiful.Gateway of the Citadel: last remnant of the wall (torn down 1829) surrounding the city.Jose Gervasio Artigas: national hero, considered father of Uruguayan independence.Mausoleum of Jose Gervasio Artigas, located under his statue.Salvo Palace (1928): originally intended to be a hotel, but ended up a commercual/residential bldg.Legislative PlazaLa Carreta Monument - captures typical scene of the Uruguayan countryside: an ox-drawn cart.1We visited a neat mkt where some of their specialty meats were cooked.
