Scarlett turns 7

Because the flight situation in the region hadn't really returned to normal, I packed my bag, hired a car and started the journey down to Jeddah via car for my latest flights back to Mullaghmeen to see the whanau, especially one very excited almost 7 year old. The drive itself is pretty mind numbing - hour on hour of dead straight roads until you hit the section leading into Jeddah and traffic starts building. I had heard that Jeddah traffic was mad and it certainly lived up to its terrifying reputation.
I ended up flying Turkish Airways via Istanbul and it was excellent. 4 hours up to Istanbul, that I slept pretty much the whole way on after leaving Jeddah at 1.30am and having an entire row to myself. 1 1/2 hours in the new Istanbul airport, which is enormous and really awesome, and then on another flight of about the same length and landed in Dublin at 9.30am - brilliant.
After getting back to Mullaghmeen on the 19th we chilled for the next day and half until the main event of this trip - Scarlett's 7th birthday, which even now writing this I can't believe. Joan and I standing in our kitchen at Maraetai Heights Road telling me she was pregnant after so many years of trying feels like it was yesterday, so its hard to get my head around the fact our first is now 7 years old. Scarlett has continued to grow into an incredible young lady, obsessed with beauty products just like her Mum, and remains staunchly kiwi in Fermanagh, just like her Dad. She truly is the best of both of us and I am incredibly proud of how well she has adapted to the big move and how she just takes everything in her stride. The day itself was full of laughs, presents, fun, and more presents - ha ha, and it was rounded off by a really great family meal with everyone at Molly's in Irvinestown, after not being able to be with her last year for her birthday in Maraetai, this year was just perfect.
The other really important part of this trip was the memorial rugby game down at the club to celebrate Ernie and to raise money for two very important causes, the British Heart Foundation and for Enniskillen RFC. A huge amount of planning and organisation by Joan and Shiner went into the day and everything on the day went perfectly. The family have donated a new defibrillator case to the club meaning that should anyone in Mullaghmeen or the surrounding areas need the defib that it is externally housed and available to be used. The match itself was played between an invitational team made up of players from around Ulster who knew Ernie and was arranged by Shiner and they played against an Enniskillen RFC selection. The players were piped out onto the field by a member of the Enniskillen Dragoon Guards playing Fare Thee Well Enniskillen - it was just perfect. The day was a roaring success and raised almost 2,000 pounds for the BHF and the club.
The next day we had Scarlett's birthday party up at the club with all her class mates from Ballinamallard PS, which was chaos and brilliant, everyone had a blast on the bouncy castle and gorged themselves on chicken goujons and chips - just like you should do at a 7th birthday party. David, Edel and most of their ones made the trip down for the party which was awesome, they are all great craic and its so awesome for Scarlett and Frankie to get to know some of their northern irish cousins more.
Unfortunately reality hit the next day and it was time to pack my bags, get on that Number 30 bus and head back to Dublin for my flight back to work. This trip was so much fun and was filled with family, great times and the rugby club - just like it should be. The next time we all see each other again will be at the end of July in Italy, so this was going to be a long stretch but the thought of a coupe of weeks at Lake Garda would get me throughMeer informatie

A visit to Amaala
2 juli, Saoedi-Arabië

Red Sea Global are currently developing two luxury tourism destinations on the west coast of Saudi, Shura Island down at the Red Sea site and also Amaala, which is about 2 hours north of Turtle Bay.
My team tends to spend most of our time at our desks without getting out and seeing the incredible construction projects that we are supporting. So I decided we would all get in a couple of cars and go and see Amaala, which had recently opened its first hotels when we went up there.
We spent the day admiring the Daraah Staff Village and the amazing hospitality assets at Triple Bay including the yet to be opened Equinox , the Four Seasons, Six Senses and the jaw dropping Amaala Yacht Club.
Just another example of the incredible, mind boggling developments that Red Sea Global are delivering.Meer informatie
La Dolce Vita and Frankie's Birthday

One of the things Joan and I have been looking forward to since I came to Saudi was being able to take the girls into Europe for a big summer holiday adventure. After a bit of searching different locations and ideas, Joan came across a great deal in Italy in an area that she had spent the summer in just before we met, so we locked in a few weeks camping at the Eurocamp site in Pacengo, Lake Garda in Italy.
Joan and the girls got there a week or so before I did and got settled in nicely in the awesome 2 bedroom tent we had rented, complete with a kitchen fridge etc - it was camping but this was not a DoC campsite from NZ. Scarlett and Frankie made some lovely German friends and Joan hung out with them before I was able to get on a flight out of the Red Sea and make my way to Italy.
After a very easy flight out of RSI to Milan via Doha, I spent a night in a hotel next to Milano Centrale station and was on my way via train to Pacengo the next morning. I got the train to Pesciera del Garda and then after an easy 10 minute drive I was at the campsite. The campsite itself was perfect for us, lots of families, a great big pool with an excellent bar/restaurant which kept us in Aperol spritzs, Hotdogs, Ice cream and the most amazing Caprese sandwiches for the next 2 weeks. There was so much to do for the kids morning, afternoon and night - it really couldn't have been any better.
We spent our mornings with Scarlett and Frankie at kids club for 2 hours some days while Joan and I went up to the beautiful village at the top of the hill for coffee, then into the pool for a few hours, a leisurely lunch, more pool time and then trying to hide from the sun in the afternoons. After spending most of the previously 6 weeks inside in Saudi as summer temps soared into the 40's, I was hoping for a little bit of relief in Italy but given Europe was having one of its hottest summers ever, and large swathes of Spain and France were threatened by bushfires no relief was available, and instead of having AC to cool us, we spent 2 weeks in 37 degrees in a tent and a small shade gazebo during the heat of the day.
In the evenings, we either cooked something simple in the tent, or went up the hill to an excellent restaurant in the village, or down the hill to another excellent seafood restaurant on the shore of Lake Garda where we ate like kings, sipped on lovely cold Peroni Crudo beers or enjoyed a cheeky Aperol Spritz or two. We really were living the dream.
We met a lovely Dutch couple that first week and the girls had loads of fun with their daughter Lindsey while Joan and I hung out with them in the evenings .
A huge highlight of that first week together was being able to celebrate Frankie's 5th birthday, which we certainly did in style. We spent the morning in our normal routine and then Frankie got to open her birthday presents, which we managed to keep hidden until the big day, no mean feat in a relatively small tent - ha ha. After opening the presents and another marathon pool session we headed up the hill to the village and caught the bus to Gardaland , the local themepark. We had an amazing afternoon at Gardaland with Frankie getting to meet Peppa Pig for her birthday, which she absolutely loved. We had gone to the park in the late afternoon to try and avoid the heat as much as we can, and there is a fantastic Legoland water park there too so we made a bee line for that after meeting Peppa. We spent the next couple of hours swimming and hitting the waterslides before video calling the whanau in Fermanagh and then heading to a pirate themed restaurant for her birthday dinner. Frankie had been determined that she wanted to go on a roller coaster all day so we thought we would start nice an easy and go on a log flume ride to see how that went. Safe to say Frankie is not quite as ready for roller coasters as she thought she was - as you can see in the photo - ha ha. After that fairly unsuccessful introduction to thrill rides we took the rest of the evening nice and easy and ended up on some awesome 5 year old appropriate rides and a beautiful old carousel before calling it a day and heading home - what a day that was. Gardaland was so awesome, we went back and did it again 2 days later !!
When I left Auckland 2 years ago Frankie was essentially a baby, just turned 3 years old, full of life and mischief and now she is a proper big girl - she has thrived at nursery at Ballinamallard primary school and has developed so much in the last 2 years. She has lost none of her sass and cheeky charm at all but has blossomed into a lovely, thoughtful, funny young woman and I couldn't be any prouder of her.
Another highlight of our first week in Italy was the bike ride we took to Lazise, a beautiful lakeside town about 4 km up the road from where we were staying. We hired bikes and headed out in the blazing late morning sun. After a great effort from Joan and Scarlett in tough conditions we arrived in Lazise, after a quick hydration break at a lakeside tiki bar, and started exploring. The heat was getting really bad so after a quick look around the old town we had lunch at a small restaurant and got served by quite possibly the rudest Italian waitress of all time, and she has some competition to that honour !! We battled our way back to the campsite, every one the sweatiest they had ever been and high tailed it to the pool for some relief .
An absolutely amazing first week - Joan had to head back to Enniskillen for a few days to work so the girls and I were on our own for the next few days.Meer informatie
Another week in paradise
3–12 aug., Italië
☀️ 35 °C
Scarlett, Frankie and I waved Joan off as she headed back to Enniskillen for a few days of work that couldn't be avoided, and headed back to the tent to plan out what the next few days had in store for us, we needn't have worried as the next few days were pretty much the same as the first week had been - lots of pool time and some rapidly growing independence from our 5 and 7 year olds. They were more than happy to go off to kids club and the bravery only grew stronger as Scarlett became our minimarket shopper, taking herself off with a bag and some cash in the mornings to buy bread, milk and other essentials and then after going down to the shower block that was a 5 minute walk from the tent, that had a brand new shower area just for kids rather than the one 30 seconds from the tent , with a couple of Dutch friends - the girls now decided that they would be showering there and were more than happy to head down by themselves while Dad sat and waited to catch a glimpse of them returning so my blood pressure could return to normal - ha ha.
We continued to go out in the evenings for dinner, with the girls making friends everywhere we went and playing happily after eating while Dad enjoyed his meal and the odd glass of Rose. We were in a great little groove but talked every night before we went to bed about how we missed Mum and hoped that she was having fun at home with Granny Linda.
One of the highlights of our few days unsupervised was a trip to the Aquarium beside Gardaland, the girls absolutely loved seeing all the fish and and other exciting things, Dad was just happy to be in an air conditioned building for an hour or two.
Another thing that was awesome to see was the bond that the girls had been making with the "leaders" from the camp staff who took care of them during kids club, lead all the group dances and put on all the activities in the evenings. They were a really great bunch that everyone seemed to get on with and like, Scarlett and Frankie had taken a real shine to a girl called Elissa who always seemed to make time for them and to make sure they were having a brilliant time. Evening activities included talent shows, group dancing, visits from the Gardaland mascot Prezzemolo, quiz nights and the girls favourite a glow in the dark party where the girls each made their own glow in the dark t shirts, which was awesome.
Then before we knew it we were getting the bus down to the train station in Peschiera and catching the train to Verona to meet Joan off the bus from the airport. We had a brilliant day out in Verona exploring the narrow cobbled street, eating some amazing food, finding the best candy shop in the world and of course going to see Juliet's balcony. We were telling the girls about why this balcony was famous and that whenever everyone goes there they touch Juliet's boob for good luck. After a look around the market we got to the balcony and got our photos, but Frankie was inconsolable afterwards, we asked her why she was sad and she had thought that Juliet was a real person and that she was going to touch her boobs and not just an old statue - ha ha. So funny. Another brilliant day out.
There are two theme parks in Lake Garda and after Joan found out that one of Scarlett's friends, Abraham and his family were going to be there at the same time as us we arranged to meet them at Caneva World. We spent another awesome day going on loads of cool rides - highlights being the dragonfly ride (not for Dad, whose fear of heights kicked in hard on that one) another log flume, which Frankie declined to come on and some small self drive cars, which Joan very bravely decided to go on and let Frankie drive. Ive never seen Frankie so excited and Joan so apprehensive before Frankie floored it and off they went. The brilliant day out finished with a full on Rambo themed action stunt show, which was awesome and a really cool drone light show as we were waiting for our bus to get home.
For our last day in Pacengo we took it pretty easy, normal activities during the day coupled with Joan and I getting things packed up and the tent cleaned out a bit before heading to Milan the next day. We had a beautiful dinner down at the seafood restaurant by the lake as the sun was setting before getting some family photos and making our way back to the campsite. The girls had one last evening with their new bestie Elissa, we got some photos and after some lovely hugs and a few tears we said goodbye to the leaders and headed back to the tent.
Joan and I sat up that night and had a couple of medicinal Aperol's and just chatted through how perfect this holiday was for us . The girls are at such a brilliant age for this type of holiday and Joan and I have always loved camping. They had so much fun, made so many friends and will hopefully take away memories that they will hold onto forever.
We said our goodbyes to Pacengo the next morning and made our way to the train station and got on headed for Milano Centrale one last time. We enjoyed a top class meal at Wagamama in the station before getting on another train and heading out to Malpensa airport, where I was getting on a flight that night and Joan and the girls were staying at the airport hotel before heading off to France to continue their summer adventure the next day. The best holiday ever had one more surprise in stall though as I managed to get upgraded to Business for my flight back to Doha.
I struggle to put into words just how perfect this holiday was. We had an amazing couple of weeks in Italy filled with fun, laughs, a few tears and just the absolute best quality time I could possibly have wished for. All of this made the goodbye hard and the next week back at work even harder.
Until next time Italy, I am officially head over heels in love with you.
Ciao bella xxMeer informatie
