The Coastal Way is more of an umbrella term for as many as three different paths that snake their way either literally along the coast (i.e. Camino Litoral), or higher in the hills, usually within view of the water. My journey combined routes based on the Albergues I wanted to stay at, what I wanted to see, or just happened on its own.
Symbols:
In addition to common shells on the pilgrimage route, there are also some unique symbols, such as wooden staffs and gourds that represent ancient pilgrims. The wooden staff helped with long journeys, and the gourd was an ancient kettle or wine bottle.
The cross of the Order of St. James, which is red and represents the spirit of sacrifice and bloodshed. The three ends of the cross are lilies, which represent purity and chastity; the end is a sword, which represents the fight for Christianity and the battle of faith; it is also said that Saint James died by the sword.
