  • Akershus Festning

    August 11, 2024 in Norway ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Our first stop of the day was at Akershus Fortress, which is a medieval castle that "was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city...The Castle has also been used as a military base, a prison and is currently the temporary office of the prime Minister of Norway." All of this from Wikipedia. Sorry for my poor research.

During World War II, the Nazis executed a lot of people there. Seven Norwegian kings and queens are buried there.

I took a ton of pictures, so I will probably make two posts about the fortress.

  • National Museum

    August 11, 2024 in Norway ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Another really great museum! Once we figured out the flow (the rooms are numbered - all 88 of them), we saw everything from ancient Greek and Egyptian pottery and sculpture, through Stone and Iron Age weaponry and jewelry to Scandinavian furniture and clothing through the ages. We also saw hundreds of paintings, including a replica of the Mona Lisa, and originals by Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Manet, Van Gogh, Picasso... So many famous artists whose work I had never seen in person before. It was very very amazing. I'll probably need a couple of posts to share all of my favorite pieces from this museum too.Read more

Embroidery and paintings. They also had a TON of porcelain through the ages, as well as furniture. I liked a lot of the mid-20th century stuff. It reminded me of Grandma Ruth"s house in some ways

  • Sagene Kirke

    August 12, 2024 in Norway ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today, McKelvie and I slept in and then decided to explore the neighborhood around her apartment complex. We walked south and discovered a ton of sushi restaurants, a couple of pizza places within walking distance, a burger joint or two, a lot of small grocery stores, and many apartment complexes - a pretty nice, diverse neighborhood with a lot of green spaces. We also found the Sagene Kirke, a beautiful church. Wikipedia says, "The church was inaugurated in 1891. It was designed by architect Christian Fürst in Neo-Gothic , with red jointed brick, spire and roof covered with slate, and 600 seats. The altarpiece is a copy of the altarpiece in Antwerp Cathedral , 'The Descent of the Cross by Rubens.'...The organ is a Hollenbach organ from 1891 and the only remaining Hollenbach organ in Norway."Read more

After getting McKelvie's student ID, we returned to the Oslo Opera House to see if we could go inside or go on the roof. We didn't get to do this the other day because the line to get in was too long. Today, we were successful! It was beautiful!Read more

  • Oslo Domkirke

    August 13, 2024 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Our final stop of the day was to see the Oslo Cathedral. They didn't allow pictures inside, so I found some online to include. "Oslo Cathedral (Norwegian: Oslo domkirke) — formerly Our Savior's Church (Norwegian: Vår Frelsers kirke) — is the main church for the Church of Norway Diocese of Oslo, as well as the parish church for downtown Oslo. The present building dates from 1694 to 1697" (Wikipedia).Read more

  • Leaving my baby...

    August 15, 2024 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

I didn't cry too much. It doesn't get easier each time, but I guess I'm getting better at it. I took the Flytoget Express train again. It was pretty full. I certainly understand the Oslo airport better now. Security was relatively easy. I don't look very sketchy to Scandinavians. My plane boards in about an hour.

I've also included some pics of my last metro ride, too .

  • Flight from Keflavik to Denver

    August 15, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

This was a LONG DAY! Very little sleep. Nice visit with a nurse named Nancy from Castle Rock, Colorado. She and her niece had some t the week in Iceland. They visited all the best spots and were impressed with McKelvie's master"s program and our reasons for traveling. By the time I arrived at the Holiday Inn Express, I had been traveling for 19 hours.Read more

I talked to my baby this morning, but she fell asleep during our Facetime. 😝 I was awake at 4 AM, so I just got ready for the day. I attended the HS faculty meeting at 9:45 via Zoom and then jumped on the shuttle to the airport. Made it through security with no trouble, and after finding my gate (they switched it on me!), here I sit, waiting for another hour to board. Gonna eat an overpriced sandwich and read a book.Read more
