  • Day 2 - Zurich to Berlin

    27 września 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After a nice flight from TO we arrived at 6:15 am local time in Zurich. We had less than an hour to make our way to our connecting flight by 7:00 am.
Tried to sleep but even the sleepy Gravol didn’t drown out the couple of crying babies.😩 But a great cup of coffee ☕️ and piece of Swiss chocolate 🍫 makes anything tolerable. Next stop Berlin where we get to try the train. Czytaj więcej

  • Day 2 - Part 2 - Berlin Arrival

    27 września 2024, Niemcy ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

A short flight from Zurich and we arrived in Berlin.
We then took a bit of time up and down stairs with rolling luggage trying to catch our train into Alexanderplatz.
Eventually we arrived on the correct platform to get the direct train to our hotel.
So pleased that traveling with the group, I run the globe, we were able to check in to our room promptly before 11 AM!
We are now on our way to find coffee ☕️.

  • Day 3 - Saturday in Berlin

    28 września 2024, Niemcy ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

After we each slept about 10 hours we think we are rested. I did a very short run from the hotel to make sure my legs were going to be ready for tomorrow.
We walked to the start / finish line of the marathon. The 5 km shake out race was taking place which was fun to see how many runners were participating.
We found the participant entrance point for tomorrow morning and the area where I will hopefully find Bob after I finish.
We then took the subway back to the hotel and found another nice coffee shop.
Weather is cool but the sun is shining. The winds are starting to ease. Hopefully tomorrow they will be less but it’s going to be chilly at the start. No rain forecasted which is great.
There are over 58,000 runners tomorrow. I am in H corral which means I should be going off at 10 am. I bought a throw away fleece to donate at the race start so I don’t freeze during the 90 minutes I am waiting for my start. Berlin marathon has an App if anyone wants to track me. I am race #77273. Bob is going to be able to take transit around the city and spot me hopefully during the day. Thanks for all the well wishes.
It is now 5:30 pm, dinner is done, gear is ready. Marathon #63 here I come.

  • Day 4 - Berlin Marathon

    29 września 2024, Niemcy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Today was the Berlin marathon. Cathie and 58,000 other runners traveled 42.2 km around the city.
Weather was cool at the start but the sun was shining and eventually it hit about 14 C. Less windy than the past two days.
Bob was a great supporter. He got me to the start and then took my warm clothes for later.
I had bought a throw away hoodie that I would donate at the start line.
Race was so crowded the entire time. I have never run a race that big before.
My time was slower than I had hoped, 4:49:27, but I was injured the last three weeks so just thankful I was able to run.
We celebrated with German beer and schnitzel afterwards.
Now we are packing and getting ready to head to the airport at 4:30 am for our morning flight to Zurich.
We then catch three trains to Wegan where we meet up with our friends Janet & Gary and Sharon & Steve for a week of hiking. 🥾
Between Bob’s knee and my sore legs we are going to be quite the couple.
Thanks for following along on my race today.

  • Day 5 - Berlin to Wegan, Switzerland

    30 września 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Our 7:10 AM flight out of Berlin was full of many folks walking stiffly after yesterday’s marathon. Including me. 😉
We arrived in Zurich to catch our train towards Wegan.
    Starbucks breakfast cost $35.70 Canadian!
We boarded the train at 10:45 and away at 10:47. Swiss organized.

We were able to connect with our travel friends during our train trip. We had three trains in total including a funicular train which went up into Wegan.

We found our apartment we are staying in - up hill - and organized. We then all walked down to the grocery store for supplies.

Beautiful here for sure. Pictures won’t do it justice.

We all decided that we would cook and eat in as we have all been eating in restaurants the last few nights.

We are planning our hikes for the coming days.

  • Day 6 - Switzerland - hike # 1

    1 października 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ 🌫 10 °C

First hike for the group today. We took the train out of Wengen into Lauterbrunnen and then hiked on a very civilized paved pathway to Trümmelbach Falls where a cog train took us up to steps that we walked up to see six waterfalls. This was a very steep climb, but steps helped. The steps down were tough on Bob and my marathon legs, but we did it back to the cog train. The others had stronger legs, so they took the stairs back down.
Weather was okay even with the rain. We found a coffee shop and stopped for a bit to decide our next plan. Decided to walk back to Wengen - one hour and 30 minutes up hill. Why not? Lots of switchbacks but still beautiful scenery. Arrived in Wengen and of course more grocery shopping was necessary. We then walked back to the apartment and have settled in for the day. The rain is now heavier, so we got the best part of the day.
Dinner tonight was our own creation of fondue.

  • Day 7 - Switzerland - hike #2

    2 października 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Today we woke to rain, but it did clear about 8 AM. We decided that we wanted to do the cable car hiking day. We had hoped the weather would clear by the time we got to the mountains, but we weren’t that lucky. We had sometimes when it cleared but we still made the best of it. The temperature was much cooler today, but no rain.
We started from Wegen and took the first cable car to Mannlichen 2230 M. From there we did the Royal Walk which was up hill and from time to time we could see the peaks of the mountains.
The next ride on the cable car went to Grindelwald First where we took a bus into Grindelwald. The cable car traveled over beautiful fields with chalets, cows, goats and alpacas. For sure a skier’s paradise. When we got to the top there were two hikes, we were planning on doing. The fog was still heavy, so we decided to do the 50-minute walk to Bachalpsee Lake. Sadly, that was more like 90 minutes for us, but it was nice to finally get there where we had our lunch. Fog was still there, and it was getting colder.
We walked back and then attempted the First Cliff Walk. The fog was even worse. Bob sat this one out but the rest of us tried to get through the tourists to see what we could see. Not much, but it was a really cool walk along the cliff. On a clear day it would have been even busier with tourists.
We headed back into Grindelwald and found a coffee shop then headed back to the Wegen via the same cable cars we came up on. A very long day. We traveled over 25 KM by walking and cable cars.
We stopped again at the Coop on the way back to the apartment and picked up pizzas for dinner. It was another great day in Switzerland.

  • Day 8 - Switzerland - hike #3

    3 października 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Today we walked to the train station in Wengen and went to Lauterbrunnen. From there we took the cable car to Grutschalp where we walked to Murren on a flat trail through farm fields and along the railway line. The weather was cool, rainy and unfortunately still rather foggy. From there we continued on another trail that was supposed to be fairly flat. We were headed to Allmendhubel. It was supposed to be a fairly flat trail, but it wasn’t. It was uphill through cow pasture and shale rock. Extremely challenging for Bob’s knee. Sadly, he even managed to break his hiking pole along the way, but Sharon found him a stick. When we arrived at Allmendhubel we were able to get a coffee and some snacks. It was also a nice warm place for us to sit and dry out a bit. From there we took the cable car back down to Murren and then the train back to Lauterbrunnen. We were going to take the train back to Wengen but decided why not walk back like we did before. It was only one and a half hours so why not. Sharon and Steve went ahead as they walked faster. They were stopping at the Coop for supplies again before going to the apartment. Janet and Gary decided to walk with us even though we were going to be going slowly. While on the trail (which remember we did before and we knew where we were going), we met some local older gentlemen who pointed a direction and said it was easier. We looked at the trail and it was flatter, so we thought why not. Well after about 15 minutes the trail changed – it was known as the ‘hard’ trail, and it went straight up over logs and rocks and very slippery and muddy conditions. We carried on, found more walking sticks for Janet, Bob and me. We were not happy, but we kept going up. We saw an option that we thought would get us onto the train tracks so we could catch the train, but we were not in the right spot. The train conductor was not impressed and waved his hands at us in a very negative tone. We then went back on the hard trail and continued going up over bad trails. We came across an alternate trail, but it was through a farmer’s field with electric fences. We scrambled along and FINALLY found a road with a marked trail pointing in the correct direction. We were about 1 KM from the apartment – of course directly uphill. We finally arrived and boy where we tired.
Tonight, we decided to try a local restaurant, The Taverne Restaurant, we all tried some traditional dishes and did lots of sharing. Was a wonderful meal with great service.

  • Day 9 - Switzerland hike #4

    4 października 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Today the plan was to take the train in the opposite direction from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg which was at 2,061 M. As we were travelling by train, Bob and I realized that the snow on the ground would not be good for him walking. We didn’t want to spoil the fun of the others, so said we would take the train back down and repeat some of the hike we did on Tuesday from Lauterbrunnen.
Janet and Gary decided to join us, so Sharon and Steve went on their way. They had a great hike, but it was a smart decision for us as it would have been too slippery for Bob.
The trip to Lauterbrunnen by train was nice, we then walked towards the Trummelbachfalle Falls and then continued from there to Schilthorn. We had our lunch while walking and the weather was wet, but not as cold as up the mountain for sure. We turned around in Schilthorn and walked back to Lauterbrunnen for another visit to Flavours Coffee shop. We enjoyed a treat there and then took the train back to Wengen, opting not to do a repeat of yesterday’s hike, nor the one we did on Tuesday. We met up with Sharon and Steve at the Coop for more dinner supplies and things for our final morning in Wengen. Sharon, Steve and Gary did a hike from the Coop and Janet, Bob and I carried the groceries back to the apartment.
This was a nice day and a good chance for Bob to give his knee a bit of a break. The weather was damp and cool, but manageable. I dug out an extra layer today which I hadn’t really thought I would need when I packed, but sure glad I had the option. We are leaving Switzerland tomorrow evening for Split, Croatia. We will be spending a couple of nights in Split before meeting up with the Bike Tour group on Monday morning.
Tonight, we had another dinner in which was a great meal. We are making our plans for our departure in the morning. It will be a busy day of travel. Trains and planes.

  • Day 10 - Switzerland to Split, Croatia

    5 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Today we move onto Split, Croatia. We got a later check out to noon as we don’t fly from Zurich until 6:30 PM.
The morning was cool – 1 C but there was no rain. Bob and I elected to go for an early morning stroll from the apartment while the other four did a proper hike. We headed out ahead and were able to capture some nice pictures of the mountains as the clouds moved away. Lots of farms and cows grazing. We followed a road that led to a short trail the opposite end of Wengen and then back.

We left the apartment after 11 AM and walked downhill with our luggage and caught our first of five trains towards Zurich airport. Took over three hours, and lots of quick moving between tracks. It went well but at times a bit stressful. We got to the airport and then had to walk quite a while to find where we could get our bags checked. Then through security and we were finally rid of the big rolling luggage.
We found a Marche, and all got some dinner. The plane was a turbo prop, and we had to take a bus to the plane. It wasn’t that full, and we boarded very quickly and away.
An uneventful trip arrived, and all our bags were there. Sharon ordered an Uber who took all of us and our bags which was very handy, so we didn’t have to split up. We were about 30 minutes from the airport. Arrived at the condo and found our way in. The place is nice but smaller than what we had in Wengen; however we are only here for two nights. It was after 8:30 when we got here, so rather tired and we are now figuring out how we are going to get our coffee and breakfast in the morning. Sharon has a walking tour booked for us so that is our adventure for tomorrow. After we find coffee and breakfast.

  • Day 11 - Split, Croatia

    6 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

This morning, we woke to the best weather so far. It was sunny and warm and getting warmer. We headed to a breakfast spot at the water and then took a walking tour of the city.
The city tour went through the palace. The palace was also used for the filming of Game of Thrones. Very interesting with lots of photo opportunities.
There was a fun run and walk for Breast Cancer which made the area very busy. So fun to watch everyone and lots of dancing and singing.
The other four did a 300 step walk up which meant we would have to walk down, so Bob and I did a walk on our own. We walked along seaside enjoying the sunshine.
Split is a port for many cruise ships. That meant there were so many tourists walking around. The tour guide did warn us about pick pocketers, so we were of course all being careful.
We don’t have a lot of time here, so made the most of it and saw as much as we could. Croatia is also known for the best coffee – combination of Turkish and Italian coffee. It is strong, but nice.
We found a local restaurant – Nevera Tavern and had some great local food. Was a lovely dinner.
Tomorrow we meet our tour operator with Vermont Bike Tours to start the biking portion of the journey.

  • Day 12 - Split to Brac Island

    7 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We made our way to the meeting point from our apartment with the rest of the bike tour group. Our bags were collected and taken to the ferry for transport to the island.
We had a group meeting before we all walked to the ferry for the transfer to our hotel on Brac Island. Our group contains 22 people. All but us six from the United States. Also of note, out of the 22 riders, our group of six and one other lady from Utah are riding road bikes, everyone else chose electric bikes. Should we be concerned? The VBT guides are local to Croatia and Slovenia.
The water was beautiful and the views stunning. Once on land we were taken in van to the hotel. Our rooms were ready with our luggage set outside the doors. We had a few hours on our own for lunch before we all met for a safety meeting and then bike fittings. We did a very short ride along the shoreline and up a hill to test the gears and become comfortable on the bikes. Was beautiful and so nice to see the sun.
We then returned the bikes where they were locked up for the night outside the hotel room. We then were given about an hour to get ready to meet for dinner. We were again put in the van and taken to a welcome cocktail reception in the village of Dol where we all got to sample grappa on the restaurant’s terrace, followed by a traditional Brac Island dinner. Bob had the octopus, and I had the meat which were both cooked in big pots with potatoes and vegetables. Lots of wine and all very enjoyable. A good opportunity to meet some of the others on our tour. We then got a bit of a tour of the castle which is the restaurant.
We had a really yummy dessert of cake with a sweet walnut mixture. Just a lovely evening, starting to get a bit cool, but still nice for October.

  • Day 13 – Cycle Skrip & Pucisca

    8 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

I decided it was time to see if I could run. I went out just after 6:15 AM – it was still dark, but I could follow part of the route we biked yesterday along the seaside. A beautiful morning and running was a nice way to see. We had breakfast at the hotel then met to discuss the days routes with our VBT guides.
Today’s bike ride was a challenging hill right at the beginning out of the hotel. We travelled only about 8 KM until we reached an old olive oil plant. We all got to taste grappa with olive oil. We were given a demonstration on how the olive oil was produced and then an opportunity for tasting the oils. Really a nice stop, maybe a bit too long though. We then got back on the bikes and traveled up and down lots more hills until we descended into Pucisca which is a seaside town. There we were able to grab some lunch on our own and then we had a visit to the stonecutter’s school. Brac’s stone has been used for the construction of some of the world’s most famous buildings, including Diocletian’s Palace in Split which we toured on Sunday on our walking tour. But it also was used in the White House in Washington, DC. The student’s attend this school as ‘high school’ for four years mastering this skill. It is also a regular high school, so they are ready to attend college or go to work.
The group was then heading back to the hotel which was a reverse of what we did to get to the location. After the stops Bob was too sore to continue, so we rode our bikes to the van and caught a ride back with one of the leaders.
Tonight, we had a Croatian lesson which helped us learn common terms that we might need out on the road. We then were divided into two groups of 11 and were treated to dinner at a local’s home. The dinner was delicious with so many courses. Such a wonderful way to get to know the culture in Croatia.

  • Day 14 – Vidova Gora to Milna

    9 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We had a bad storm overnight, but thankfully by the time we awoke it was done – the sea was calm, and the rain stopped. The ride leaders were still a bit worried about the roads, so they delayed our start by half an hour. We were treated to Vanja leading us in a stretching class by the Adriatic Sea. What could be better than starting our day this way.
After that we all got into the van and were transferred to the Vidov Agora which is 778 M above sea level and is known as the highest peak of Brac and of all Croatian Islands. We had an opportunity to walk around and take photos before getting onto the bikes for our descent.
We rode through a forest of black pine and through villages of Nerezischa and Lozisca. We then traveled down into the port of Milna which is known as the most beautiful marina on the island. We were treated to lunch there as a group.
The second ride of the day was from there, which meant UPHILL. Bob did well with the first part, but the idea of climbing after the long lunch break was going to be too challenging on his knee. I went with the others, and it was tough, but got a reward in Supetar with gelato.
After the gelato stop it was a short 10 KM back to the hotel and only one more tough little climb.
Tonight, we are on our own for dinner. We chose a very nice restaurant with great pizza with Janet, Gary, Sharon & Steve. Tomorrow is a travel day to the next island, so no biking tomorrow, just some walking tours.

  • Day 15 – Travel day to Island of Hvar

    10 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

This was a long travel day. We were picked up in the van at our hotel and then driven about an hour to Bol where we waited to get a speed boat that took the group to the Island of Hvar.
While waiting we walked around the Borak Beach area which is known as one of the nicest beaches in Croatia. They even have a topless beach.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t true beach weather for us, and it was very windy. In fact, VBT’s original plan was for us to all take a ferry across to Hvar, but the water was too rough for that so instead we were divided into groups of 11 and we travelled across in a speed boat.
We landed in Jelsa and spent time there waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. Due to the water conditions the six of us decided to wait until we were on the other side for something to eat. The boat crossing though wasn’t that bad at all. It was only about 20 minutes and was fun to zip across the sea.
Once everyone arrived, we got in another van and were driven to Hvar’s fortress and then walked down to the hotel.
This weekend the town is having the World Spartan championships. The place is getting set up for the events this weekend. It will be a busy time here for sure. Part of the fortress we were visiting earlier is part of the racecourse. Not sure how much of the events we will be around for, it will be fun if we can see some of them.
The hotel is lovely, very old and mid-evil feeling. We had time to relax before meeting at 6:30 for dinner. We all walked up and down the staircases to a local’s home where we had a lesson about his garden and then a cooking lesson before enjoying a wonderful grilled sword fish dinner with vegetables. Another great meal and evening.
    Tomorrow, we ride again.

  • Day 16 – Jelsa / Vrboska / Stari Grad

    11 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today we started with breakfast in the hotel and then met at 8:30 to walk to a shuttle. We were driven to Stari Grad where the bikes were all set up waiting for us. We started the ride, and it went very well. Better for Bob but still challenging. This was a loop ride through fields, quiet stone villages and the narrow harbour to Jelsa.

We then continued around the water and stopped at a small cove where some people took a swim at Mina Beach. Our group only stopped for a little time and then went on our way to return to the starting point in Stari Grad.

This was the end of the morning ride for us. Bob and I decided not to do the return trip to Hvar as we do the reverse tomorrow which will be the most challenging ride of the week.

While in Stari Grad we had time to go for lunch. Bob and I shared lunch while waiting for the shuttle to arrive and the rest of the group to finish their lunch. We travelled back to the hotel by private shuttle with one other person who didn't want to do the 2nd ride.

Once back, I went walking around. The Spartan 100 M preliminaries were taking place so there is lots of excitement in the area.

Tonight, we are all on our own for dinner – VBT have the night off from taking care of us. Our group of six found a really good restaurant not too far away from the hotel.

The town is so busy with people in town for the World Championship Spartan races. Tonight, we can hear from our room the opening ceremonies. They start at 6:30 AM tomorrow morning. Should be great to be around for some of it before we head out on our ride.

Tomorrow is our last ride. The weather is supposed to be beautiful again. We have been very lucky with weather so far since arriving in Croatia.

  • Day 17 – Hvar/Stari Grad/Soline Beach

    12 października 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today we biked from the hotel after breakfast. Our ride today was noted as the toughest climb but the reward at the top would be worth it. I agree, it was a long climb of 10 – 12 KM up but the slope wasn’t that bad. We had a beautiful day for this ride. In fact, the weather for the entire week has been wonderful. The only day of rain was during the night, and we had to just delay a start while the roads dried off slightly.
Today we were treated to beautiful views of mountains, olive gardens, stone walls and very old churches and cemeteries. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stari Grad Plain. We were told that the area hasn’t changed in the past 2,000 years.
When we reached the top of the climb there was a stand that they were selling cycling jerseys. This was a very popular stop for cyclists and of course, I couldn’t resist a lavender cycling jersey. We had a picture with all the ladies wearing these jerseys and then the few men who purchased Croatian jerseys.
From there we still had over 20 KM to travel down and some more ups until we reached the sea. We rode through seaside village of Vrboska where some stopped for coffee, but Bob and I continued so that he didn’t need to torture his knee anymore when he would restart after the rests.
Our ride ended at Soline Beach where the VBT ride leaders prepared a fantastic picnic of salads, local cheeses and meats, breads and sweets. It was a perfect day and the one day we really should have brought our bathing suits and towels to enjoy the sea.
We were then shuttled back to the hotel for the afternoon of wondering around and watching more of the Spartan races.
Tonight, we had a group dinner in the hotel. The meal was delicious, and it was nice to say goodbye to everyone. Our leaders will be leaving before we do in the morning, so a chance to say thank you to them as well.
Tomorrow, we have a short walk to the boat where we take a three-hour boat ride to Dubrovnik. Bob and I will say goodbye to not only the bike group but also to Janet, Gary, Sharon and Steve as we will be heading home on Monday morning.
Thank you for following along on our journey. We have never done a Bike Vermont Tour (VBT), but fairly sure it won’t be our last one. The tour was very well organized with lots of time to stop and travel at your own pace. They provided everyone with Ride with GPS, so the routes were there for you to follow and we never got lost!
