  • Pompeii and Wine Tasting

    10 juni 2024, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we hopped on the train and took a guided tour through the ruins of Pompeii. We learned a lot about the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius (teehee) that covered the city. Highlights include the heated sauna room, the bakeries, and the water collection/distribution systems.

We took a drive from the ruins to the side of Vesuvius for a wine tasting. Unfortunately, the tasting wasn’t all that we had hoped for, but we still got to meet some cool people from Australia and Massachusetts!

We ended our night my stumbling upon an amazing seafood restaurant on the beachfront near our apartment. We were able to eat with the sounds of the waves enhancing the flavours of our fresh fish.

  • Capri Boat Tour

    11 juni 2024, Italië ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

For our last full day in the south of Italy, we took an early boat to the beautiful island of Capri. We decided to hike to a villa on the eastern tip of the island to escape the crowds and overpriced restaurants. What we found was a beautiful property with even more beautiful views! It was built be a French noblemen/opium addict who was exiled from civilization in the early 19th century.

After sharing a lemon sorbet served out of a lemon (!) we got back on the boat for a tour around the island. Our captain showed us all the cool sea caves, rock formations, and the very expensive airbnbs (€30k per night!)

Our night ended with wine watching our last italian sunset. ❤️

  • To Geneva!

    13 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After one quick night in Naples for our early morning flight, we arrived in Geneva and did a bit of touristing around before took another train to Le Landeron to meet the Perrot family. We were immediately shocked at the difference between Italy and Switzerland. Everyone follows the rules of the road here! It’s so clean! Shocking how different the cultures and customs are between every place we’ve visited.Meer informatie

  • Maison Cailler

    14 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Did you know… chocolate was a gift to the Aztecs from the gods? It was Marie Antoinette’s last meal!? Swiss chocolate is different and considered more luxurious due to the amount of quality milk in it?Meer informatie

  • Gruyère

    14 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

One of Lauren's favorite places of her time in Switzerland. Gruyère has a certain magical quality about it that is hard to explain until you're there. Thomas got his first taste of authentic Swiss Fondue! 😍🫕Meer informatie

  • Day trip to Bern

    15 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The capital of Switzerland! Ophélie took us on a day trip. We got to visit the famous astrological clock, the underground cellar stores on the pedestrian roads, and the local bears named Björk, Finn and Ursina. They live in an enclosed area near the river.Meer informatie

  • 🚙➡️Thun

    16 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Ophélie lent us her car for a day trip into the mountains! 😍 The sun showed up for lovely weather all day. First stop was Thun. We drove on the west side of Lake Thunersee all the way down to Interlaken. We explored their old village, stopped for a coffee (naturally), and trekked up to the old château. Such beautiful views. Our original plan was to drive straight to Interlaken, but Paulette and Olivier advised us to make two stops prior for less touristy, and more beautiful in their opinion, towns.Meer informatie

  • 🚙➡️Spiez

    16 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Next stop, Spiez! Paulette told us this was her favourite place to visit for the view of these mountains and after visiting, Thomas and I would tend to agree! We spent some time sitting up by the château enjoying the clear and colourful views before venturing to a local park/canteen for lunch. We really appreciated the amount of locals of all ages out enjoying the sun and activities offered in the park. One of our favourite places to visit this trip!Meer informatie

  • 🚙➡️Interlaken

    16 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Last stop of the day! Boy were glad to have stopped in the other two towns. This one was more touristy than expected with the designer stores and Indian restaurants everywhere! Very surprising. At this point in the day, we were too tired to go up the cable car for the famous view. We appreciated it from below and wandered for a bit stumbling upon a watch party for a Euro game ⚽️ before heading back home.Meer informatie

  • Strasbourg

    18 juni 2024, Frankrijk ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

After a travel and rest day to Basel to meet up with Shafeeq and the girls, Thomas and I borrowed the car and drove up to Strasbourg. I find it so magical here! They have the biggest Christmas market in Europe here during the season, but I think the spirit is there all year (at least in the touristy area, haha!). Check out their church made during the gothic period. It was the tallest building in the world from 1647-1874!! It’s the 6th tallest church in the world now and the highest still standing from the Middle Ages. Impressive!

We ate tarte flambée and I tried the region’s Crémant sparkling wine. Yum yum!

  • Oeschinen Lake Hike

    19 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Well we certainly got our butts handed to us! Such a scenic hike. It did seem to keep going up and up and up though… 6 hours later and we just made the last gondola to take us down the mountain. There were several streams to traverse which made the hike more challenging, but thank goodness for them on the very warm day!

Of course we had to stop for a beer amongst the cows and chickens.

  • Tour around Basel with Shafeeq

    20 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Thanks Shafeeq for being a great host and tour guide!! Old Basel was stunning and learning about “Big Basel” and “Little Basel” was a good history lesson. The working class used to live on the other side of the river in little Basel then go to big Basel to work/serve the upper class. There is still a feeling of superiority in big Basel today!

For a smaller city, there are plenty of festivals inviting the locals out to celebrate throughout the year! The Fall Festival sounds impressive.

You’ll see the Basilisks in the pictures, a mystical animal unique to Basel. It’s part snake, rooster, and dragon.

  • Joyeux anniversaire Ophélie !

    22 juni 2024, Zwitserland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Ophélie and her best friend rented a chalet for the evening to celebrate the 25th birthdays. It was quite an impressive set up! There was risotto for dinner and enough to drink for weeks… haha! Everyone came in a costume and some pulled out all the stops.

We went in the morning to help with the set up… hence Thomas with a beer at 11am!! Part of a healthy breakfast…

Lots of fun to see friends from many years ago. A great send off as we head to Paris to fly back home.

You’ll see Ophélie’s godparents singing her a song they wrote. The chorus was easy to catch and had the whole building joining in to sing about her falling asleep in cars and on travels. Good to see some things never change!! Such good laughs.
