    Cape Town Airport

    26. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

So here I am waiting for that long haul flight to Manchester via Istanbul. Don't like drinking on my own, but it's got to be done while waiting for your flight 😂
Caz is at this moment at me little house on Marton getting it all ready for my return. Bless her, she gives it a good vacuum and makes me bed. And she's just sent me a video which makes me very impatient to get backLue lisää

  • Farewell

    26. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Sadly, my time in beautiful Sedgefield has come to an end. When I went for my last walk on stunning Myoli Beach I felt quite emotional. I really feel Sedgefield is my home and feel especially close to Peter as we made so many special memories here.
However it will be fabulous to get back to my little home and I can't wait to see Caz and family again. And, of course, it will be so nice to catch up with my very special friends again.
Thank you for keeping in touch via this platform, although I think I will have to look for another App. I know a lot of people weren't able to connect to this one.
Until then, take care. Love you all ❣️

  • Wedding Anniversary

    21. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Yesterday, 20 April, would've been our 51st wedding anniversary had my lovely Peter still been here.
I am so very lucky to have such great friends who have always been here to make such difficult days more bearable for me.
Yesterday I spent the day with Irene and Jeanette, both widows. And what a coincidence, Jeanette was married on exactly the same day and same year and we both lost our husbands in 2021.
We visited nearby Heritage Bakery, a craft based Christian Community. It's lifestyle and culture stresses simplicity, self sufficiency, co- operation and quality craftmanship. The group here in Sedgefield currently have fellowships in America, Israel, New Zealand and Mexico.
Heritage Bakery is set amongst the trees and certainly there is a lovely ambience of peace and serenity.
We had a really tasty pizza for lunch. Everything is homemade and home-grown and you could even taste the freshness of the tomatoes used as a base.
After a lovely chilled lunch we went to Irene's where we spent the afternoon playing Rummikub over a few glasses of wine 🥂
What could've been a sad day turned out to be a great one spent with lovely ladies.

  • Atlantic Rail Trip

    20. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The last ten years have seen an exceptional decline in the rail infrastructure in SA. This company was established by 3 brothers who identified the need to afford locals and holidaymakers the opportunity to experience a nostalgic train journey of a bygone era. On their organised trips the carriages are sometimes pulled by a steam locomotive but on the day of our travel a diesel locomotive was employed.
Saskia and I embarked upon our trip at Hartenbos, on the coast, and travelled through some beautiful scenery to Albertinia, a distance of just under 60kms. Unfortunately, we had not booked our tickets in time to be able to travel in the dining carriage so had to travel "cattle class" 🤣
We were lucky to spot some elephants as we passed the Garden Route Game Reserve, as well as wildebeest and buck.
After a short stop at Albertinia to stretch our legs it was back on the train to Gourits River where we were met by staff from Bon Private Game Reserve who ferried us to their venue for a spot of lunch and live music.
We turned down the opportunity to purchase a game drive as we have both been spoilt by fabulous visits to Kruger Park and the fun of spotting animals in the wild. An organised trip to see the animals grazing at "set" spots just didn't appeal.
After our allotted time there it was time to return to the train and our journey back to Hartenbos.

  • Beautiful Brenton-on-Sea

    16. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Yesterday I went for a sushi lunch with Irene to beautiful Brenton, a quaint little seaside town situated between Sedgefield and Knysna. Perched high up overlooking Buffalo Bay is Butterfly Blu, a stunning restaurant with exquisite views.
This beautiful location holds such a lot of memories as Peter and I used to love coming here for our picnics.

  • Myoli Beach

    7. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I am so lucky to be staying so close to the sea. It is literally less than a 5 minute walk away and it can be so soothing to lie in bed at night listening to the waves, even when it sounds quite rough out there. I walk the beach nearly every day and it's beauty never ceases to amaze me.Lue lisää

  • Kambuca

    2. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Last night I had one of the best times at this stunning lodge. Kambuca is set high up overlooking the estuary and mountains. Ruth is very friendly with the owners and she so wanted to share the beauty with us that she arranged for us to go up for sundowners. We were all blown away by the sheer beauty. We were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived and Tristyn, the owner, put on the most amazing platter of snacks. To top it all, Mother Nature provided the most beautiful sunset.Lue lisää

  • Fun-Filled Evenings

    1. huhtikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

More pics of some of my evenings out. Every venue seems to have live music here in Sedgefield so we have a lot of choice. Some of the entertainment is very good but unfortunately some can be pretty dire. However, we still make the most of it and manage to get a bit of dancing in. One of our frequent haunts, Lake View Restaurant, even posted a video of us on the Sedgefield local social page proclaiming "always a fun night when these ladies are here" 🤪Lue lisää

  • Line Dancing

    29. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Just thought I would post a couple of photos of the views I have whilst at one of my line dancing classes. I go twice a week: once on a Wednesday late afternoon and the other Thursday morning. Two different teachers with completely different styles but both so enjoyable. I would be lost without my line dancing, such brilliant exercise and so good for the brain.Lue lisää

  • Coach Trip

    29. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Last Tuesday I went on an organised coach trip inland to Prince Albert in the Karoo. I go on quite a few coach trips in England but they are few and far between in SA so I was very excited when I found out about Nostalgia Tours who do organised trips here.
Me and friends Ria and Hennie were up very early on Tuesday to join a lovely set of people on the one mini bus of two to set off with our first stop being in De Rust for breakfast. This is a small village in the gateway to the Klein Karoo. The name is Dutch and literally translates to "The Rest" referring to the town's original purpose of being a resting place for settlers en route through the challenging pass of the Swartberg mountains. After a very tasty breakfast it was back on the bus to travel through the awesome rock features of Meiringspoort onto Prins Albert in the Karoo (a vast semi desert region). Here we visited a cheese farm where we learned about the art of cheese making and did some cheese tasting. After lunch at a quaint hotel in Prins Albert we travelled back to De Rust for a stop at an olive farm for olive oil tasting. Arrived back on my doorstep 12 hours later absolutely knackered but what a fun day.

  • A Poor Summer 😭

    21. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Unfortunately, this Summer in Sedgefield has been quite poor. We have had a lot of grey, overcast days and some days have been quite cool. Obviously, it's still been better than being back in England in winter but I have quite a few of my summer dresses that I've not got to wear this time round.
On Thursday evening this week I certainly felt I was back home. I had organised for us to get some takeaway pizzas from Pili Pili and take them, along with a couple of bottles of vino, to the lookout deck overlooking Myoli Beach. As you will see from the photos the evening was very misty. Then the wind got up and we began to feel decidedly chilly. When we saw lightening over the sea and ominous black clouds I suggested we pack up and take everything back to mine. It so reminded me of the many occasions where we've had to pack up our picnics in England quickly before the heavens opened.
Thankfully, we still had a fantastic evening with lots of fun and laughter and animated debates.

  • A Myriad of Outings

    15. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

It never ceases to amaze me that, even at my age, I'm lucky to be meeting new people that I know are going to become good friends.
With all these new friends, comes more outings and sometimes it feels like I'm out practically every day. But I've decided to just go with the flow and enjoy it all while I can. All the different groups have nicknamed me the social secretary and I've been enjoying organising all our different days and nights out.
So here's a myriad of photos depicting some of our "jols": South African for occasions of enjoyment.

  • Beautiful Sedgefield

    13. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

The scenic beauty of Sedgefield never ceases to amaze me.
It's such a pleasure to walk down into town and the other morning it was so nice to see that the rock I had painted a couple of months ago had been cemented in alongside the sidewalk by the lagoon. A couple of years ago a community-driven project was launched whereby locals and tourists could paint rocks and they would then be cemented in to form Rockie, the Rock Star, which is currently 252 metres long.Lue lisää

  • Fun Times

    1. maaliskuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I'm so enjoying my social life over here. I know some are getting a little anxious that I may be overspending, but those who know me well will know my thrifty ways 🤣 I am still able to live within my weekly budget as, on the whole, we only go to restaurants where they have special deals. And the portion size is usually so big that I bring any leftovers home and that's my meal for another day 👏
The entertainment is always free so it never costs anything to have a good bop 💃

  • Busy Bee 🐝

    23. helmikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

This week has been an exceptionally busy social week but I've loved every minute.
On Monday I met up with a friend for brunch. Annie was up visiting Sedgefield from Gordon's Bay so it was lovely to catch up with her.
On Tuesday a group of us went for Pensioner's Lunch at Oysters Edge. When we first moved to Sedgefield in 2010 I went to a linedancing class and we used to meet up afterwards for a coffee and chat. Even though the class disbanded many years ago, the ladies still meet on a monthly basis for a catch up. This month we opted for a Specials lunch. I had chunks of fish goujons, chips and veg, dessert of ice-cream and chocolate sauce and a glass of wine all for the amazing price of £5!
On Wednesday evening it was back fo Lakeview Restaurant for the monthly game of Music Bingo. Once again, it was such a fun evening with lots of singing and laughter.
On Thursday it was my weekly linedancing session followed by coffee with some of the ladies.
On Friday I had the best fish and chips at my favourite Mr Kaai. When we lived in Sedgefield we met a couple while we were walking here on Myoli Beach. Zosia and Marek were from Poland and had lived and worked in SA for many years, finally ending up here in Sedgefield. Around the same time we moved back to UK they returned to Poland, but kept their house here so they could return on a yearly basis. They are now here for a 2 month holiday so it's going to be great to see more of them.
Saturday morning the 3 of us went to the Market for oysters. And then in the evening I met up with Ruth, Dianne, Roger and Marietta for a great night of live music and dancing.

  • My Walk into Town

    14. helmikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

My apartment is about a 40 minute walk from town and on a nice fresh sunny morning it's so lovely to take a stroll into Sedgefield. I am lucky that there's an alternative route that I can take downhill, but unfortunately coming back both walks involve a steep hill somewhere along the way.
This morning I left at 7.30 so it was still nice and cool and luckily there was shade on the hill coming back. As a reward I treated myself to a "99" from the little shop by my apartment.

Today we relived our childhoods at this fabulous place which lies at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. This idyllic farmstead and commercial strawberry grower offers so much entertainment, such as picking your own strawberries, exploring the largest permanent hedge growing maze in the Southern Hemisphere, climbing the giant strawberry, miniature train ride, pedal go karts, pony rides plus bumper boats and bubble balls on the dam. There's also a fabulous deli, a shop selling handcrafted icecreams, three different eating venues, a wine and whisky tasting venue plus a lifestyle boutique selling products sourced locally. • Dancing and Singing with Shaza

    4. helmikuuta, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Friends here and those who follow my blogs know that I love Shaza. She is a pure entertainer and a great singer with songs from different genres and even sings a mean aria from various operas. And I just love it when she plays the bongos.
So even though I had had a hectic fortnight with Jo and Wayne going out every day I just had to go and see Shaza as soon as I flew back to Sedgefield.
She was playing at the Knysna Friday Market which is a great outdoor venue with loads of food stalls providing food from many different countries.
As soon as Shaza started to sing we were up dancing and didn't sit down all night. I even ended up dancing on the tables. Thank goodness by then it was dark so that may have gone unnoticed 🤣
