    Unser vorletzter Stop in den USA. Irgendwie haben wir vergessen diesen zu posten. Dort gab es neben der besten Weihnachtslichter-Show auch Delfine im Wasser zu bestaunen. Außerdem hatten wir einen Falken, der auf unseren Campingplatz aufgepasst hat.

    Fiesta de Virgen de Guadalupe 1

    Unsere ersten und sehr bewegenden Eindrücke von Mexiko waren eine große Fiesta in Puerto Vallarta. Wir kamen Mittags an und gegen Nachmittag ging auf einmal eine großer Festzug los. Wie sich herausstellen sollte, ging dieser auch mehr oder weniger die ganze Nacht und auch noch die nächsten 2 Tage weiter. Hintergrund des Festes ist eine Marienerscheinung aus dem 16Jhd. In dem Stadtviertel Guadeloupe, Mexiko Stadt, erschien einem indigenen Bauern anscheinend mehrere Male die heilige Jungfrau. Diese Legende führte dazu, dass innerhalb weniger Jahre mehrere Millionen Menschen der indigenen Bevölkerung zum Christentum konvertierten und dies zur Staatsreligion wurde. Daher ist dieses Fest nicht nur von religiöser, sondern auch von patriotischer Bedeutung für die mexikanische Nation und die Maria von Guadalupe Schutzpatronin Mexikos.

    Our first and very moving impressions of Mexico were a big fiesta in Puerto Vallarta. We arrived at noon and in the afternoon a big parade started. As it turned out, this also went on more or less the whole night and also the next 2 days. The background of the festival is an apparition of the Virgin Mary from the 16th century. In the district of Guadeloupe, Mexico City, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous farmer apparently several times. This legend led to the conversion of several million people of the indigenous population to Christianity within a few years and this became the state religion. Therefore, this feast is not only of religious but also of patriotic importance for the Mexican nation and Mary of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico.    Leggi altro

    Wie gesagt, ging die Party für uns ganze 3 Tage. In Puerto Vallarta feiern sie aber anscheinend 12 Tage, wobei der 12.12. der Haupttag und Abschluss dieses Feiermarathons ist.

    Wir waren insgesamt eine Woche in der zweitgrößten Stadt Mexikos. Trotz viel Verkehrs und ständigem Lärm konnten wir dieser Metropole einiges abgewinnen. Tolle Kunstwerke von Orozco, Lucha libre, nette Bars, leckeres Essen, überall Musik und ein tolles Hostel mit dem wir mehrere Ausflüge gemacht haben.

    We were in Mexico's second largest city for a total of one week. Despite a lot of traffic and constant noise, we were able to get a lot out of this metropolis. Great artwork by Orozco, lucha libre, nice bars, delicious food, music everywhere and a great hostel that took us on a few tours.    Leggi altro

    We joined the Guadalajara frisbee team for a game, and then were generously invited to their Christmas party. There was a bonfire, tequila, and Constance got to have a go at a piñata!

    On the edge of Guadalajara, there's a beautiful canyon where one can hike down to the river and enjoy the (comparative) peace and quiet. Exhausting but worth it!

    Nacho Libre y el Ninja Arcoiris

    What an incredible night. We enjoyed one of Mexico's favourite national pasttimes: Lucha Libre. The fights were spectacular but the real star is the audience. There was singing, screaming, booing, but mostly also insulting one another (but with big smiles on everybody's face). This was probably because everybody doesn't take it to seriously and we're just there to have a good time.

    Was für ein unglaublicher Abend. Wir haben eine der beliebtesten mexikanischen Freizeitbeschäftigungen genossen: Lucha Libre. Die Kämpfe waren spektakulär, aber der eigentliche Star war das Publikum. Es wurde gesungen, geschrien, gebuht, aber meistens sich gegenseitig beleidigt (aber mit einem breiten Lächeln auf dem Gesicht). Das lag wahrscheinlich daran, dass alle das Ganze nicht so ernst nehmen und einfach nur da sind, um sich zu amüsieren.

    We spent a day exploring Tlaquepaque, a beautiful neighbourhood of Guadalajara full of art and beautiful architecture. Many silly photos were taken - it was a fun day trip.

    We stopped by Toluca with hopes of climbing the mountain nearby, bit snow at high altitude closed the roads. The town still had some nice surprises for us, though, like the world's only Axolotlarium.

    Wir haben Silvester in dem wunderschönen Örtchen Malinalco verbracht. Schon die Fahrt dorthin, mit collectivo (großes Sammeltaxi) inklusive Kaninchen auf Gregors Schoß, war eine tolle Erfahrung. Und der Ort an sich, mit seinen kleinen Gassen, großem Charme, umgeben von grünen Bergen, mit einem wunderschönen Markt, Forellenviertel, leckerem Silvester Dinner, interessanten Ruinen... hat uns ziemlich verzaubert.

    We spent New Year's Eve in the beautiful village of Malinalco. Already the ride there, with collectivo (big shared cab) including rabbit on Gregor's lap, was a great experience. And the place itself, with its small streets, great charm, surrounded by green mountains, with a beautiful market, trout quarter, delicious New Year's Eve dinner, interesting ruins.... pretty much enchanted us.     Cuauhtinchan Archeological Zone

    Die Region um Malinalco würde früher von den Matlatzinca beherrscht, die 1476 von den Azteken erobert wurden. Diese nutzten die schon vorhandene Zeremoniestätte und erbauten dort eine große Tempelanlage. Hauptgebäude ist das Cuauhcalli, Haus der Adler, und wird durch seine monolithische Bauweise beispielsweise mit Petra in Jordanien verglichen. Die Azteken nutzten Steinwerkzeuge um den Fels zu bearbeiten und bemalten danach die Wände. An dem Ort wurden anscheinend Kriegszeremonien zelebriert. So mussten gefangene Krieger anderer Stämme hier gegen besser bewaffnete Azteken kämpfen, um ehrenvoll im Kampf zu sterben.

    The region around Malinalco would have been dominated in the past by the Matlatzinca, who were conquered by the Aztecs in 1476. The latter used the already existing ceremonial site and built a large temple complex there. The main building is the Cuauhcalli, House of Eagles, and its monolithic construction is compared, for example, with Petra in Jordan. The Aztecs used stone tools to carve the rock and then painted the walls. Apparently, war ceremonies were celebrated at the site. Thus, captured warriors of other tribes had to fight here against better armed Aztecs to die honorably in battle.    Leggi altro

    Mexico City

    We spent about two weeks in Mexico City - our longest travel break so far! Although we didn't take so many photos, we had a great time brushing up Spanish in a short course, exploring different neighbourhoods, visiting the spectacular Museum of Anthropology, playing frisbee and of course eating a lot of delicious and exotic food. We both really enjoyed the city and its diversity - everything from quiet, tree-lined streets with board game cafes to chaotic markets and jazz clubs. And the exploration was made all the easier by some of the best, most efficient public transport we've ever seen. Who knew?

    Wir haben etwa zwei Wochen in Mexiko-Stadt verbracht - unsere bisher längste Reisepause! Obwohl wir nicht so viele Fotos gemacht haben, hatten wir eine tolle Zeit, in der wir in einem Kurzkurs unser Spanisch auffrischten, verschiedene Viertel erkundeten, das spektakuläre Museum für Anthropologie besuchten, Frisbee spielten und natürlich jede Menge leckeres und exotisches Essen aßen. Wir haben beide die Stadt und ihre Vielfalt sehr genossen - von ruhigen, von Bäumen gesäumten Straßen mit Brettspiel-Cafés bis hin zu chaotischen Märkten und Jazzclubs. Und die Erkundung wurde durch einige der besten und effizientesten öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel, die wir je gesehen haben, noch einfacher. Wer hätte das gedacht?    Leggi altro

    Teotihuacán

    Schöner und interessanter Ausflug zur einst wichtigsten Stadt Mesoamerikas. Zwischen 100-650 n. Chr. war Teotihuacan nicht nur wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum sondern auch mit bis zu 200 000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt des Kontinents. Heute lassen die Ruinen der verschiedenen Tempel und v.a. die beiden großen Pyramiden den Glanz und Ruhm dieser frühen Hochkultur erahnen. Um 750 wurde die Stadt verlassen und die Azteken fanden diese erst Jahrhunderte später als magische Ruinenstätte vor und gaben ihr den heutigen Namen. Da die Teotihuacan keine Schrift hatten können Erkenntnisse über Zusammenleben nur durch archäologische Funde gesammelt werden. Die Wandmalereien (hier aus dem Palacio de Tepantila) zeigen z.B. neben mythologischen Entstehungsszenarien, Fußballspiel und Mathematiker die mit Hilfe von Murmeln rechnen.

    Beautiful and interesting excursion to the once most important city of Mesoamerica. Between 100-650 AD Teotihuacan was not only an economic and cultural center but also the largest city on the continent with up to 200,000 inhabitants. Today, the ruins of the various temples and especially the two great pyramids give an idea of the splendor and glory of this early advanced civilization. Around 750 the city was abandoned and the Aztecs found it centuries later as a magical ruin site and gave it its present name. Since the Teotihuacan had no writing, knowledge about coexistence can only be gathered through archaeological findings. The wall paintings (here from the Palacio de Tepantila) show e.g. beside mythological origin scenarios, soccer game and mathematicians calculating with the help of marbles.    Leggi altro

    Wir haben eine wunderschöne und anstrengende Besteigung des dritthöchsten Berg Mexikos geschafft, dem Iztaccíhuatl (5230m).
    Mit insgesamt 3 Guides und einem weiteren Mitstreiter machten wir uns morgens gegen 2 Uhr auf dem Weg, um die "schlafende Frau" zu bezwingen. Leider mussten wir relativ früh die Gruppe trennen, da der andere Bergsteiger mit Bauchproblemen zu kämpfen hatte. So war unserer Gruppe auf einmal auf 4 Personen geschrumpft. Bis zum Sonnenaufgang hatten wir es etwas über die Schutzhütte geschafft und pünktlich zu den ersten Sonnenstrahlen zeigte der Popocatépetl, warum er zu den aktivsten Vulkanen gehört und blies eine riesige Rauchwolke hinaus. Immer weiter näherten wir uns dem ersten Gipfel um dort dann den zweiten Guide mit teilen unserer Ausrüstung zurückzulassen. Dort mussten wir dann auch die Steigeisen anziehen, um den kleinen Gletscher zu überqueren. 2 Gipfel später und nach insgesamt 8 Stunden hatten wir dann endlich den Cumbre erreicht. Überglücklich machten wir schnell ein paar Fotos, um uns dann auf den Rückweg zu machen. Nach weiteren 5 Stunden und einer etwas längeren Pause in der Hütte waren wir endlich wieder an unserem Basecamp angekommen. Wir mussten noch schnell unser Zelt zusammenpacken, bevor es dann endlich auf die Rückfahrt ging und zumindest Gregor sofort eingeschlafen ist.

    We made a beautiful and exhausting ascent of the third highest mountain in Mexico, the Iztaccíhuatl (5230m).
    With a total of 3 guides and one other fellow climber, we set off in the morning around 2am to conquer the "sleeping woman". Unfortunately, we had to separate the group relatively early, because the other climber was struggling with stomach problems. So our group was suddenly shrunk to 4 people. By sunrise we had made it a little above the refuge and just in time for the first rays of sunlight, Popocatépetl showed why it is one of the most active volcanoes and blew out a huge cloud of smoke. Further and further we approached the first summit to leave there the second guide with parts of our equipment. There we had to put on the crampons to cross the small glacier. 2 summits later and after a total of 8 hours we had finally reached the Cumbre. Overjoyed, we quickly took a few photos and then headed back. After another 5 hours and a slightly longer break in the hut, we finally arrived back at our base camp. We still had to quickly pack up our tent before it finally went on the return trip and at least Gregor immediately fell asleep.    Leggi altro

    Oaxaca

    We had heard nothing but good things about Oaxaca before we arrived, and all of the rumours turned out to be true. It was a beautiful place! The entire old town seemed to be covered with street art, and around every corner you could find merchants selling traditional textiles and delicious food - notably mole and chocolate. Despite the dazzled tourists, the city's residents were warm and friendly and we felt very welcome indeed. It was hard to leave.

    Wir hatten nur Gutes über Oaxaca gehört, bevor wir ankamen, und alle Gerüchte erwiesen sich als wahr. Es war ein wunderschöner Ort! Die gesamte Altstadt schien mit Straßenkunst bedeckt zu sein, und an jeder Ecke konnte man Händler finden, die traditionelle Textilien und köstliches Essen - vor allem Mole und Schokolade - verkauften. Trotz der geblendeten Touristen waren die Bewohner der Stadt warmherzig und freundlich, und wir fühlten uns wirklich sehr willkommen. Die Abreise fiel uns schwer.    Leggi altro

    Viel Leben und interessante Leute auf den Straßen in Oaxaca. Die meisten Bilder sind an diesem Nachmittag rund um den zócalo entstanden. Die meistenn Personen hab ich gefragt, ob ich ein Bild machen kann. So kommt man manchmal ins Gespräch und lernt die Leute besser kennen.

    Lots of life and interesting people on the streets in Oaxaca. Most of the pictures were taken this afternoon around the zócalo. Most of the people I asked if I could take a picture. That's how you sometimes get into conversation and get to know people better.    Leggi altro
