    Ready to go

    July 7, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

It was December 2022 when Mum and Dad decided to let Leah and Toby know about our planned trip to the UK and Europe (God willing) as they decided it was too hard to start planning without letting the proverbial cat out of the bag!

Mum devised a riddle with clues that needed to be solved. After much detective work and excitement, the riddle was solved!

Dad then spent hours mulling over flight combinations and options and finally a decision was made that we would fly into London and out of Rome, with a few days in Singapore. Then the big question was, how would we get from London to Rome and which way would we go?

Eventually we settled on a train trip that went from London to Paris to Germany to Switzerland and then down to Italy.

  • Whitchurch CF141DS

    July 8, 2023 in Wales ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Our first day in Wales was very Welsh. We thought we had left Australia to escape the rain!?

Tim kindly drove over to London to pick us up from the airport and drove us back to Cardiff.

Tim and Mel organised a train trip into a food festival, including a visit to a shop that makes fresh welsh cakes. A great way to try and ward off the inevitable jetlag.Read more

A somewhat overcast day weather wise, but a really interesting visit to St Fagan's to get a better understanding of the history of life in Wales.

  • Road Trip to Ross on Wye

    July 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We left Cardiff and headed northeast through Gloucestershire up to Ross on Wye where we came across our first dilemma...what do you do when you are in need of a toilet break, and you need the exact change to access the public loo...no tap the card option here!!

Fortunately, we had change on us as you needed to insert a 20p coin to access the public amenities. Very fortunately we had two 20p coins!!

  • Bourton-on-the-Water

    July 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Well probably Bourton-in-the-Water would be a better description!

A very cute part of England but we got soaked!!

After looking at the model village and then going through the real thing, we headed off and turned down a narrow lane and came to the village of Fifield. England at its best!! Off the beaten tourist track.Read more

  • The World of Harry Potter (Part 1 )

    July 12, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

With two devotees in the family, plus other members who like reading Harry Potter, this was a highly anticipated day.

Harry Potter World is more about seeing the effects and methods that were used in bringing the books to life via film so that us mere muggles (humans) can better appreciate the world of magic.Read more

  • Acommodation in Buckinghamshire

    July 12, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This is our accommodation in Buckinghamshire.

The ceiling height is between 5'10 and 6'1 unless you are going through a doorway where you need to duck as the floor in the next room is often not level with where you have come from.

The stairs are definitely not OHS compliant and the floor creaks and slopes.

But it is a really beautiful location and all the reasons above are exactly why we booked it.

  • Rhossili Bay Beach and Swansea

    July 15, 2023 in Wales ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Our travels have taken us west to Swansea where catching up with friends (Andy & Jo Blackhall and family in particular) has more than compensated for the somewhat inclement Welsh weather, but not so inclement that we weren't able to visit JOE's ice cream parlour.

A visit to this part of the world must include Rhossilli Bay even if its blowing a gale!!

However none of this would happen without first having a good game of Ticket to Ride with Dan and Rhiannon Pearce followed by a visit from David and Lynda Nicholls.

  • Warwick Castle

    July 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Warwick Castle is a medieval castle in Warwick, England, founded by William the Conqueror in 1068. The original wooden motte-and-bailey castle was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century by the de Beaumont family, the castle’s constables who became the earls of Warwick. During the Hundred Years War, the facade opposite the town was refortified, resulting in one of the most recognisable examples of 14th-century military architecture. The de Beaumont line died out in 1449, and the castle passed between different owners during the 15th-century Wars of the Roses.

Despite falling into decreasing disrepair, the castle was used as a stronghold until the early 17th century, when it was granted to Sir Fulke Greville by James I in 1604. Greville converted it to a country house. The castle was held by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War and was unsuccessfully besieged by the Royalists in 1642. The Grevilles redeveloped the property during the 18th century, landscaping the grounds and developing more Gothic features; they were made the Earls of Warwick in 1759. Further work followed in the 19th century, including by the architect Anthony Salvin.

  • Glamping - Warwick Castle

    July 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We stayed in the Knight's Village at Warwick Castle for the night. In hindsight, it would've been better to have stayed the night before you go to the castle as you really need to be there at 10am to be able to see everything.

Our accommodation was a 'tent' but with all the mod-cons. Dinner was served in the banquet hall. We chose the 'small' portion so we could have desert, but it proved that our appetite was nowhere near what knights could fit in!!

After dinner we walked into Warwick and then came back and joined the evening activities including archery, learning the art of sword fighting and watching a showdown between two knights.

  • Up to London

    July 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We drove from Warwick up to Heathrow Airport and returned our car. Avis @ Heathrow is the ultimate plane spotting venue ... smack bang across the road from the runway.

From there we took the tube into London and then set out to explore.

After putting our luggage in storage at Victoria Station, we then went to find Buckingham Palace and surrounds. We didn't make it very far as there is so much to see and it was all so new. So, it was then back to Victoria to collect our luggage and off to find our apartment in Oxford Street and then off to explore the neighborhood.
