  • Crossing the Apennines

    September 29, 2016 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After a little hesitation about heading into the mountains we found one of the quietest and most spectacular roads of our journey. Not only was the road up a nice constant gradient, but the new dual carriageway half a mile away meant no one was on it. We then had 25 miles of blissful and mostly uninterrupted downhill!! A brief inner tube change was all that we paused for. (And a caprese salad for lunch!) One of the best days yet.Read more

  • Goodbye Italy

    September 30, 2016 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After 1 month, 800 miles, 45 pizzas, 65 bowls of pasta, 30 caprese salads and a spectacular wedding we say goodbye to Italy......and hello to a luxurious (in comparison to the last three!) cabin on our ferry to our next destination.Read more

  • Croatia - Stobreč

    October 1, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Our initial plan was to head south down the coastal road from Split. We made it as far as a lovely campsite in Stobreč before realising the coastal road was in fact an uninviting looking dual carriage way with no hard shoulder and lots of mean looking lorries... So a quick change of plan and back to Split we go for some island hopping instead!Read more

  • Split

    October 2, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After an exciting journey into Split with some storms and flash flooding, we managed to find a lovely little apartment right in the centre of town and even squeezed the bike up the stairs too!
I had my first ever Hugo cocktail, my new favourite and dangerously cheap! Beautiful old town and amazing sunset, deceptively tasty looking ice cream (totally gross!) but the local dish of cuttlefish and squid ink risotto was deeeeelicious.Read more

  • Korčula Island

    October 8, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Some beautiful lightweight cycling across Korčula island (we left the trailer in a hotel for a few days) which was heaven on the knees!
The sun shone all day, the wind died down a bit and all our wet washing finally dried! Hurrah!!Read more

  • Bosnia & Herzegovina

    October 10, 2016 in Bosnia and Herzegovina ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Stopped off for a night in Neum to tick Bosnia off the list! Turned out to be the friendliest place, our host did all our washing (for free), cooked us amazing pancakes for breakfast and gave us a free lunch to take on our way.

The coastal road was a dream and the highlight came when a random man flagged us down and proceeded to empty his crate of satsumas into our trailer.

  • Mr Hedderwick... you're the best!!

    October 12, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After two and half months on the road, what could be more welcome than a luxurious stay in an incredible hotel in Dubrovnik. The valet wasn't quite sure what to do when we asked him to park the tandem in the underground car park! I let him off in the end. Saunas and steam rooms were much appreciated. Thank you Pix for a great wedding present.Read more

  • Montenegro

    October 14, 2016 in Montenegro ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Stayed the night in Hercegnovi before heading on towards the bay of Kotor this morning. The road runs right around the edge where the steep mountains meet the sea. We could literally feel the hot winds meeting the cold wind as we cycled along towards Kotor and are now watching an incredible lightening storm from our bedroom window.
Tasted some delicious weird pastry roll thing full of fruit and syrupy stuff en route this morning and just had an amazing sea food platter for din dins! Uh ohhhh. Diet starts tomorrow, obviously.

  • Tivat

    October 15, 2016 in Montenegro ⋅ 🌫 19 °C

We continued our cycle round the bay of Kotor which was incredibly beautiful and ended in the The Monaco of the Adriatic, Tivat. This towns exclusive harbour and marina are very different to the surrounding area, as a few billionaires have invested heavily in the area. This is our last stop in Europe before we flying back for some R&R.Read more

  • Vietnam!

    November 2, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We may have slightly cheated again on public transport to get us to our latest destination, Hanoi. We flew in yesterday and are soaking up the sights and sounds of Hanoi. Having had a catch up with an old school mate Wez last night we are formulating a plan to cycle down the Ho Chi Minh highway which is apparently the quieter of the trunk roads that's leads to Ho Chi Minh itself. Hanoi itself is pretty crazy and great fun. The food is good and the beer is insanely cheap. The traffic is.......bonkers!!!Read more

  • Ha Long Bay

    November 3, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We've decided to postpone the start of the cycling and are exploring this incredible bit of coast just east of Hanoi. It's made up of 1965 islands in the form of vertical sided uninhabited Karst mountains. We had two days on a beautiful junk boat, stopped off in some huge caves, kayaked around the islands, made some spring rolls and relaxed in the sun. A nice way to get over the jet lag!Read more

  • And we're off!

    November 5, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

The 5am start to get us through and out of Hanoi was well worth it and Olly did an amazing job of not getting us hit by anything! Apparently there's some kind of secret unwritten code to driving on the roads here but from what we could tell, it's the bigger you are, the higher up in the pecking order you are and thus the less you look in your mirrors. Busses literally charge through, swerving from lane to lane like the driver's had way too many sherries. Everybody honks their horns incessantly. And instead of indicating, you 'look' in the direction you plan to go. Awesome.

However, soon we were out of Hanoi and into beautiful countryside. We stayed in a 'Nha Nghi' (homestay) in a village called Phu Thanh en route to Ninh Binh. For
6 dollars a night... let's say you get what you pay for!

Oh and we saw a digger on the edge of a cliff. That was quite exciting!

  • Tràng an (Ninh Bình)

    November 7, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

A very relaxing morning spent rowing through the waterways that wind around karst mountains and beneath them via connecting caves. We saw some temples (fish, stalk, turtle etc) and a kingfisher along the way.
Our multitalented guide showed off some impressive rowing skills using only her feet... olly took it all 'on board' and will be putting this into practice in Rhoscolyn next summer.

  • Cúc Phúóng national park

    November 8, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We hired a moped, drive 20km into the rainforest and then trekked in to see some ancient trees and hopefully some scary beasts. Among others, there are leopards, jungle cars and cobras (all the rhino, tigers and elephants have been driven out by poaching) but sadly we only saw spiders, crabs (?!) and butterflies! Phew!!Read more
