  • Canal Day Part I, Gatun Locks and Lake

    December 30, 2023 in Panama ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

For my engineering geeks, every time a ship traverses the Panama canal, 50 million gallons of water are released from lake Gatun into the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. That applies to the old locks. The new locks have incorporated holding tanks that reuse at least some of the water.Read more

  • Panama Canal Part II, through the cut

    December 30, 2023 in Panama ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

But first, lunch on the veranda as we cruise the lake. For my accounting geeks, the resident Panama Canal experts informed me it likely cost Viking somewhere north of $750,000 for our 6 hour transit. No one on either end of that transaction seems eager to talk about details though. The Centennial Bridge at the Pacific end looks very similar to the Atlantic Bridge.Read more

  • Costa Rica (for a few hours)

    January 1, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We have been to Costa Rica four times now, and one of the things that always brought us back is still apparent today; the warmth and kindness of the Costa Rican people. Maybe there's something to be said for demilitarization and pacifism.Read more

  • Cabo San Lucas

    January 6, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Thirty years ago we vacationed here with friends. We were five months pregnant with our son, Ian. As the only one not drinking and able to drive a stick shift we explored the area all the way up to La Paz. It was a beautiful sleepy area then. What a difference to see this morning the seemingly endless resorts and condos.Read more

  • Santa Barbara

    January 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Our second tender port, and a seal decided it would jump into the ship where the tender docks, they had to lure it out with fresh salmon. Wish I had a photo.

  • Moorea, wow...

    January 24, 2024 in French Polynesia ⋅ 🌧 81 °F

As stunning as Bora Bora was, Moorea (moh-oh-ray-uh) was ten times as amazing. Rugged peaks and beautiful lagoons, truly paradise. Went on a six hour private (non Viking) excursion, just us and another person and had an amazing time. We snorkeled with a school of 4-5 foot black tip sharks, amazing!Read more
