  • Southern Hemisphere Star Photography

    January 30, 2024, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌬 73 °F

Our cruise resident astronomer led many of us to the top deck and turned off the lights for a talk on the Southern Hemisphere stars. We caught several good photos with just our Google phones which have a night star setting.Read more

  • Our Cabin

    January 31, 2024, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌬 73 °F

Our home away from home is very comfortable. Small with lots of storage and we've added magnetic hooks to walls to hang things too. Honestly, there's so much going on we don't spend a lot of time here during the day. The closet lights up when you approach... need that at home! Compared to other cruises, these cabins are extremely quiet! No inside cabins at all. Can't hear anything from next door including loud televisions or talking. About 150 kilometers to New Zealand. Looking forward to getting there!Read more

  • Bay of Islands and Russell, New Zealand

    February 1, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Expectations were high for New Zealand and they have been exceeded. Toured the countryside around The Bay of Islands (far north) then took the ferry across the bay to the idyllic little town of Russell. We're selling it all and moving to Russell! (Probably not the last time we'll feel that way about a destination in this trip.)Read more

  • Two nights in Auckland

    February 2, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

A wonderful city, very friendly people; and again, someplace we could easily call home.

  • Tauranga (Mount Maunganui)

    February 5, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Took an excursion out to the kiwi (the fruit not the bird) capital of New Zealand and learned everything we ever wanted to know about the kiwi industry. There are green, gold and ruby kiwi and they can be stored near 0° C for up to two years without degradation. In the afternoon we hiked from the ship around the extinct volcano that guards the entrance to the harbor.Read more

  • Napier, New Zealand

    February 6, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

The Hawke's Bay wineries treated us to a very nice wine tasting at the beautiful Hawke's Bay Club. Napier was rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake and fire. The art deco architecture style was chosen creating a very artsy and fun community. They rolled out the red carpet for us and we all enjoyed this lovely city!Read more

  • Wellington, New Zealand

    February 7, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Wellington, NZ, is the coolest little national capital in the world! On the southwestern tip of the North Island it is also the southernmost capital of an independent nation. We enjoyed Zealandia Eco Reserve in the morning and the Wellington Cable Car and Botanic Gardens in the afternoon. We will not be going south to Milford Sound because of a large storm out of Antarctica. Captain Richard said 21 ft swells were not a good idea. Off to Australia.Read more

  • Windy Wellington

    February 7, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 68 °F

Actually just a little wind in the morning but that's the city's nickname. We did find out this AM we will not be going to the fjordlands on the south island due to some extreme weather making its way north from Antarctica. Bummed!!! Zealandia, an eco-preserve, in the morning and a fun bus tour of the city in the afternoon.Read more

  • Wandering Albatross! 3 in total.

    February 8, 2024, Tasman Sea ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

I think we have our first albatross sighting!!! These things can have a wing span of over 11 feet, greater than an Andean condor, and live to be 80 years old. They rarely flap their wings, they do something called dynamic soaring, skimming the water and then gliding upward, then back down to the water, graceful.Read more

  • Almost to Melbourne...

    February 11, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Woke up this morning and here was Skull Island outside our window!

Our sister ship the Viking Sky, also on a world cruise but slightly different itinerary, was spotted off the starboard bow.

Fun tour of Sydney sites and Bondi Beach.

  • Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef

    February 25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 84 °F

Just WOW... We saw more in our 2 hours of snorkeling the GBR than we have seen in all our other snorkeling trips combined, and we've been to some nice spots all over the Caribbean and Mexico.

  • Update - Africa around the horn!

    February 25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 84 °F

We finally got our new itinerary for avoiding the Red Sea and heading around the horn of Africa. We're excited and looking forward to it!
