  • Day 1

    6. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Nice and early and straight onto the beach of Sodwana Bay. It's winter here and I cannot believe how cold the sand is. My expectation was that the sea would be as cold, but it was surprisingly warm. Jack took a swim with me the others and didn't dare beautiful walk along the beach as the Sun comes up.
Community day always a tough on the Volunteers. First stop the children's home always greeted with a warm welcome by Noshile. then off to meet Saziso and out into the community, three houses all needing a new one to be built, but as usual, not enough funds,
    Need to make a plan.!
Got a phone call it was Xoliswa saying that he was stuck in Mbazwana. I called him a liar saying he wasn't there he said Crissssss I promise can you pick me up? I want to supplies you for your birthday.
Best birthday treat ever cheers matey.

It's a challenge getting the teenagers up early, but they all said it was worth it after we went to the beach to see the sunrise.
Then out into the community to see all the houses that we have built and for Craig and Jack to see the houses that they built When they were last here.
Then off to the tree for some dinner bet you £100 that Sharon has calamari..!
They don't know it's my birthday, but it was nice to treat them all.

    9. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Today we have two teachers (Lesley & Karen) making their journey from UK via Doh to Durban to be picked up tomorrow. gonna be working in the Christop Meyer School with Dorothy the principal.
    Second day of the Build.
The team getting on really well, the house is coming up so quick. I had to go of with Nkosie to visit three houses for the October trip to make a decision on which house we are going to build. Challenging never enough funds and so many people so desperate.

  • Day 5

    10. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

The team today went to the build a little later has we had not received the delivery of blocks yesterday. Often a challenge getting all the materials out here.
I went to the airport to pick up the two volunteers that will be working at the Christoph Meyer project.
Phew..! Forgot how far the journey back down to Durban and back up again to the Lodge is. Nine hours driving straight.
Then a huge challenge with the electricity company that wanted to cut us off after an hour and a half negotiation we managed to convince him to keep her power on for two weeks that we are here.
Now to pile the Volunteers into the van and off up to Rachel's house as she is visiting Nosihle, for dinner.
Just like the good old days.
Just has we were leaving Dumas asked if we want to watch the football on his big screen. England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 versus Netherlands 🇳🇱
    I WANT MY BED...!
But for the good of the volunteers we stay. It's was word it....😂😂😂
    2-1 happy volunteers.

  • Day 6

    11. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

All the plans were made for us to go to the breakfast club only one problem the guys that deliver the bricks forgot to add the porridge onto the load for the schools.
So after making a phone call at 4:30 am I realised that the porridge wasn't at the school so I went around to each Volunteer and told him that they had a lie in until 7am. Best plans sometime never work..!

    Take two....
Up at 7am and then of to paint Xolani house that the April trip had donated has an extra. He had work so hard finishing it off. I asked him what colour he would like and he said Green only challenges we only have one pot but he said let's give it a go, fortunately it was enough..

After a successful day of painting, it was the hours drive back to the Lodge to drop everybody off a quick change for Ryan and Me as we then went back to Mduku to meet Saziso to observe them in their workshop where they teach young men responsibilities of life and then they have a game of football. Ryan spotted a young man actually a boy 15 years old with such talent in the UK he probably would've been spotted and put onto some training program running around in bare feet, with such skill.
Ryan asked if it was possible to buy him a pair of football boots. Always possible but actually it's approving a bigger challenge than I thought......

  • Day 7

    12. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

    Second time lucky.!
Up at 5am and ready to go to the breakfast club. This is probably one of my favourite activities just seeing and knowing that all the children are being fed and can start their day with a full belly.
Had a chat with Musa to arrange for the children to sing happy birthday for Ryan and David as a surprise I didn't quite realise that it would have such an impact on them and also with the Volunteers.
They were presented with gifts by two of the children at the end You could just see Ryans heart melt.
Off to finish the sealing of paint at Xolani house.
We also gave him a few gifts from the ladies that came out in April that boys got such a smile on his face. His whole world has been turned upside down in such a good way.
New challenge. He cannot get his certificates for his degree until he has paid the remaining £1000 off for, his course that he took which means then that he cannot get a job without a certificates.
    Need to make a plan.!
A quick visit to Lindani's mum. Always wish I could spend longer with her. She brings such joy to my heart. Take a little selfie so I can send it to Lindani who misses her.

Then off up to the children's home with a short stop off at the Build to give the builders their steak we bought them.
The volunteers do a loom band with the children in Ebeneezer nursery and I have a two hour meeting with Rachel and Nosilhe. Sharon also has a meeting with Khanyo

After a very, productive day it's to Sodwana Bay lodge for a birthday celebration for David and Ryan. They lost two cakes that have been made by the wonderful Mai.
One cake will probably be enough, but we fed the whole restaurant and the waitresses and the kitchen staff and the big Boss man who's always grumpy but I did detect a little smile in the corner of his mouth. Successful day all round......

  • Day 8

    13. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

The team got a lie in today which they were very grateful for. The two teachers that we have with us went off up to the children's home to do a loom bands with them while the rest of the team went down to watch a football match in Mduku.
In England we get a streaker run across the pitch but here it was a young cow who thought he'd join the game. Absolutely hilarious.!
In the UK that would've been an end of game end of tournament risk assessment forms galore. Here they didn't even notice and just kept playing. I love it...!

    14. heinäkuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A great day is always the Safari day and I love it when the volunteers get the surprise of meeting the Elephants. We stayed at The Barn and not Bayete Zulu. Which was different and gave us access to the Northern part of the reserve.
This one has been the best one in the 14yrs I have been doing this. The only thing we didn't see was a cheetah 🐆
