  • Bad Gastein (1)

The old town of Bad Gastein spreads a scent of belle-époque atmosphere with its artistic architecture – nestled in dramatic mountain scenery all around it!

Took the cable car to the „Stubnerkogel“ and hiked up to the „Tischkogel“ (2.409m) and „Zitterauer Tisch“ (2.463m) and all the way down back to Bad Gastein.もっと詳しく

  • Bad Gastein - Wörthersee - Bled

Travel day with a stop in Velden and Villach at the Wörthersee before I crossed the border to Slovenia and reached my final destination for this day: Bled.

  • Soča Valley

Another beautiful place on earth! And I think the pictures describe the beauty of this place the most.

You can see the source of the river in picture 1.

After I hiked down from the source back to Bovec (25km) I took the bus up the Vršič Pass and stayed in the mountain hut „Erjavec“.

Vršič is a high mountain pass across the Julian Alps that connects Kranjska Gora with Bovec and it was originally built for military purposes during World War I. The road through the pass is currently known as Ruska cesta (“Russian Road”), renamed in July 2006 to honour the Russian prisoners of war that were forced to build it.

  • Erjavec Hut / Mala Mojstrovka

Woke up in the mountains on the Vršič Pass in the Erjavec Hut, had a kind of luxury breakfast (I cooked by myself the last days) and started my hike to Mala Mojstrovka.

    2km
    683m/683m

Interesting fact about the public transport in Slovenia: everyone gets an 80% discount on weekends. So I took the bus from the Vršič Pass to Kranjska Gora (1h, 1,30€) and another to Ljubljana (2h, 2,20€).

  • Belgrad

Well, Belgrade, I am sorry but I didn’t like you 😅 but actually I am just here to catch the train to Montenegro.

Belgrade is called the white city but actually it is a grey city. But I heard a lot of good things about the nature of Serbia. So maybe I come back someday.

And in Belgrade, the clocks still tick a little differently, behind: I couldn’t buy my train ticket online, I had to go to the train station and buy the ticket there, which was then issued by typewriter 😅

  • Train ride Belgrad to Montenegro

But my reason to come to Belgrade: I wanted to go by train to Montenegro. The route is considered as one of the most beautiful train routes in Europe.
And yes, it was a very idyllic train ride through a hilly and mountainous landscape, over hundreds of bridges and through hundreds of tunnels and across a large lake. The only problem was that the windows were so dirty that you could barely enjoy the view 😅もっと詳しく

  • Tirana

    Hello Albania, hello Tirana 🇦🇱

Waiting for my travel buddy for the next 10 days. Unfortunately her flight was delayed by almost 24h. So we started our road-trip through Albania on day later and needed to skip one destination.

    Interesting facts about Albania:

Only 3 million people live in the country. There are more Albanians now living outside the country than within its territories.

The majority of Albanians are Muslim. This is because of the country had been under Ottoman rule.

The highest point in Albania is Mount Korab, which is 2.764 metres high. Albania shares this mountain with two other countries, Kosovo and Macedonia.

The oldest lake in Europe is found in Albania. The lake, known as Ohrid, is one of the world’s ancient lakes. A variety of unique plants and animal species, as well as living fossils, are found at the lake. The lake is protected by UNESCO due to its heritage.

Four glaciers were discovered in the country in 2009 by a group of explorers from the University of Colorado. The unique glaciers found in North Albania’s Cursed Mountains lie at a low altitude of 2,000 metres and are the southernmost glaciers in Europe.

The small country has significant biodiversity. A variety of 3.250 plant species can be found in the country, which is almost one third of all plant species found in Europe.

  • Tirana - Lake Skadar - Theth

    Let’s go on a road-trip!

Lake Skadar, Southern Europe’s largest lake, is found in Albania. The lake, whose surface area varies between 370 sq km and 530 sq km, is shared between Albania and Montenegro. Only a third of the lake lies within Albanian borders.

Theth is a wonderful village in northern Albania’s Shkodra region. Set among the peaks of the Shala mountains, Theth is isolated, and in times of snow, practically inaccessible.

Fun fact: You can buy Raki 🥃 (a famous and traditional liquor) in 5 or 10l bottles for a little amount - it’s a normal thing and you find the big bottles in every supermarket.

Ended our day with a hike to the beautiful waterfall of Theth in Grunas.

  • Theth

Day hike to the beautiful Blue Eye of Theth.
The Blue Eye in Theth is a simply breath-taking waterfall nestled in a valley amongst the Albanian Alps. The Blue Eye gets its name from the shockingly vibrant water, which is also deceivingly cold!

Btw: Vanessa took this beautiful picture of myself at breakfast. It was the beginning of our photo challenge for the next days: who can do the most funniest photo?

  • Komani Lake/Shala River - Berat

    Day tour to Shala River.

Shala River is a touristic destination that is described by many visitors as the most beautiful pearl of Koman’s lake, as Thailand of Albania . The hazy color of water and it’s crystal clean water is characteristic of this river. The steep huge rocks, worn by trees and green plants, seem to rise to the sky to protect this beauty that so generously mother nature has offered to our eyes and hearts.

After this beautiful day on the water, we continued in the evening to the small town of Berat - the town of a thousand windows.

  • Berat

This upland city in south-central Albania has 2,500 years of history, which has bestowed it with stunning archaeology, quaint residential areas and preserved monuments. Berat’s appeal lies in its UNESCO World Heritage architecture and the epic mountain scenery that shelters the city. Since coming under the yoke of the Ottoman Empire in the 1400s Berat is also a place where Christians and Muslims have lived together in relative peace, with churches and mosques sharing the same space. The cityscape is part of Berat’s charm, where picturesque stone houses on the steep hillsides seem to be stacked on top of each other.

The Archaeological Museum of Apolonia is an archaeological museum west of Fier. It was established in 1958. The museum contains artifacts unearthed nearby from the archaeological site of Apollonia and is close to the Ardenica Monastery.

Gjirokastra (alternately written Gjirokastër because, Albania) is a UNESCO World Heritage gem, thanks to its gorgeous Ottoman-era stone architecture. In fact, Gjirokastra is lovingly nicknamed “the city of stones” due to its unique building style.

  • Blue Eye

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër in Albanian) is a water spring and initial water source of the Bistricë, a 25 km long river which ends in the Ionian Seat just south of Saranda. The source is a natural phenomenon with a depth of at least 50 meters, the deepest any diver has been able to go, so the actual depth is even unknown.
