    17. april 2024, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

A very picturesque and affluent holiday village of southern France with typical Basque architecture.

  • Irun albergue

    18. april 2024, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

It has taken all day to walk from Guthary in France to Irun in Spain. It started damp but because hot and bright in the afternoon. Arrived at 17.00 and went straight out to eat. Most pilgrims in the albergue have arrived by bus or train to start walking the Northern way. It appears that only myself, my Companion and two Spanish ladies walked here by the costal camino.Les mer

A very cold night after a very sunny day's walking. Staying in an Albergue with few facilities except beds, toilet and shower. Short walk today along a path alongside a very infrequently used local train line. Picked up the albergue keys from the local police station.Les mer

Leaving last night's town and it is very cold. An Italian pilgrim joined us at the albergue last night; he has been on the road for the last 6 months on various caminos. Following the Oria river valley today. Walking to Tolosa today: no albergue but a nice hotel.Les mer

Arrived early afternoon and had a menu de dia with the jubliados (the local retirees) at a very reasonable price: 3 courses, wine, water and coffee for less than £10. A cold and sunny day but dry. Tomorrow is predicted to be wet! An interesting town with so many different building styles, deep in a river valley and surrounded by high hills.Les mer

    23. april 2024, Spania ⋅ 🌫 8 °C

It was forecast to rain 14.7mm today and I think they underestimate the amount, as it rained heavily from 07.30 until 15.45 and we walked through 6.5 hours of this deluge. We had lunch at a very nice restaurant but left a puddle of water around our table that could have supported a considerable aquatic eco-system. I was reasonably dry under my stylish but practical poncho but I am starting to wonder how I have arrived at this situation. I am nearly 70 years of age and I am still wondering through the Spanish countryside, in the rain, with an increasingly heavy rucksack on my back, wearing pungent clothes that I can't wash and dry because of the very high local humidity and eating my way through the Basque country one large plate of carbohydrates at a time. Why didn't somebody stop me?Les mer

Now the rain has stopped we had a walk around this modern town. The albergue is part of a historical complex of old buildings and made very homely by the kind hospitaleros. Alijandro, the hostitalero from 4 nights ago came to visit us and brought wine, cheese and meat, which was very generous of him.Les mer

A nice new albergue with a washing machine and a dryer, which we desperately needed. Collected the key from the town hall and used the 'town lift' to get from the lower town up to the albergue. The infrastructure is very good in these Basque towns. There is general concern about the climb through the mountains tomorrow. A gain in elevation of 800 metres in 8 km is going to be a long and painful experience (slope of 1 in 10 for 5 miles). The possibility of snow will just add jeopardy to the experience.Les mer

Very cold albergue with lots of squeaky and soft beds but only 3 of us here. Very, very tired from a hard day of 8 and a half hours of ascending and descending through the mountains, ending up with a 6 km trek along a reasonable flat road across a plain.Les mer
