  • Walking Day 15 to Santiago de Compostela

    June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

14.3 miles today. We left dawn, we had breakfast together before we started walking. I rained fairly heavy when we started out and the rain was intermittent the rest of the morning. I walked mostly alone the first 9 miles, but I'm glad it worked out that way. I needed to process what to make of the past 19 days. I was separated from the others because i didn't see that they has stopped at a cáfe. Then i was well ahead of everyone. I inadvertently took another Complementario route so i didn't know where I was in relation to the rest. I stopped at another cáfe about 5 km from Santiago and waited for the rest. We wanted to walk into Santiago together. after walking another 1 km, we got our first view of Santiago and the cathedral but I could not see much We started walking into the city at a slower pace just to absorb the moment. Rachel from Australia and John and Elaine from New Zealand passed us. A man on a unicycle was behind us. We heard the cathedral bells chime at noon, and then again at 12:15 when we arrived. There was a line to several hundred waiting to get into the cathedral so we didn't try to get inside. We went around to the courtyard in from of the cathedral. What a joyful time and place. i could see it in the faces all around me. The moment a dream becomes reality for so many, including myself and my companions. Jackie and her friend, the two Australian women we dined with in Trabadelo and met frequently on the trail were there when we arrived. I really don't know how to relay the essence of this moment, but the only thing missing in the celebration was Mary Kay and the ones I love most. I sent a few people my celebration picture, including Luis. Luis sent me his celebration picture. Then we went to get our passport and credentials.Read more

  • y viva España

    June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We found cáfe near the cathedral for dinner after i showered and did some laundry. We were returning to our hotel, passing through the main cathedral square exactly where our photos were taken earlier and noticed a band playing Spanish music. Matt and Donnie and I stepped into the small crowd to listen. What a special moment for all 3 of us. a moment of shared joy and fun. I'm not sure how you would classify the band with guitars and bagpipes, but there was no way you could be there and not sing along and dance a little. The played Cielito Lindo, Guantanamo and Y Viva España. We all sang along and clapped, even though we have no idea what they were singing. I video called Mary Kay so she could join us too. For that half hour or so that we stayed, we experienced a taste of heaven above, here at our feet. We all agreed that that was a very special moment in our lives.Read more

  • Day in Santiago

    June 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

A day to relax. We stopped for breakfast on the way back to the cathedral, we wanted to watch the peregrinos as the entered the square. People were applauding, apparently there was a wedding on a balcony of the state building. I watched a young couple coming in, and they embraced for several minutes(see photo), and then laid together on their backpacks. A few minutes later. He proposed to her. Then we checked to see if we could get into the cathedral, and there was only a small line.. it is a magnificent cathedral. We walked by the tomb of St. James, then just lingered for awhile to soak it all in. We then spent some time relaxing at the cáfe and we met up with Luis again. We chatted the rest of the afternoon in a busy area by the park, watching peregrinos coming in from the Portuguese route. We headed back towards the cathedral and helped a man from Cleveland find his way. We went back to the hotel and rested. I decided to make one last visit to the cathedral and get something to eat. Coming back from the cathedral,on an empty street, i heard my name called out. I ran into Luis again, for one last adios.Read more

  • Bus back to Madrid

    June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

Checked out of the hotel to catch a 5,;45 bus to Madrid, but the bus took a scenic route to northwest Spain before heading back to Madrid. We saw much to the mountain landscape the we previously hiked through. 9 hours on the bus, and the baño was disabled for half the trip. We didn't have any food or coffee , but that was probably good that we didn't. We arrived in Madrid and had a quick Sandwich the bus station We hiked about 2 km through the park with full packs to get to our apartment. I'm really glad we didn't try to carry a full pack for the 306 km if the Camino. Finally had dinner at 9pm, when the restaurant opened.Read more
