Wonderful flight down through France and Spain crossing the Mediterranean just east of Gibraltar, allowing great views of it and the Straits of Gibraltar. I even saw Ceuta the Spanish port city in North Africa.Read more

This is not just a market, it's a district where every little street is a different market. Spices, meat, clothes, leather, mopeds and so much more. The hustle and bustle and smells are amazing, apart from the live poultry.Read more

Casablanca Medina

After stopping for a refreshing mint tea or two it was off to join a small walking tour of the Medina. This is the oldest part of Casablanca.
At different times it has been governed by Berber, Roman, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, French, British, and Moroccan regimes. The original Berber name, Anfa (“hill” in English), was in use by the locals until the French occupied Morocco in 1907 and adopted the Spanish name, Casablanca.
It's a maze of narrow wee streets.Read more

After the Medina we walked along the promenade to the massive Hassan II Mosque. When built in it was the third largest mosque in the world, and in the largest functioning mosque in Africa. Its minaret is 210m tall. On the 29th day of Ramadan over 100,000 pray in the huge outside area and 25,000 inside. Unfortunately you need to join a special tour to get inside.Read more

El Hank Lighthouse

Decided to walk along the Corniche, the modern promenade, to the El Hank lighthouse. It was a good long walk passing many anglers, including one fishing from a tyre tube. Looked a bit dodgy 😳. By the time I returned along the Corniche the mist had come in covering the mosque.Read more

Volubilis Roman City

Met up with the tour group for a meal last night then headed north today at 8am.
After a few hours we stopped for a tour of the Roman city of Volubilis.
The Mauritanian capital, founded in the 3rd century B.C., became an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was graced with many fine buildings. Extensive remains of these survive in the archaeological site, located in a fertile agricultural area. Volubilis was later briefly to become the capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who is buried at nearby Moulay Idris.Read more
