  • Oia

    22 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a great lunch of seafood rice we walked into town to see the monastery (ceertainly not to clock up any steps).

Galician seafood rice is unbelievably rich in flavor, creamy while still maintaining the rice's crispness and brimming with seafood.

The cold waters off the coast of Galicia are home to a huge variety of mariscos (shellfish). There are a dozen types of clams, oysters and scallops, four or five species of squid and more kinds of shrimp and lobster than you can count.

All the locals were having a drink in the local pub and just sat on the wall drinking their beer. A great easy lifestyle

  • Santa María de Oia Monastery

    22 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Construction of the Santa María de Oia Monastery, the municipality's main monument, began in the mid-12th century, during the reign of Galician King Alfonso VII. Within its walls gathered monks who previously lived in various parts of the region. In 1185 it joined the Cistercian Order.

Thanks to its strategic location (right beside the sea), Santa María de Oia played an important role in defending the coast. In 1624 the monks managed to thwart an attack by the Turkish fleet, for which Philip IV granted the monastery the right to use "Royal" in its name. Following the 1835 Disentailment Act it passed into private hands, although the church serves as parish church.

Sadly today they are changing it into a hotel

Between Baiona and A Guarda is Oia, where the coastline stands firm against the force of the ocean. This spectacular sight can be seen from the mountains, where wild horses graze freely.
The monastery of Santa María la Real is something else Oia town council can boast. It is Romanesque from the 12th century and has a baroque façade put up in the 18th century, during one of a series of alterations. It has been declared a National Monument.Baca lagi

  • Crystal Beach

    23 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our journey this morning started with the most wonderful deaf taxi driver who took us to Crystal Beach to start. He was incredibly kind and caring and really wanted us to start from this special place.

Sometimes nature decides what to do, and the sea always brings back everything that it is thrown away in it. In this area of Laxe, there used to be a dump where bottles and other items were left. In these cliffs the sea somehow picked up this garbage debris and returned them transformed into art pieces polished by the sea leaving them in this small cove.

  • Baiona

    23 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We walked into Baiona which is a beautiful old town.

It is of great historical importance, since on March 1, 1493 , Martín Alonso Pinzón arrived on the shores of Bayonne after his trip to America , making this town the first in Europe to hear the news of the discovery of the New World.

The first historical references to the town are from the beginning of the 13th century , Castreño and Roman remains are scarce throughout the municipality, with an extensive area of petroglyphs in Baíña and a Roman road that runs through La Groba towards Vigo.

  • Vigo

    24 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today we walked into Vigo which was unfortunately not a pretty walk. We walked in through the industrial areas and port and decided to take a taxi to the hotel.

In the Early Middle Ages, the small village of Vigo was part of the territory of Galician-speaking neighbouring towns, particularly Tui, and suffered several Viking attacks. However, its number of inhabitants was so small that, historically, it was not considered a real villa until around the 15th century, when the earliest records began.

Vigo grew very rapidly in the 20th century, thanks to the fact that the Franco government granted it a tax-free zone in 1947 allowing companies to be set up there for free, as well as an Industrial Development Pole in 1964, a very unusual case for a non-capital of a Spanish province. Continuous urban-planning changes left Vigo less structured than other Galician cities. — with Daphne Mackay and Jacqui Becker at Vigo, Galicia, España.

It stands out for being one of the three great pilgrimage centers of Christianity , along with Jerusalem and Rome , pointing out the tradition that the apostle Santiago el Mayor was buried there .

We attended a pilgrim mass in the cathedral , dedicated to the apostle Santiago, and this is the actual destination of the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world who each year complete the Camino de Santiago from various locations.

We celebrated our special friend Daphne Mackay's birthday and just had fun.

    29 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A last day of a holiday brings great emotions. Excitement to see loved ones, sadness our small group will each go their own way, and time to wait for our next adventure.

We started our day walking to the San Miguel food market.

More than 100 years have gone by since the Mercado de San Miguel opened its doors as a wholesale food market. Today, this historical building stands out as one of the world’s main gastronomic markets. It allows visitors to experience the essence and most significant flavors of every corner of Spain.

Because we went as it opened we were able to see all the food from the finest Iberian ham and freshest fish and shellfish brought in daily from Galicia, to Mediterranean rice dishes and the most exquisite cheeses from Castile, Asturias and the Basque country.
