  • The Forest Tower on the way to Mons

    22 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

The first stop on the journey is The Forest Tower at Camp Adventure - an architectural gem located deep within a forest, which has become one of Denmark's most recognizable landmarks. The spiral tower stretches high above the canopy, offering a dazzling 360-degree view over the green landscape. The Forest Tower has been nominated for and has won several international architecture awards.
The path to The Forest Tower goes via a three-kilometer-long elevated boardwalk, which winds around the beech trees and leads over the forest floor's small streams. Once you have completed the trek, the day is far from over. Camp Adventure offers a full palette of experiences, including Denmark's largest climbing park, zipline, Northern Europe's largest pick-your-own flower field, idyllic glamping cabins, and a cozy dining area with taste experiences for the whole family.

Unfortunately it was raining so not very comfortable or as good a view as could have been.
When I tried to dry my phone, I pocket dialled Ben!! 😂😂 He's well 😊

  • Mons Klint

    22 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I've been wanting to come here for a long time. Pity there was no sun but it was still impressive. Now I can say I've done Denmark's isle of Mons.

After enjoying the fresh forest air, continue south to Møns Klint, where chalk-white cliff formations dramatically plunge into the azure sea below. Møns Klint remains one of Denmark's most beautiful natural phenomena. The glowing chalk escarpment towers a full 128 meters high, and to move from top to bottom and back up again, one must conquer no less than 497 steps. The descent and ascent pass twisted tree trunks shaped by wind and weather, and on the horizon, you might be lucky enough to spot a peregrine falcon. Møns Klint is located in a unique natural area with its own microclimate.

At the top of Møns Klint, you can find Denmark's coolest science center, GeoCenter Møns Klint.

  • The hunt for the 6 forgotten giants

    23 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Go on a treasure hunt to find The Six Forgotten Giants in the western municipalities of Copenhagen: Rødovre, Hvidovre, Vallensbæk, Ishøj, Albertslund and Høje Taastrup. All six sculptures were made from scrap wood with the help of local volunteers. The project wanted to bring art out of the museum, show the beautiful and often overlooked nature spots, and at the same time give an exciting and different experience.
The designer was Thomas Dambo. He started these 6 in 2016. There are more than 100 all around the world now.

I went on a guided tour again. Only 6 of us, 2 of whom were from Sydney!!
The tour was supposed to be 4 hours but took longer because a few of us were walking wounded and there was lots of walking. Total of 8 km actually!! 12,000 steps by our smart watches!
I enjoyed seeing these guys in amongst their forest. We drove between sites.

  • To the Vistoft Mill

    25 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

This afternoon we drove an hour to Ebeltoft to Thor's family 's summer house. It is a renovated mill and surrounding buildings- a cottage and barn.
The barn is fully renovated into a party space with full kitchen, bathroom and sauna!! They use it for family parties, weddings, etc.
When not used for parties it houses Ib's workshop and Karen's art studio.

Ib and Karen have cooked up a feast for tea. I get the tour of the Mill which is now fully renovated. When I was here 5 years ago the "hat" was off and they were re-shingle-ing.

They have also made the attic of the cottage into a lovely self-contained living area. Ib and Karen spend half their time here and half in the house in Aarhus. Nanna, Thor's sister, has bought that house now, hasn't moved in yet but has renovation plans.

Nanna is getting married in 2025, and Thor and Sophie are planning for 2026. Both weddings will be here in the barn.

More news, Thor's friend who visited us, Andreas, has recently got married to the Danish girl he met in Australia and is expecting a baby.
Thor's brother Malte, now has 2 daughters.
Jeppe is still in a care apartment and happy (Thor's half brother who has Down's).

Sophie, Thor and Karen go back to Aarhus tonight, leaving me with Ib.
Karen has a niece's 50th birthday party in Copenhagen tomorrow and the others have work. Karen and Thor will be back Saturday. Sophie is going to Austria with her Scout group for a week!!

  • Back to Ebeltoft

    26 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Ib has plans for me today!!

It's raining but we go to Ebeltoft town just down the road. We park at a community centre that used to be an old Malt Factory. We go in for a look.
It now has kids activities which include playing with some of the working parts of the factory, and a good library.

We then walk through the pretty but wet streets of Old Ebeltoft to a restaurant we celebrated Steve's 50th and Thor's 18th birthdays in 2012, and then lunch in 2019.
Ib had a reservation for 2 people for lunch. We both had seafood tapas which was very nice.

We then drove 40 km to an Agricultural Museum.

  • The Green Museum

    26 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

    Det Grønne Museum.
The Green Museum is Denmark's national museum for hunting, the forest, agriculture and food.
"At our museum you will find experiences and knowledge for the whole family in the heart of Djursland . Visit us and have a lovely day for children and adults in our exhibitions, on the playground, with our livestock, in our farm and in the beautiful surroundings around Gammel Estrup."
It was once a big farm. It's very interesting and large. Because of the rain, we only did the inside but that was plenty for my foot. We can do the outside next time 😊.

On the way back Ib detoured into a place now owned by the Aarhus University. It was built as a hunting lodge (Ib called it a hunting castle). Very impressive and has a great view of the bay.

Come home for a rest then Ib cooks a "national" dish. Bacon, potatoes and a parsley gravy. With a Czech republic beer...Kozel, which means A Goat🐐.
I remember this beer on another trip Steve and I went on..most probably in Eastern Europe.

  • Thor and Karen are back

    27 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Thor and Karen came back about 10.30.
Thor drove us down to a lighthouse museum. Lovely beach with clear water.
Lunch, snooze, campfire and BBQ tea.

Then Thor, Ib and I watched Denmark beat France at Handball at the Olympics. It was a re- match of the last Olympics final where France won.
    Good game.
Karen wasn't interested, she watched the sunset instead. Sunsets about 10-10.30 pm at the moment.

  • Fregatten Jylland museum

    28 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

The frigate Jylland was built in 1860 as a warship with 3 masts, 44 guns and full power engine (steam engine). With a top speed of 14 knots, it was the fleet's fastest ship. The crew consisted of 437 enlisted men and trained officers.

We had great fun doing this!
    Find the Frigate's animals:
Activity for the whole family! Go hunting in every nook and cranny and challenge your family to a race to see who can find all the animals first. Find the card in the museum before you board.

I've been to Ebeltoft a few times now but have never seen the ship properly as it has always been raining! Today is windy but lovely sunshine.

    A good visit.

    28 juillet 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

After the ship visit we go into old Ebeltoft for lunch. Nice to visit in the sunshine today. Even though the streets and shops are old, they house contemporary shops.

On the way home Thor takes us for a drive through Mols Bjerge National Park. It is an area with both nature, culture and an active community with towns and villages, a protected area and farmland, and vast areas for outdoor activities. It's the only place in Denmark that has lots of rolling hills. It's usually very flat.En savoir plus

  • Goodbyes

    28–30 juil. 2024, Danemark ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

We have our "last supper" at the Mill before Thor and I head back to Aarhus for the night. It's sad to go but nice to know I'll be back 🙂

Monday morning I'm up early to start my looooong way back home.
I have to train back around to Copenhagen airport.
What should have been a straightforward non- stop journey taking 3 hours, it turned into a 5 hour 3-train trip. The first train took 3 attempts to get started. They then decided to put us in the train to Hamburg, Germany so we could switch trains at Frederica to get the next airport train. Thanks to some lovely Danish people providing some translation assistance, I still got there in plenty of time to check in.

So, then a 6 hour flight to Dubai. A 3 hour wait and then a 13 hour flight to Melbourne. It was actually not too bad a journey, Emirates economy seats have quite a bit of room.

I get into Melbourne about 10 pm.
Stay at Park Royal overnight then head home to Flinders Wednesday morning.

  • Diagnosis is...... it's broken!!

    1 août 2024, Australie ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Before I left Denmark I booked an appointment for first thing this morning for an x-ray.

Turns out I did actually break my mid foot (5th metatarsal). Now in a moon boot, x-ray again in 3 weeks to make sure it is healing properly.
    Feels better in a boot.

The group's Whatsapp chat group are now sharing their x-rays and treatments of their injuries too!! Quite a few people had falls of different kinds.

It was a lovely trip but it's also good to be home.
