    24 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We spent four nights off grid at a CL site next to the Kennet and Avon Canal. The sun shone for the whole period, however just after we arrived we were subjected to a short but spectacular hail storm.
We wandered into Trowbridge, along the canal, on the afternoon of our arrival in search of a fabric shop that we had been to one time previously - but is no longer there. Trowbridge was nice enough, but not somewhere we would rush back to.
Kirsty came over on Friday, and we drove into Bath where we enjoyed a lovely lunch at a Turkish restaurant prior to raiding the sewing shop on Charles Street. Much excitement for the ladies in wedding planning mode..
On Saturday we walked into Melksham along the canal, expecting to find a very quaint town nestling on the river - we were a little disappointed. Not to worry the canal tow path provided plenty of late season brambles to harvest on our return.
On Sunday we walked into Bradford upon Avon, along the canal, in glorious sunshine. Some narrowboat owners were out titivating their craft with great pride. The canal was quite busy with leisure travellers.
The canal sides were all very peaceful and relaxed, and we have resolved to find a few more canal side sites to visit in the coming weeks leading up to the new year.

  • Monmouthshire

    22 september 2020, Wales ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We planned a short walk over to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which took us along country footpaths clearly marked on the OS map. Evidently the local farmers pay little heed to historical rights of way, indeed one displayed a clear sign that "trespassers would be shot" next to the fenced off and barbed wire enclosed chicken run that stood where the footpath should have been - no effort had been made to encourage the rambler to take an alternative route. There was another solution nearby which we tried but once again we were unable to find the designated footpath, therefore we had to walk down the busy main road to find the third option, eventually gaining access to the canal via a boggy lane. We had not put our walking boots on for this short amble so ended up with muddy feet. We returned to site via a further alternative to escape the foot soaking.
The following day we planned to walk to Raglan Castle, a route of about 10 miles on the road but 5 miles as the crow flies. According to the OS map we could follow footpaths pretty much in a straight line from our site at Pontkemys. Once again the local farmers made no effort to assist the walker as to the whereabouts of the public footpaths, but armed with our interactive map and GPS locating phone we were able to follow the route closely this time. In a couple of instances, however, the traditional route shown on the map had disappeared with no clue as to where we ought to be walking.
Raglan Castle was quite a spectacle and must have been most impressive in its day. We had a rummage about then wandered into Raglan to pick up with Richard and Mad (eline) prior to driving to The Three Ponds Farm to meet with Kirsty and Matt.
We enjoyed a tour of Kirsty and Matt's wedding venue, and sampled some of the farm produce which was very tasty. Seeing the venue has put the girls into serious wedding planning mode.

  • Monmouthshire, Wales

    21 september 2020, Wales ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We left Sidmouth in glorious sunshine and drove to our next campsite in Monmouthshire, recommended by Matt's parents, Mad and Richard. What a fabulous site and location. We are on a pitch next to the river Usk, so we hear the babbling water from our beds! A busy site, but feels very safe, with immaculate facilities and many anti covid procedures in place. We have come to this area, as we plan on visiting Kirsty and Matt's chosen wedding location for next July. A booking has been made for the 6 of us to go along and view the location and to taste some of the foods from the suggested wedding menu. Fingers crossed it will still go ahead - as covid becomes ever more prevalent and we await further restrictions.
Our first full day in this location we walked from our site along the Usk valley walk into Usk. The walk was stunning, and followed the river for much of the way. We wandered around Usk, a quaint little place, then back to site returning the same way. We collected a bag full of cooking apples on our way (offered by a farm on the pathway) - which made the last bit of the journey slightly hard going - especially as the sun was searing down once again. We were very ready for a rest once back at site. In the evening we enjoyed a lovely meal at Mad and Richard's house - they live only a few miles from this site. It was good to catch up with them again.

  • Sidmouth

    18 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A quick trip to Sidmouth to catch up with Alison, Russ and Meg.
We enjoyed a couple of beers on Sidmouth promenade from the bar at The Bedford Hotel whilst catching up with A and R's news. We are really enjoying this September sunshine and are making the most of it by being outdoors as much as possible. We had a relaxing day with Meg and wandered around Sidmouth - it was busy with many others also making the most of the autumn sunshine. We enjoyed a glass of fizz or two whilst watching Strictly on TV - enjoyable even though repeats from previous years. We are all looking forward to this year's competition - although it clearly will be quite different this year.Läs mer

  • Tintagel

    17 september 2020, England ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

More pictures of the coast along this stretch.
The walk turned out to be one of the more strenuous ones we have done - we returned via the inland paths on the high ground across fields from Boscastle.
We celebrated in the evening with a glass or two of wine as we sorted out our accommdation for the first 12 weeks of 2021.

    17 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Waking up to beautiful sunshine was a treat as we had planned a coastal walk to Boscastle. We had it in our heads that this was a quick walk as the distance did not look too great on the map. We were proved wrong - the walk was fabulous - dotting in and out of all the coves and rising to the cliff tops before dropping into the valleys. The sea views were once again beautiful and rugged. We walked over Smith's Cliff, dropped down to Bossinay Haven and Benoath Cove and into Rocky Valley, then rose up again to pass by Trewethett Farm CAMC site (we tried to book in here for our stay but it was full) whch had spectacular views across the coastline.
We stopped by Ladies Window for our lunch prior to descending via the Forrabury Stitches into Boscastle. The views the whole way were stunning and dramatic, every bit of the coastline we have been to in Cornwall has been special.

    16 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Wednesday started under mist once again, which fitted well with our planned lazy day.
We did some foward planning for Jan/Feb and have found a great cottage to rent in Dorset as we will not get to Australia in the new year.
The photos are of Tintagel Castle under the mist

    14 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

A travelling day - a few miles up the coast via the supermarket at Redruth for a stock up.
We arrived at our site early afternoon and wandered into the village for a quick look under glorious sunshine. The village was busy with visitors although the Post Office NT property was closed due to the Covid situation. The village is full of cafe and food outlets and some nice smells were coming out of the bakery.
The following day we wandered up to Tintagel Castle midmorning as we had pre booked our time slot with English Heritage. We arrived under cloudy but sunny skies but were soon swamped by mist that rolled in off the sea which added to the mystique of the place.
The site was arranged on a one way walking basis with the first section leading up to the new bridge, exit was via the long drop underneath the bridge to low level where we continued down to Merlin's cave on the beach below.
After our visit we set off southards along the coast path - we did not venture too far as we could not see the coastline due to the mist and returned to our van for a lazy afternoon. Karen did some hand sewing and A prepared the evening meal.

  • St Agnes

    12 september 2020, England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We walked to Perranporth along the coastal path from St Agnes. One of our longer walks taking in the newsagents in the village on the way.
The first part of the walk took us via Trevaunance Cove, a beautiful little spot with a beach at low tide. This was followed by a big climb up and over the Blue Hills into Blue Hills Valley before climbing once again to the high ground, to pass via Cigga head and Shag Rock, before dropping down into Perranporth.
We found a quiet cafe and enjoyed a cream tea which we enjoyed the Devon way (cream beneath jam) much more manageable. We had promised ourselves a cream tea whilst here, ans as we only have 5 days left before heading back into Devon we reasoned today was a good day to do it - especially we were planning on walking 12 miles over the course of the day, which hopefully would work off some of the calories!!!! We found a seat by the beach and read the paper for an hour prior to returing along the coast path from where we came. We walked up the Blue Hills Valley, which saved a second arduous climb and descent in what turned out to be one of our longer walks.

    10 september 2020, England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

A short trip up the coast to another place that Jonathon, (our guide in Plymouth) suggested was worth a look.
Very much still within the tin and copper mining territory the coast line was busy with old workings and the remnants of engine towers. Our first walk around the St Agnes head took us to the tower at Towanroath Shaft Engine House, which is high on the cliff top. In behind it lies Wheal Coates, one of the larger ruins. We followed inland for a bit to climb up to St Agnes Beacon prior to returning to the clifftop to walk around St Agnes Head. The scenery on the coastline was once again awesome. We returned to site via St Agnes village, a nice spot.Läs mer
