Delayed and lost - perfect start

    September 4, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

7.07 am, a weird number, for me a sign to wake up, but today wasnt the same as everyday, today we would finally fly to Stockholm and go on our Roadtrip through Sweden. I had been thinking of this moment for the past 3 months. My big reward after having studied almost 24/7 - okay I am exhagerating a tiny bit but you can imagine what I mean. Anyways I got up, got ready and met Nene in front of our house:)
We took a five minute train to the Airport (never been at the airport this fast in my whole life) and were perfectly in time. (Keep this sentence in mind - you won‘t hear it anymore in this blog post…)
So anyways, we checket in & walked to our gate, got coffee and did what people usually do while waiting for the boarding. Then suddendly we noticed the flight got delayed by 50 minutes. We were a bit worried we would miss our connecting flight in Copenhagen but then we said we would just take it as it was and we couldnt change it anyways. 70 minutes later we were sitting in the airplane but had to wait other 40 minutes for it to take off. Even though it made us loose even more time, I got the chance to beat Nene at Quizduell - one of the highlights of the day so far. Let me just point out, this guy is reaaalllyy good at that game (or I am just terribly bad but let‘s pretend it‘s the other option)
So 11:33 our flight took off. During our flight we talked to a flight attendant and asked her for help. She said the information will follow shortly before the arrival so for now we just had to wait. Later on they told us that we could get on the next flight at 2 pm. WOW we had been lucky! So in the end everything had turned out well. Well… as we arrived in Stockholm after a beautiful flight where we could see all over southern Sweden & recognised cities and lakes below us, we walked to the baggage claim. We were already 1 and a half hours later than we should have arrived but we would still make it to the van rental before 5pm if everything went well. HA HA. At the baggage claim Nene‘s bag arrived but mine didnt, yippie, what now? Maybe it would arrive a little later, should we wait? Nope, I knew it wouldnt. First of all I really had the feeling it wouldnt and second of all in said on the pannel that the last baggages were already out.
I mean, how much can possibly go wrong in an airline? We went to a desk where a guy was talking to a man about his lost suitcase, so we waited for that conversation to end only to be told that this wasnt the right desk. So we walked on and found another guy who finally told us where my backpack was: in Copenhagen. He told us they would send it here eventually - what an information. Since we really couldnt do anything about it my anger and worry disappeared and we decided to take a taxi to the camper rental. Even though er were 45 mins late, we still got out Camper which to my delight was automatic:)) First we drove to Lidl to get food for the next couple of days. Our shopping trip was quite fun, we laughed a lot and I almost forgot I had just lost my bag somewhere at the airport in Denmark. Until suddenly I got a message: They had found my backpack and would send it to the Airport Stockholm:) Wohoo, just for fun, knowing they wouldnt get a response, I answered them and asked for more info, which made us laugh even more about it. We decided to drive to Björknas Camping next to a lake, 45 mins from the Airport. The drive there was really pretty, the sun was setting and the tiny red houses decorated the scenery - i was quite amazed and again I forgot about the bag. The camp ground was also a total jackpot, we got in easily through an online page which generated a code, so we could get in. There was a lake, gras fields and Forest all around. We went to the lake but had to escape from mosquitos attacking us. (The mosquito spray was still in Copenhagen back then) in the van we prepared a salad for dinner, since it was already late and went to sleep shortly after:) I was really exhausted. What a day!

    Lost and found

    September 5, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After a calm and rather cold night we woke up to a beautiful sunrise. I coulnt resist and ran to the lake, where I admired the rising sun, the bright colours and enjoyed the warm tickles of the sunrays on my skin, before I had to run back to prevent me from being eaten by thousands of mosquitos.
We ate breakfast, tried out our french press to make coffee and realized that mjölk is not the same as lättfil.
Unfortunately we had bought the latter, which basically is just yogurt and didnt really taste great in our coffee. I dont quite understand why they put different things in the same packaging. I bet all tourists accidentaly bought this lätter yogurt first.
When we were done we cleaned our stuff, took a shower and drove back to the airport to pick up my backpack. They had sent me an email saying I could come pick it up.
Everything went surprisingly well and I got my backpack without any complications. The ROADTRIP could finally start! (And I had clothes again which is also pretty awesome)

    Friendly, kind and glutenfree Sweden

    September 5, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

From the airport we drove to the small town of Nora, which took us about 2 and a half hours. On our way we decided to stop whenever we saw something nice on google maps which was worth checking out. So we went to see a small castle, but the pretty thing about it was actually the lake. The sun was shining. The water was sparkling, to me this was the sweden I had imagined. We also stopped at an ICA Maxi Supermarket and this place, let me tell you, is literally where dreams come true. They have tons of glutenfree products I felt like I had just arrived in paradise. I mean, look at the picture, have you ever seen me this happy;)? We almost emptied half the shelves (just kidding) and went back to our van to finally drive to the small city of Nora. It was already 3 pm so we had a light lunch in our van and then went on a walk. I had seen a coffee place online which looked quite pretty so we walked there. At the café the owners welcomed us warmly and we ordered two cappuccinos. Unfortunately their card machine was broken and we didnt have any cash with us. After trying to make it work for a couple of minutes, they said they would offer us the coffee. We said thank you a thousand times and even offered them swiss francs in case they planned on visiting switzerland one day but they just thanked us and gave us the coffee for free. I stil cant beliebe how kind those people were. We sat down at a table and startet talking to two german people who have been travelling around by hiking from one place to another. Initially they came to sweden by train though. We walked wirh them until the other side of the city and even exchanged phone numbers. Then, Nene and I walked around and went to the „Systembolaget“ the only shops in sweden that sell alcohol. So we bought a bottle of wine and went back to our van. Even though it was already quite late we decided to drive further until the Nationalpark Tiveden. 2 and a half hours and a stunning sunset later we were at the big Vättern lake in the park. It was already quite dark when we arrived at the spot we wanted to stay for the night and since the ground was not even it was rather stressful to park. We did it eventually and went inside the van, where first of all we startet killing hundreds of mosquitos that had come in during our parking trials. We cooked Zuchetti Risotto and opened our wine bottle even though it was already past nine pm. We couldnt see much but we knew our spot was a total jackpot - you‘ll see tomorrow morning:)Read more

    Beautiful Ställplats

    September 6, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We woke up to a beautiful view over the Lake, ate breakfast, went swimming, washed ourselves and fully enjoyed this morning. We drove to Tiveden Nationalpark entrance where we startet a small hike which lead through the woods and along small lakes.
It looked like an enchanted forest. We drove on small streets until Kållandsö and found another very nice Stellpläts which even had a sauna. We cooked pasta for dinner and checked out the sauna. It was a small wooden hut right at the lake with a breathtaking view. An awesome ending of an adventurous day.
-> shorter one today, but we‘ve got so much to see it‘s a bummer to spend time on my phone;)

On the road to the westcoast

    September 7, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

The place we had stayed over night was quite expensive but in my opinion worth the money. As I mentioned yesterday there was a sauna, of course showers, but even a kitchen with dishwasher! What a luxury for us who don‘t even have a dishwasher at home in Zurich:) but except for the facilities the view was also amazing and it was right by the water. Later that morning, after having had breakfast, we headed down the small Pensinsula and arrived at Slott Läckö, a castle at the lake Vänern. We left the van, which we had now named Bro (after the first place we had stayed at) at a parking lot and walked around. The castle was pretty but it honestly looked better from further away, thats why we walked along the lake and admired it from there. The next stop on our Trip were the ship locks. There are many in sweden but we were lucky and stopped at a place where we got to see old ones from the last centuries and modern ones that were still being used. Shortly after we stopped at a café for swedish „fika“ (a break from activity during which people drink coffee, eat cakes or other light snacks, and relax with others.) The place even had glutenfree snacks and the coffee was delicious. Finally we were ready and full of energy for the last bit: the final drive to Smögen.Read more

    Wir mögen Smögen

    September 7, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

As the title says, we liked Smögen from the first moment we saw its colorful houses, when we drove over the rocky hills shortly before reaching the sea. We looked after a parking lot, where we could leave the van and walk around the village only to end up in a shop which had many sports clothes on sale. We ended up buying two rainjackets, and taking funny pictures of us looking like paddington;) The shopowner was very friendly and gave us some recommentadions on restaurants and most important on a small parking lot 5 mins from the towns center where we could park for 12 hours for free. The place was even better than we had expected. After leaving our new clothes in the van, we walked to the village, where we couldnt stop repeating how beautiful it looked. The restaurant the shopowner had recommended, called Samuelsson was right in the citycenter. We decided to order a seafood platter and two glasses of white wine which looked and tasted fresh and amazing. After dinner we visited a light show that took place at the village these days. We payed 15 euros each which was waaayy too much for what it actually was, but we just made fun of it and enjoyed the evening anyways. We hiked on some hills and watched the lightshow from above which made it way more interesting and exciting:) But the most exciting thing was definitely the return home where we found out that the seawater right next to our van was full of bioluminescent plankton! I had rarely seen such a spectacle of nature. However one last mistery remains unsolved… how did we actually find out about the plakton? It‘s up to you to guess;)Read more

    Yearn after Tjörn

    September 8, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Before leaving smögen that morning we went on our first swim in the sea. Our van was parket right at a spot where you could easily get into the water and apparently some locals knew that to, therefore we were not the only ones waking ourselves up in the cold water.
The plan was to drive away from smögen to see Orust and Tjörn and then go a bit further until arriving at a camping about 30 mins from Göteborg. The road first led us to a tiny harbour where we stopped, took a ferry called Neptunus and stayed at the other side where we had a small breakfast and observed the water which was full of fish, jellyfish and shrimps. Afterwards we drove over Orust to Tjörn and saw landscapes that really blew our minds. We got up some hills where we had an awesome view over hundreds of small islands with forests which extended all the way to the sea. Additionally we stopped at two villages at the sea, one prettier than the other, decorated by its white houses with the read roofs and the rocky shores nearby.
In Skärhamn we went into a fish shop and bought salmon which we later cooked for dinner AND salmon nuggets, which I already knew (and loved) from my time in canada. They weren‘t exactly the same but tasted as good as the canadian ones. The camping we went to in the evening was a big one with many people, especially families with children, but also permanent „residents“ whose campers stayed there all season long. It was alright for one night even though I personally prefer sleeping somewhere surrounded by nature. The thoughts behind our night stop there was to be able to wash our towels, which after the sauna started having a quite unpleasant smell. Next to where we parked was a small hike which led to a very beautiful view. We hiked up and went back to start cooking our salmon I had been excited for all day. At first Nene pointed out I had left it too raw but shortly after he admitted that it was very tasty. After cleaning we visited to women from Switzerland, Doris and Rita, who had invited us to their camper for a glass of wine when we had tried to park earlier. We had started talking because they had heard us asking ourselves about the direction in which we should park the van. Anyways we went to their small and cozy camper which actually was a pick up truck which had been converted in a small cabin to live in. We talked for a long time and they told us about several travels they had done, from journeys in southern america to trips through the sahara. It was very interesting and the wine was excellent too:)
(Sorry for probably a couple of spelling and grammar mistakes, sweden is so pretty and exciting that I barely have time to write this blog;))

    God morgon Göteborg!

    September 9, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After a short drive to Göteborg, where we left our car at a park garage because we had heard that many campers standing along the street had been robbed lately, we explored Haga, the old town. There were many shops including pottery and second hand shops. In the second hand shop we tried on funny things and even bought two items. You‘ll probably see us wearing them one day;) We hadnt had breakfast that morning so we went to a glutenfree „baggeri“ which I really had been looking forward to. We tried as many different things as our stomaches allowed. There was a small hill which we hiked to get the view over the city. We went back to Bro (our van) who was waiting for us in the Garage. 296 kilometres and a nap from Nene’s side later we arrived at Kullaberg. In his defence I have to admit that Nene was the one driving out of Göteborg, which had been very exhausting. There were about 50 highway exits and neither our GPS, nor the traffic signs could help us find the way out of this city, so only 3 attempts and 2 wrong exits later we made it on the right road in direction of Malmö. Kullaberg‘s Peninsula was way more touristic than I had expected so instead of following the normal path with the rest of the people to see the view from above we hiked in our Birkenstocks up to a cliff where the view was even better and where we had some more privacy. Originally the plan had been to drive to Lund the same evening to visit the city and to sleep in a camping nearby but as we drove away from Kullaberg nature reserve, we decided we would take it easy and look for a place closer to where we were and check out Lund in the morning. Turns out this was a great decision because on our way we saw a farmers market where we stopped, drank a cocktail and had dinner. (Don’t worry the one that drove didn’t drink alcohol) The food was amazing and our tummies were really satisfied later on. The day finished off with a perfect timing as we arrived at the camping about 10 mins before sunset so we got to see and enjoy it fully. The only thing that bothered me slightly was that they had a disco on the campground which played super loud music until about 2 am. But hey I guess we‘re on holidays and shouldn‘t let that annoy us:)
We fell asleep eventually despite the loud music:)

    Moose stew and blueberry cake

    September 9, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our alarm rang early so that after a good breakfast outside we were ready to leave for Lund, famous for the amount of universities. Since we went there on a Sunday morning it looked quite peaceful and even a bit sleepy. We walked around the park, looked at some old and famous buildings and had a coffee. After we had at walked every street at least twice, we drove to Ystad, a city in the southern part of Sweden in Skåne, where we met Pentti and Britt. They showed us around in the small city starting off with the monastery garden. It was very interesting too see, smell and even taste some of the herbs the monks used for making medicine. They showed us the main streets, some typical old buildings and a church, while we were talking and catching up on the past year(s) we hadn’t seen eachother. We were invited to stay at their lovely home over night and have dinner with them. Pentti and Britt prepared moose stew with potatoes which I had never had before and was absolutely delicious. For dessert she had prepared a very tasty blueberry cake, of course glutenfree:) We talked for the rest of the evening and went to sleep in our camper which we were allowed to park in their beautiful garden.Read more

  • Day 8

    Mystic Aspö

    September 11, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After a good night sleep under a sky full of stars Pentti and Britt spoiled us with an amazing breakfast that consisted of omelettes, veggies and self made carrot and oat bread. After getting ready we went to Kivik and Vitemölla, two small fisher villages right at the sea next to where the two of them live. When we got back to their place at about 11 am we thanked them for their hospitality and left for Ahus, where we went straight into the next systembolag to buy wine for our next dinner:)
We made our way to Karlskrona, Pentti had told us about, and took the ferry to Aspö. After 25 minutes we arrived on the Island which was covered with fog. Eventually the fog lifted and we could see some rays of sun in between the treetops. It looked very mystic and a bit creepy. We drove around the Island with our van but stopped several times at viewpoints or small harbours.
After taking the ferry back to Karlskrona we refuelled Bro (the van) and drove all the way to Öland. We stopped twice: once at a river where they fished for salmon and once at Kalmar to eat at Max, a famous burger Place like BK or McDonalds. I hadnt had a Burger in ages so when I heard they had a glutenfree option, I had to get one. We arrived on Öland at the Ställplats in a harbour at 9:30 when it was already dark. We couldnt find a toiled and shower, nor some kind of „check in“ so we just parked our camper, brushed our teeth and fell asleep right next to the sea.
