After two months working in WHOI, Woodshole, I took the bus back to Boston, where I met with my friend André. In Boston, we went to the USS Constitution, had breakfast and went to a Mountain Equipment store. In the evening, we met with our friend Stefanie and had dinner.Baca selengkapnya

    1–2 Jun 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

On the second day, we had to get from Boston to Seabrook. Close to that, we got our camper and immediately continued down the road to the Promised Land State Park in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we stopped in Olive Garden for lunch. After an 6h drive, we were pretty tired!
On the next day, we went to Sunset Hill Shooting Range. Here I could finally achieve my goal to shoot a revolver! It was fun to try out, but nothing that I would do every day, haha.
Afterwards we went to the Lake at the State Park, enjoying the boat trip there, before heading back to the camper and cooking dinner. In front of the toilets was a little toad!

    Shenandoah National Park Day 1-2

    3–4 Jun 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We arrived at the Visitor Center of Shenandoah National Park after another 6h drive. There we got a map and planned our next steps. We already did a little 30min walk to a viewpoint and later on got to the Big Meadow Campground. We did try to cook over the fire, but unfortunately it wasn't hot enough, so we had to transfer everything back to the kitchen of the camper!
On the next day, we headed to more hikes, enjoying the amazing forest, the wide landscapes and peaceful roads with the occasional dear blocking it. Quiet nice!

    Shenandoah National Park Day 3-4

    4–5 Jun 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We headed more down to Loft Mountain, a beautiful Campground, where we could wash our clothes. Around there were also a few hikes, though we had to battle with bad weather, either being to rainy or too humid, sweating through our freshly washed clothes faster than we thought. Still, it was nice and I still enjoyed evey minute here!Baca selengkapnya

  • Last Day in Shenandoah NP

    6 Juni 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

On our last day, we did some more hikes, such as the Big Run Loop. The weather was really humid, but it was still very enjoyable. The Trail would take us partially to the Appalachian Trail, where we would encounter people that are hiking the trail right now (they have a little flag with the sign of the Appalachian Trail on their backpack, showing that they are taking on this big challenge to walk the length of the whole Appalachian Trail).
We kept joking that, because I am one of the fast hikers, I would be doing the whole Appalachian Trail in two weeks (average is ca. 6 months) and we were laughing while André said things like "they won't see Kayley coming" (because I would have to be inhumanly fast to actually complete this trail in 2 weeks). Or as Stefanie said, after I am done, it isn't the Appalachian Trail but the Appalachian Highway (since my speed would blast away any trees that are in my way).
We also found a snake on the trail. Since it was in the middle of the trail, we took a stick and pushed it more in the bushes, so no one would step on it. The snake was rather confused, I think.
In the evening, we packed up. Sadly, it was our last day in the NP, though we would go to a National Forest in the morning.

  • Seneca Rocks

    7–8 Jun 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

And so we went to Seneca Rocks in the Monongahela National Forest. We went straight for the visitor center, where we could go on a easy hike up to Seneca Rocks. Up there we could see down the valley. Our Camp was near but hidden among the trees.
We camped at the Seneca Shadows Campground and the next day, we decided to check out the Seneca Caverns. They were interesting and beautiful. It was a guided tour and we were the only foreign tourists, the other ones were all fromn somewhere of the US. Here we actually met our first true republican, a man with a gun on his belt and managing to disrupt the tour with not knowing how to stop talking. The tour guide was very brave, trying to get his fun facts through, but as soon as he would say something like "do you see the animals on these walls?", the republican would chime in and say "there were also animals on the arch of Noah in the bible". The republican also said that before the tour, everybody should sign a waiver and state if they are republican or liberal and if they are liberal, they shouldn't be allowed here (because liberals are bad).
We were really surprised hearing this kind of opinion. But we didn't say anything while we were there. On our way back to the camp, we did try our best to imitate is broad american accent by saying "I sure hope there ain't any damn liberals down there (in the cave)".
    Yeah...
We did go to another cavern (Smoke Hole Cavern). Which was also nice, but at some point, a cavern is a cavern (a wet cave, by defintion).
Then we went back to Seneca Shadows, which was our second and last night here.

    Last Day in Nature

    9 Juni 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

In the morning, Stefanie was too slow getting up, so I decided to remove the bed and throw the beddings at her in hope it will make her get up, though I only buried her under the cushions.
We went up to one last hike in the Seneca Rocks area, where we were greeted by rain and decided to make our way back before lightning would hit us.
Then we went to the Horseshoe Recreation Campground in West Virginia, a small campground in a valley. We were the only people there (except the friendly woman and her husband which were the campground caretakers). There we walked along the river, bathing our feet and enjoying our last day in Nature (next two days, we will just be driving up to Boston again). We lighted a fire, tried to burn some of the chopped tree the caretaker of the campground said we could try to burn (did not work) and played some cards.
In the night here in the valley, it actually got really cold and in the morning, when I would make tea and go outside to drink it and read my book until the other two were awake, I did not leave the camper this time but just quietly stayed in bed, wrapped up in my blanket and jacket.
It was very nice at the campground but I think we were all eager to leave and get into the sun.

    The Last Days

    10–12 Jun 2024, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The last days went by very fast. We went up to Pennsylvania again, a 6h ride. There we stayed for the night. We even managed to go for a swim at the lake of our camp ground (which was the same as last time, Promised Land State Park).
Then second day, we drove another 6 hours to our next Campground, which was in the Massachusetts State Park. There we really just stayed for the night. Next morning, we drove 1h back to the RV Rental close to Seabrook. We did have some trouble finding a store that fills up the propane gas tank (we had to bring it back full). But once we found it, they filled it up for us pretty quick and the whole thing cost us mere five dollars. We went on to the rental, brought back the RV, booked an Uber to Seabrook C&J Bus Station and got just the last three tickets for the next bus taking us to the airport.
And then we went home, which was the end of our travels. But it was quiet a nice time here and I really did enjoy hiking in the Shenandoah National Park.
Also my time at Woodshole (I worked at an institute there for two months, for work) was wonderful and I can leave the USA now with some fun memories.
