    Fast paced 5 hour tour with Patrick - French. / Canadian living in Tokyo. Lots of sights to see, great to get a locals perspective. Lunch at Asadori, traditional rice kettle lunch ( AW tuna to be different !). Bought a Japanese fish knife., ‘square’ omelette pan and some extra long cooking chopsticks.Les mer

    Cable car trip ( Hakone gondola) to the top, sulphurous ambience; steam and sulphur pong.A bit windy suppose we were halfway up a mountain.Nobody fancied the black eggs cooked in sulphur. Followed by high speed sail across Lake Ashi in a pseudo pirate galleon ( a bit cheesy). Bullet train ( Shinkansen) back to Tokyo, bit of a jam as on unreserved seating.Les mer

    Transfer to the ship, Yokohama is an attractive looking port. Our arrival / boarding procedure was very swift. Celebrity Millennium is 20 years old, had a major facelift 5 years ago, overall pretty good. Looks even better after 2 glasses of champagne…Les mer

    Trip by local train to the woodblock museum then 25min walk, lovely display of prints. Mike and Karen bought a book to collect stamps at each temple they visited. Tried some fried black fish from a local store, ‘interesting’. Bimble around the shops, met some interesting ‘cosplay’ characters.Les mer

    Trip around Osaka, slight delay as only one gang plank functioning. Andrew eager to buy a Toyo toolbox ( made here) took a while to find the shop; Linda, Mike and Karen very supportive. Then off to Castle, more impressive exterior than climb to 8th floor. Legs flagging so taxi ( 2000 yen ) to the Dotuburi shopping area where we saw ‘the running man’ and ate a ‘ cook it yourself’ spicy noodle and veg/ pork/other stir fry. Back onboard for a well earned negroni ( or 2 Linda )Les mer

    Quick day trip to Kyoto, caught the bullet train 15min! Group split Mike and Linda headed north , Andrew & Karen south east. Lots of sites / temples / shops +++

    Too windy !!! 50kt winds , captain tried 4 times to dock…..as we know best to give up rather than end up in your trunks. So chill out day ( good for all of us )… getting into ‘cruise’ routine ( eat>>drink>>eat>> drink )Les mer

    Early arrival , quick breakfast ready to roll. Caught taxi to the memorial garden, serene, sobering memorial to the 200,000 who died in the battle of Okinawa 1945. USA still have a large ‘ guarding’ presence on the island, 30,000 troops. Then back shopping on the main strip / ‘burger’ for lunch.. Mike made a sharp exit back to the ship. Decided to skip the queue back to the ship caught a cheeky taxi 600yen.Les mer

  • Kumamoto ( kind of )

    32deg31.60 N, 130deg32.17 E, docked at Yatsushiro about 1 hour away from Kumamoto town. Welcomed by an impressive electrical storm, at least we aren’t near any large metal objects 🛳️. Actually off ship at 0715 then bullet train to Kumamoto, quick coffee then tram to the gardens. Lots of ☔️. Transparent umbrella at 500yen a real bargain! Gardens stunning, lovely coffee whilst we sheltered in the old tea house. Linda bought her vintage green kimono so all happy.Les mer

  • Jeju Island South Korea

    Arrived at 0900, a little overcast, picked up by Mr Yang Gwang Bo our driver, speedy, jerky dash across the island, first stop UNESCO site volcanic crater, Seongsan Ilchulbong, climbed up to the crater rim impressive views. ( Andrew topped up on his tourist tat buying a pumice stone figurine), then off to the heritage village which is a recreation of ‘ye olde Jeju’, then up to the local Dongmun market; full of oranges. Back on board, Linda and Mike filled my room with birthday balloons!Les mer

    Back in Japan, have to pass through immigration again. Windy, dry looks like might brighten up this pm. Taxi to the Sengan-en gardens. Japanese lunch pork Katsu with rice, pickles and salad. Washed down with a cool beer. Mike had warm sake. Impressive gardens over 15 acres, interspersed with tasteful shops. Imposing view of the active Sakurajima volcano…. thankfully not churning out any ash or lava today.Les mer

    Lazy day at sea, Linda and Mike attended talk by the captain, Andrew and Karen kept with tradition and enjoyed the 3 course lunch with wine. Enjoyable final dinner, ever smiling waiter Garry and our Serbian sommelierJulian, who clearly had a glint in her steely Eastern European eye for Mike…..! ( what happens on the cruise stays on the cruise )Les mer
