Started the Tongariro Northern Circuit but couldn't complete it due to bad weather. Walked from Whakapapa to Mangatepopo hut on the first day and waited in the hut for a day for the weather to clear and then hiked to emerald lakes on day three and back to Whakapapa on day four. Stayed one night at the Chateau Tongariro. The first waterfall is Taranaki Falls and the last waterfall is Gollum's Pool (Tawahi Falls).

Five day hike staying at Central Whirinaki hut, Upper Te Hoe hut, Mangakahika hut and Moerangi hut. It was due to rain heavily on day five so we spent an extra night at Moerangi and had fine weather the other days. It was very difficult on day two with the climb up to Upper Te Hoe hut taking over ten hours which meant we had to finish in the dark. Although it was really nice old forest. We saw the Whio duck and heard dear calling in the valleys.Read more

Napier, Shine Falls and Lake Tutira campsite.
We tried to go to Mangatutu Hot Spring but the river ford was up to the body of the van so we didn't cross even though we saw a mini make it!

  • The Pinnacles

    July 4, 2022 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

This was an overnight walk to the Pinnacles which are lava plugs from eroded volcanos. The hut is about an hour before the summit so we hiked up in the morning for the sunrise. The last shot has the ladders superimposed because I can only upload 10 pictures :)

This walk went through an old 500m long mine shaft which has some glow worms inside. A little bit scary because we forgot the torches🫣
