  • Sunderland and Around

    19 Eylül 2023, İngiltere ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We were treated to a private viewing and meeting with Ian from the Sunderland Maritime Heritage. Such a committed group who are preserving the rich ship building and merchant sailing heritage of Sunderland. They have built numerous replica boats. They have restored others. They were hoping to restore the clipper City of Adelaide, but a group from Adelaide pinched it. Importantly have a very extensive library. There were several references to ships of the Elders fleet, Torrens particularly and the Sanderson name appears at times.

We dropped by the The Saltgrass Inn, I'd be confident by great grandfather's generation had a drink here. He was born here. He went to sea doing eleven return voyages between various english ports and Adelaide as skipper of the Collingrove for what was to become Elders. Three of his brothers also held master's tickets.

Another Vera stop at Seaham with lunch at the Black Truffle cafe.

  • Train to Cambridge

    20 Eylül 2023, İngiltere ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Wednesday. Met by Anne and Tom at the station. Checked into Newnham College, a very interesting college history, a college with a focus on women.

The college was founded in 1871 by a group organising Lectures for Ladies, members of which included philosopher Henry Sidgwick and suffragist campaigner Millicent Garrett Fawcett. It was the second women's college to be founded at Cambridge, following Girton College. The College celebrated its 150th anniversary[5] throughout 2021 and 2022.

Walked around Cambridge, briefly visited the Fitzwilliam museum. Dinner at the Red Bull Newnham near the college. Got a little lost in the dark in the college grounds, thanks google.

  • Buckler's Hard, in the New Forest

    25 Eylül 2023, İngiltere

Visited Buckler's Hard on the Beaulieu River that follows into The Solent and is part of the Beaulieu Estate. Shipbuilding commenced in the early eighteenth century.

Henry Adams, a master shipwright, was sent from Deptford Dockyard to Buckler's Hard in 1744 by the Admiralty to oversee the building. Over the following sixty years, Adams would supervise the building of 43 Royal Navy ships, including three that fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Horatio Nelson's favourite ship HMS Agamemnon.

During World War II, the village was used to build motor torpedo boats, and the river was a base for hundreds of landing craft for the Normandy invasion, Operation Overlord.

We had a beer in the Master Builders hotel and later. Tea and scones at the Captain's table.

Quick look around Lymington and drive through the New Forest along Ornamental drive via the Boulderwood deer sanctuary.

  • Greenwich market, Cutty Sark and Smithfi

    30 Eylül 2023, İngiltere ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

John Flintham drove us into London be interesting to see what we can fit in.

We hit the Greenwich Markets first. We sat for the best UK coffee so far at Ideal Espresso, before exploring the stalls. The stall quality was good and the range broad. Overall a top market. Lunch at Goddard in Greenwich, delightful Jellied eels and Fuller's London Pride.

We paused for a light lunch, Jellied eels and a Fuller's London Pride at Goddard at Greenwich. More stalls then the Cutty Sark, this is very well presented with lots of activities for kids.

Next we tracked across the Thames to investigate Smithfield Market, where Ripples forbears originated. Found the story of the torture and execution of William Wallace and the monument across the road.

Flintham family dinner at Côte Covent garden and caught up with the intrepid Ian White after his ride around Morocco on a GS1250.

  • Eurostar to Bruges

    4 Ekim 2023, Belçika ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Tuesday 3/10 was the Eurostar trip from St Pancras to Brussels. The one hour train to Bruges was entertaining, we met an Australian/Belgium girl born in Japan and about to study in Germany. She was on her way to Bruges to steal towels and sheet from grandma. The beef stew was very flavoursome, Anne ask what was in it, they produce a beer specifically for cooking. We couldn't find it the market on Wednesday.

Market Wednesday, food and wonderful flowers. The local cafe's are a little slow, but we did get coffee and croissant before our excellent two hour walking tour, this was extremely informative and a little tiring.

Light lunch, home made tomato soup and a Zot beer. Walked out to and around Minniewater. The water way is very picturesque. Back through the Christmas shops.

Best dinner was in the paper thin carpaccio a real pleasure. At Republic.

  • Bruges, boat tours, belfrey, windmills

    5 Ekim 2023, Belçika ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Started the day with a visit to the local deli, lovely couple very patient, there was less rush at the cafe for coffee and croissant.

Boat cruises are really good. A different and delightful perspective and beaut photographic opportunities.

Climbed the 366 steps of the Belfry. Needed a beer after that. The Carillion is spectacular as is it's playing.

Our picnic besideone one of the windmills was delightful. Zot local beer and the excellent products from the deli visit. Duck pate and the ham were highlights. The grain breads were beaut.

Hot chocolate experience, interesting a one off for me. The Uruguay dark chocolate was their darkest and delightful.

The day was completed with a free harp concert. This was very interesting. Luc Vanlaere has harps from around the world. He created the most interesting harmonies across a number of instruments.

Early night to get up for the train to Nimes.

Nimes has a welcoming boulevard that runs from the station to the historic centre. There was a flamenco performance at the town end.
After we checked in, changed into shorts and hot weather clothing for the 29 degrees. We walked around looking for a cold drink. There are numerous cafes in the streets and squares around the arena and throughout the town

Dinner at The Palmier was very nice a dozen oysters and paella. They even gave us a free dessert. And lots of chilled water, very hospitable.

The market Les Halles is indoors and large, all the produce looked great. We purchased from a number of sellers, croissants, baguette, sausage, cheese Comté, fruit and veg. Heirloom tomatoes, figs, lettuce,...

Toured the arena, this is very well presented with a detailed audio description. Had a picnic lunch at the side of the canal that leads to the gardens. After lunch we walk through the gardens, Jardin de la Fontaine, enjoying its fountains and the Temple of Diana. Citron sorbet and coffee ice cream before visiting the Maison Carrée. Beer o'clock. John, trekked back the the gardens to the Tour Magne and back across to the Porte de France.

Dinner was back to The Palmier, this time the seafood platter; fresh oysters, fresh mussels, prawns and sea snails. You can keep the sea snails. Followed by a very nice Camargue bull stew a local speciality.
