    Barcelona

    After 22 hours we arrived , we had a flight Sydney to Singapore, a layover in Singapore and then through to Barcelona. The flight from Singapore to Barcelona was 14 hours. Such a long flight. Our driver met us at the airport and got as smoothly into our hotel. We had a shower and a nap. Got moving and just started walking towards the city center. Joanne was in awe of the pastry shops but Kel gluten free was emerging as a drama for something light to eat, it seemed everywhere we looked was sandwich and pastries. Finally we got a risotto and a sandwich cafe. After which we headed on down to La Rambla, and had a wine at placa de Catalunya. Wandering down until we got to Port Pell, the marina of the city. We were stuffed and it was still early arvo , jet lagged off to bed we got up around 7 pm a short walk for dinner, and back to bed.もっと詳しく

    Barcelona day 2 walking tour

    Joanne and I began our day with a walk along La Rambla, soaking up the energy of Barcelona’s most iconic boulevard. Not much happening at this time of the morning but we did ducked into the colourful Boqueria Market for a quick look (and a tempting snack). From there, we made our way into the Gothic Quarter, wandering through narrow, stone-lined laneways full of history and character.

    We soon reached the Barcelona Cathedral—an awe-inspiring Gothic masterpiece—where we admired its intricate facade and peaceful courtyard. After a short coffee break nearby, we grabbed a taxi to our first Gaudí stop: the spectacular Sagrada Família. Its soaring spires and detailed carvings were even more impressive in person.

    Next, we headed to Park Güell, where we wandered among playful mosaic benches, colourful columns, and panoramic city views. To cap off the day, we visited Gaudí’s incredible city houses—Casa Batlló and Casa Milà—where his imagination truly ran wild.     Montserrat Monastery Tour & Port Pell

    Today, Joanne and I stepped away from the bustle of Barcelona and joined a group tour to the stunning Montserrat Monastery, nestled high in the Catalan mountains. The scenery was breathtaking—soaring cliffs, panoramic views, and a peaceful silence that wrapped around the entire site. We explored the world-famous Black Madonna, admired exquisite ancient artwork, and felt the spiritual energy of the place.

    One of the highlights was taking the funicular train to the top, which offered spectacular views over the monastery, across to the Pyrenees near the French border, and even as far as Barcelona. It was a perfect moment of perspective and wonder.

    After returning to the city, we found a cozy spot for lunch and enjoyed a Turkish-style meal—grilled meats, crisp salad, and a glass of sangria. A short nap was in order before heading out again, this time to Port Pell. We wandered the marina, taking in the boats, sea breeze, and golden light of early evening.     A Day in Tarragona & Priorat

    This morning, Joanne and I were picked up from our hotel by Francisca, our friendly and professional driver. She whisked us away from the hustle of Barcelona and into the calm, coastal charm of Tarragona.

    Tarragona was our first stop—a stunning city perched on the Mediterranean, steeped in history and character. As we wandered through its ancient Roman ruins, we were awestruck by the scale and preservation of the amphitheatre, aqueducts, and timeworn walls. You could almost hear the echoes of history. It’s no surprise that these treasures are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    After soaking in the sights, we joined locals in a picturesque square for a glass of Vermouth—a sweet Catalan tradition we quickly embraced. It was one of those slow, golden moments: the gentle sun, cool drink in hand, and the hum of conversation around us.

    From there, Francisca drove us inland toward the renowned Priorat wine region. The scenery shifted dramatically—rolling vineyards, steep terraces, and sweeping views of the Montsant mountains greeted us around every bend. We stopped for lunch at an elegant winery of Moutrubi , where the wines were certainly fine... though maybe not quite to my palate. That said, I drank every drop offered—so make of that what you will!

    A Day of Surprises

    Today started with a smooth hotel pickup and drop-off at the Barcelona train station—then the chaos began! The station was packed, and after lining up to board, we discovered our printed tickets had been canceled. Thankfully, I had the digital version on my phone, which had been updated. Crisis averted—we made it onto the train for a scenic 2.5-hour journey to Madrid.

    Madrid greeted us with more crowds and energy. We met our driver Manuel, who took us to our Airbnb. That’s when the next drama hit—no access info, no key, no idea how to get in! After a few calls and some help from a Spanish-speaking housekeeper, we finally made it inside.

    The apartment? Let’s call it quirky. We’re tucked into the attic with sloped ceilings, a crawl-in kitchen and bathroom, and a head-bumping hazard at every turn. But hey, it’s charming—and the location is fantastic.

    We ended the day with a walk through the neighborhood to get our bearings.

    Had something to eat, we are finding that the food is so expensive here, so we opted for the supermarket as we can rustle up our own grub in our dwarfs kitchen. Plate of chips and a small pasta with a glass of wine and a soft drink $55 Aud

    Our cultural stroll continued as we made our way up to Parque del Retiro—once the private grounds of the Spanish monarchy. The serenity of the Crystal Palace and the grandeur of the park’s leafy boulevards were a perfect contrast to the bustling city streets.

    Toledo

    A 1.5 klm walk from hotel to the train station a 30-minute train ride to Toledo the 1 st capital of Spain ain. Upon arrival, we discovered a beautiful train station where we met our guide Laura who took us in a cab up to overlook the entire city and river below, before entering the old city to tour around the mesmerizing landmarks of the ancient Toledo.

    We walk through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, explored the fortified city walls and saw some of the famous UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval architecture, including the 13th-century Cathedral of Toledo and Synagogue.

    Joanne grabbed some Damascene jewelry, which is iron with inlaid gold and Picasso style Don Quijote T-shirt as a memento of our visit.

    We enjoyed lunch and a cold beverage before walking 1.5 klm through the Alcantara gate and bridge to cross the river to the train station for our return to Madrid.    もっと詳しく

    Madrid Old Town: Mice and Majesty

    Our morning began in Madrid’s historic heart, where our guide César led us through winding *calles* streets, steeped in centuries of stories. The scent of freshly baked pastries wafted from every corner—temptation was unavoidable! At the bustling Mercado de San Miguel surrendered to Spain’s flavors, and sampled the cheese.

    Ah, yes—**El Ratón Pérez**! 🐭✨ César pointed out a tiny plaque near **Calle Arenal**, where Madrid’s beloved tooth-collecting rodent supposedly lived.

    Then, grandeur: the **Almudena Cathedral**, its neo-Gothic spires reaching skyward, a marriage of solemnity and splendor. But nothing prepared us for the **Royal Palace**. For **1.5 hypnotic hours**, we wandered halls dripping in gold, frescoes, and crystal chandeliers—the throne room alone could humble Versailles.

    Segovia and Avila

    Today was an adventure beyond the bustling streets of Madrid. We set off early, transferred to a meeting point, and embarked on a journey to two of Spain’s most enchanting cities—Segovia and Ávila. By a double Decker bus.

    Our first stop was Segovia, a city steeped in history and architectural wonders.

    The Alcázar of Segovia was nothing short of mesmerizing. This medieval fortress, with its fairy-tale turrets and imposing presence, looked like it had been plucked straight from a Disney movie. Walking through its halls, you can imagine the echoes of knights and royalty who once roamed its corridors.

    After soaking in the grandeur of the Alcázar, we wandered through Segovia’s charming streets, eventually arriving at the Roman aqueduct, a true marvel of ancient engineering. Stretching 728 meters in length and standing 28.5 meters high at its tallest point , this aqueduct has stood the test of time, serving the city’s infrastructure until 1976.

    Seeing it up close was breathtaking, a reminder of the ingenuity of Roman architects.

    Next, we made our way to Ávila, a city wrapped in the embrace of its 11th-century fortified walls. Walking along these ancient walls, which span about 1.5 to 2 kilometers, was an unforgettable experience. The Romanesque architecture, the towering gates, and the sheer history embedded in every stone made Ávila feel like a portal to the past.

    We even came across the gate marking the northern route of the Camino de Santiago, this was significant for us as we will start our pilgrimage in a few days .

    After a day filled with history and exploration, we decided to skip any more church visits and grabbed a beer before we hopped back on the bus. On our way home, we made a special stop at a location that served as inspiration for the Castles and fortress wall in Game of Thrones

    Madrid to Monforte de Lemos

    High-Speed train from Madrid to Palencia where we had to change trains, we dragged our suitcases underneath the platform to the other side which was later found to be unnecessary and we could have stayed on the same platform we arrived from there we went to monforte a mountain mountainous climb to our hotel here at monforte which is an old monastery the monastery of St. Vincent de pino it originates in the 17th century neoclassic style.     Monforte de lemos

    This morning, we woke to a scene straight out of a dream. The village of Montforte de Lemos was completely covered in fog a sea of cloud stretching to the horizon. From our room at the Parador de Monforte, perched high in the old Monastery of San Vicente do Pino, we were quite literally above the clouds. It felt like the world had disappeared beneath us.

    The Parador itself is a treasure — a former Benedictine monastery with origins dating back centuries, transformed into a heritage hotel in 1928. Its stone corridors and quiet courtyards echo with history and offer the most serene start to the day.

    After a delicious buffet breakfast — truly one of the best we've had — we set off on foot, descending from the hilltop into the fog-covered village below.

    Just outside the Parador, we met two lovely women, Carmen and Pell, who greeted us with warmth and offered to guide us into town. They led us through Montforte’s Jewish Quarter, winding through cobbled backstreets rich with stories. Along the way, we chatted, laughed, and learned a little more about this beautiful corner of Galicia.

    True to their word, they brought us to the best coffee shop in town — and it did not disappoint. We shared a coffee, some conversation, and a lovely moment of connection.

    Joanne had some retail therapy and got some shoes and a blouse, both will be treasures.

    Our Camino Begins

    In February 2024, after facing a tough season of illness, Joanne decided it was time for something more—a new chapter built on purpose, strength, and healing. She asked me, Kel, to walk beside her on a journey both symbolic and real. And so, our Camino de Santiago began.

    Today, we set off from Sarria, climbing the steep stone stairway of Rua Major and winding our way through the quiet charm of the old quarter. The path led us through lush woodlands and green fields, over rivers and alongside railway tracks.

    We passed the village of Barbadelo and the hamlets of Baxan and Leiman, knowing these were the final stops before the long uphill stretch.

    It was getting hot and with each step the challenge began. Joanne walked with fierce determination, This is not just a walk. It’s our shared way of reclaiming health, love, and life itself.

    Portomarin to Ventas de N

    A beautiful, cool morning greeted us as we left Portomarin, beginning a steady 700-meter climb through peaceful woodlands and quiet country roads.

    We crossed the Mino Basin and passed through the small village of Toxibo, before enjoying a well-earned break at a cozy roadside café in Gonzar—an ideal mid-morning stop. Over coffee and tea, Joanne shared a lovely FaceTime call with Karen Ferg, a warm moment that added joy to our journey.

    Refreshed, we pressed on through the tranquil uphill path toward Castromaior. At the peak, we were rewarded with sweeping views of the countryside—one of those moments that fills the soul.

    Camino Day 4 – Chill n Eucalyptus

    We woke to the coldest morning yet on our Camino, with a forecast high of just 14°C. Kel, caught off guard without a skivvy, layered up the best he could—long-sleeve thermal singlet under a T-shirt—making for a very “creative” Camino look.

    After breakfast, we were transferred back to the trail to continue our walk from Ventas de Narón to Palas de Rei. The path gently undulated through peaceful woodland , farm lane ways with a peaceful countryside. One of the loveliest surprises of the day was spotting a tall eucalyptus tree—the first of its kind in the area, planted by a monk in the early 1900s using seeds from Australia. Its familiar scent brought a wave of comfort, a little reminder of home.

    We arrived in Palas de Rei earlier than expected, with no coffee stop along the way. Luckily, we found our hotel, grabbed a quick coffee nearby, and Kel picked up a much more suitable long-sleeve top for the chill. We wandered into a local deli, gathered a simple picnic of meats and cheeses, and ate together in the town square—just the two of us, enjoying the quiet.

    Palas de Rei to Melide – 13.2 km

    We began the day walking and elevation of 150 metres in a klm, which we commented to each other is getting easier. Then into a good paced walk through peaceful woodland and lush valleys, along an undulating pathway .
    Around the 4 km mark, we stopped for coffee, where Kel struck up a great chat with a group of young English travellers curious about life and work in Australia.
    A few kilometers later, we caught up with Antoinette, and Aussie from perth, whom we chatted with before and enjoyed another round of coffee and tea, and shared the rest of the journey into Melide together.

    Along the way, we passed sleepy hamlets—some almost abandoned—accompanied only by the occasional cat, dog, or wandering chicken. We came across a manicured garden. Along the way there were beautiful, little bursts of care and colour in otherwise quiet villages.

    After lunch and crossing the medieval bridge into Melide, the final stretch felt a little ordinary, but the day was full of simple joys, good company, and shared moments. We caught up with Antoinette again at dinner, rounding off another rich day on the Camino.    もっと詳しく

    Melide to Arzúa

    We began today’s 14km stretch in a light, persistent drizzle—more of a misty fizz than a downpour, but enough to dampen clothes and spirits early on. The path was undulating, with several sharp climbs that tested our legs and lungs. At times, the terrain seemed to rise just to challenge us, and challenge us it did.

    Joanne, never one to shy away from honesty, voiced the frustrations the rain brought—wet shoes, slippery ground, and that slow, creeping chill. But what stood out more than anything was her resilience. Despite everything, she kept going, step after determined step, pushing through the discomfort and choosing to stay the course. She should feel immensely proud—today wasn’t easy, but she didn’t let the rain win.

    Along the way, we passed through quiet hamlets and tree-lined tracks, where the mist hung low and made everything feel hushed and ancient. The forests seemed greener, the stone walls more moss-covered, and the occasional glimpse of a Galician farmhouse felt like a reward for our effort.

    Arzúa to Salceda – The Convergence and t

    Today, we walked once more in the soft, drizzling rain, making our way from Arzúa to Salceda. The trail was noticeably busier—Arzúa is the point where the French and Spanish Camino routes meet, and we could feel the energy lift with the growing crowd of pilgrims from all directions.

    Along the way, I (Kel) met Tony, a cheerful Pom who began his Camino at St. Jean Pied de Port. Naturally, we got chatting about cricket—ashes, old rivalries, and shared laughs. But more than that, Tony spoke about the four stages of the Camino body, mind, soul, and heart, each one reflecting a different part of the pilgrim’s journey. Joanne smiled, and I wholeheartedly agreed when he said stage one is the body, reflecting on day 1 from Sarria.

    And yet, despite the weather and the weariness, there was a quiet joy in our walk today. Joanne and I found comfort in the rhythm of the road, side by side under the soft drizzle. We shared peaceful moments beneath the eucalyptus canopy—glances, smiles, and the kind of silence that speaks volumes.

    Today marked our third consecutive day walking in the rain. Even with a later start at 9 a.m., the drizzle never let up. At just 13 degrees, the cold crept in, and with it, a sense of repetition. The path from Salceda to O Pedrouzo—while beautiful in parts—felt more like a mental challenge than a spiritual one.

    We had expected to be shifting into the soul or even the heart stage of our Camino by now, but the constant grey skies and wet gear have kept us firmly in the “mind” phase. The mental endurance is real—step by step, we’re pushing through. And yet, in between the roadside stretches, the trails that dipped into the forest gave us small pockets of joy—softer ground, sheltering trees, and a quiet that reminded us why we’re walking.

    This afternoon, we’re resting at Cabañas Vila Sen Vento, a lovely oasis tucked away just outside O Pedrouzo. Surrounded by trees and a sense of calm, it’s a warm, welcome change from the wet road. The cabins are beautifully set up, offering comfort and space to breathe.

    The Final Steps (10.6km)

    Day 10: Lavacolla to Santiago de Compostela –

    Our final day on the Camino began with a steady uphill climb from Lavacolla to the high point of the day at Villamaior.

     As we made our way down into the city, the transition from forest paths to paved streets gave us the real sense that we were arriving.

    About a kilometre out, the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela came into view—an emotional and surreal moment that confirmed our journey was nearly complete. Passing through the final gate and descending the stairs into the grand plaza, we were overcome with pride and accomplishment.

    Joanne, especially, was moved to tears—an emotional release from the challenges and purpose that brought us here. This journey was never just about the walk; it was a testament to resilience, healing, and shared strength.

    We lingered in the plaza, soaking in the moment, taking photos, and holding onto that magical feeling. After receiving our compostelas, ( credentials ) and checking into our hotel, we lined up for the Pilgrim’s Mass, hoping to witness the famous Botafumeiro.     Santiago: A Day of Rest and Exploration

    After our emotional arrival yesterday, today was a gentle exhale—a day to rest, explore, and soak in the beauty of Santiago de Compostela.

    We began our morning with a quiet visit to the Cathedral. Standing before it, we were struck by its ornate grandeur and deep sense of history. Inside, we made our way through the crypt of the Apostle St. James, a humbling experience, and also crossed behind the altar—a rare and special perspective. One of the highlights was discovering a hidden gem within the cathedral: the most breathtaking chapel, rich in detail and reverence. To our delight, we also see the Botafumeiro, the giant incense thurible, although not swinging.

    The afternoon was filled with lighter moments as we wandered the cobbled streets in search of the perfect Camino t-shirt and a few keepsakes to take home. We enjoyed a delicious lunch out, then explored the historic Parador Hotel—taking our time to enjoy the space and snap a few cheerful photos to mark the day.

    The evening brought reunion and reflection as we caught up with our fellow pilgrims—Antoinette, Louise, and Vince. We shared stories over dinner and enjoyed one last walk through the softly lit streets of Santiago.

    London Days

    Day One – Gardens, Markets & Kindness Underground

    Our first day in London welcomed us with sunshine—a rare but perfect way to begin exploring. We left our hotel and crossed the iconic Tower Bridge, soaking up the sweeping city views, coffee at Hays Gallery, before arriving at the Borough Markets.

    After the markets, we caught the Tube to Kew Gardens, where we explored the stunning glasshouses, took in the lush tropical and desert environments, and enjoyed a light lunch in the café. The highlight was the treetop walk, which gave us a new perspective over the gardens.

    From Kew, we wandered riverside toward Chiswick, a peaceful stroll beside the Thames. Getting back to Tower Hill on the Tube proved a little tricky, but we were rescued by a kind schoolboy and a young lady who helped us find our way. A simple reminder of how generous strangers can be.

    Day Two – Rain in the Cotswolds & a River Walk

    Our second day was an escape to the Cotswolds, though the weather had other plans. Rain greeted for part of our trip and we missed the chance to walk Arlington Row, but we still made the most of the day. The charming villages offered a bit of retail therapy, and the warmth of little shops and cafés made up for the wet weather.

    Back at the hotel, we settled in for a cozy evening—watched a movie, made ourselves a home-cooked meal, and later enjoyed a peaceful walk along the river, crossing London Bridge and looping back over Tower Bridge to our hotel. The city lights reflected beautifully on the water—a fitting close to two special days in London.

    Day 3 - After a hick up in planning Kel had us all packed ready to go to Dover to board our cruise, lucky we checked our tickets he was a day early, So we're made use of our time for exploring museum of Natural History and Victorian Albert museums.     Rotterdam

    We arrived in Rotterdam to the rare delight of a perfect summer’s day—clear skies, warm sun, and just seven hours to make the most of this vibrant Dutch city.

    With limited time, we opted for a self-guided walking tour. As we made our way toward the city, we met a delightful American couple, Alvin and Connie, whose company made the day even more enjoyable. Together, we navigated the easy and efficient Rotterdam tram network, heading straight into the heart of the city.

    Our first stop was the famous Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)—an architectural wonder that never fails to spark curiosity. We admired the tilted, geometric homes, and peeked into the open courtyard that reveals how cleverly they’re arranged.

    From there, we strolled along sections of Rotterdam’s inner canal waterways, enjoying the contrast of modern structures beside tranquil water reflections. The city’s blend of innovation and calm was on full display.
