    Breakfast at the Swiss Bakery

    Before our trip to Whistler we went for breakfast at a nice place in Valemount, called the Swiss Bakery. At the edge of the town, this cute little and very busy place offered everything one can ask for to start into the day. We had a nice breakfast and are now on the road again.

    Vor unserer langen Fahrt nach Whistler trafen wir Killer und Karen noch fürs Frühstück in einer kleinen Bäckerei am Rande der Kleinstadt Valmount. Es scheint der Spot der Stadt für Frühstück zu sein, denn die Laufkundschaft war enorm. Wir haben lecker gefrühstückt, bisschen gequatscht und sind nun wieder auf dem Weg.    Read more

    Stopp at Spahats Creek Falls

    On our way to Whistler we stopped at Spahats Creek Falls at Wells Gray Provincial Park. A nice view and stop to walk a little in between hours of driving.

    Day 27

    Long drive but with a view

    650 kilometers - 8 hours of driving:
    The roads on our way to Whistler reminded us a lot of the European Alps and “Eifeler Landstraßen” - bend after bend and narrow roads close to very high mountain faces. Nothing compared to our German Autobahn 🤣. Besides the exhausting long drive for Matthias, the drive was absolutely scenic - not as scenic as the drive from
    Banff to Jasper, but still very nice. Just before 9pm we stopped to make the car ready for the first night in it. Our mattress perfectly fit into the back of the SUV and we were happy to sleep in our “home on wheels” for the first time 😍 later.

    650 Kilometer - 8 Stunden Fahrt: die Straßen auf unserem Weg nach Whistler erinnerten uns sehr an die Alpen und unsere „Eifeler Landstraßen“ - Eine Kurve nach der Anderen und enge Straßen nah an riesigen Bergwänden. Nichts im Vergleich zu unseren deutschen Autobahnen🤣. Neben der anstrengenden langen Fahrt für Matthias, war die Landschaft ziemlich malerisch - nicht so atemberaubend wie die Landschaft in Banff und Jasper, aber dennoch sehr nett. Um knapp 21 Uhr waren wir bereit für die Nacht zu stoppen und das Auto bereit für die erste Nacht zu machen. Unsere Matratze passte perfekt hinten in den Kofferraum und wir waren glücklich im unsere erste Nacht im „Haus auf Rädern“ zu verbringen. Natürlich auch noch die Hotelkosten zu sparen 🤪    Read more

    Day 28

    A day in Whistler

    July 20, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Our first night in the back of the car was different than expected 😅. Our mattress deflated itself due to a hole at 3 am. So our night was over earlier than we wanted it to be. Nevertheless we made it to Whistler! Just 50 km left to drive. After a lack of sleep comprehending breakfast 🍳 at a little locally owned diner, we went to The Lost Lake. There we found the little hole in our mattress and fixed it (hopefully 🤣). Moreover we took a little hike and relaxeder the lake ☀️.

    Unsere erste Nacht auf der Rückbank unseres Autos war anders als erwartet 😅. Unsere Luftmatratze entleerte sich selbst aufgrund eines Lochs um ca. 3 Uhr nachts. Demnach war unsere Nacht früher vorbei als wir wollten. Dennoch schafften wir es nach Whistler! Nur noch 50 km zu fahren und wir erreichten Whistler. Nach einem, für die schlaflose Nacht wiedergutmachenden Frühstück 🍳 bei einem lokal betriebenen Diner, gingen wir zum Lost Lake. Dort fanden wir zum Glück das kleine Loch in unserer Matratze und versuchten es zu flicke - mal schauen ob das geklappt hat 🤣. Außerdem wanderten wir ein wenig um den See und entspannten uns danach am Ufer ☀️.    Read more

    Vancouver Island

    July 21, 2019 ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    6:25 am and we’re taking the ferry towards Vancouver Island. 💪🏼
    On our way a whale appears in front of the ferry and catches everybody’s attention 😍
    Super tired, after another night on our broken mattress, we can’t wait for Vancouver Island and our first stop for the day: Tofino.

    Auf dem Weg kreuzt ein Wal das Boot und zieht die gesamte Aufmerksamkeit auf sich 😍. Trotz absoluter Müdigkeit nach einer weiteren Nacht auf unserer kaputten Matratze, können wir die Zeit auf Vancouver Island und unserm ersten Halt „Tofino“ nicht mehr erwarten.    Read more

    Day 29

    Tofino: Whale Watching

    Our first day on Vancouver Island: we decided to drive to Tofino to go on a whale watching tour 🐋. At 12:30 pm our guide took us to different little Islands of Vancouver Island. First Stopp: Vargas Island - a very big Island with some native people living there. We learned that also a pack of wolves 🐺lives on Vargas Island. We also spotted a huge grey whale 🐋- her name is Big White. She is very popular around Vancouver Island, because she’s lived there for over 40 years. After the winter always returning to this particular spot. It was stunning to see how organized she fed - breathing every 4 minutes around 5 times and then feeding for 4 minutes again. Also interesting: she is feeding in shallow water approximately 13 meters deep.
    After Big White we drove around the island a little more and spotted male and female sea lions, sea otters with their little kids, a puffin and a bald eagle 🦅. Amazing 😍 and the sea lions and sea otter looked so cute!!

    Unser erster Tag auf Vancouver Island: Wir beschlossen nach Tofino zu fahren, um eine Walbeobachtungstour zu machen 🐋. Um 12.30 Uhr ging es los und uns unser Guide zu verschiedenen kleinen Inseln von Vancouver Island.
    Erste Station: Vargas Island - eine ziemlich große Insel, auf der einige Ureinwohner leben. Kajaks brauchen ca drei Tage um einmal rum zu paddeln. Wir haben erfahren, dass auch ein Rudel Wölfe auf der Insel Vargas lebt 🐺. Auch haben wir einen riesigen Grauwal entdeckt - ihr Name ist Big White. 🤩 Sie ist auf Vancouver Island bereits super bekannt, da sie seit über 40 Jahren immer wieder bei Vancouver Island an der gleichen Stelle lebt. Es war unbeschreiblich zu sehen, wie pünktlich sie aß und atmete - sie atmete etwa fünfmal alle vier Minuten und tauchte dann wieder für vier Minuten nach Essen. Interessant ist auch, dass sie in ungefähr 13 Meter tiefen Wasser frisst.
    Nach Big White fuhren wir ein wenig weiter um die Insel und entdeckten männliche und weibliche Seelöwen, Seeotter mit ihren kleinen Kindern, einen Papageientaucher und einen Weißkopfseeadler. Unglaublich!😍 und die Seelöwen und der Seeotter sahen auchnoch so süß aus !!    Read more

    Enjoying luxury once more

    For our time on Vancouver Island we are allowed to stay at another of our friends places. The condo is located in Comox with an amazing view of the harbour and waterfront. We can’t believe how lucky we are! We would probably never stay in a place like this by ourselves 🤩. Finally we had a good night of sleep 🛏 and a home made breakfast. After all this driving and sleeping in cars lately, we will enjoy a couple of days relaxing 😌.

    Während unserer Zeit auf Vancouver Island dürfen wir in einem weiteren Apartment von Grant übernachten. Die Wohnung befindet sich in Comox mit einem tollen Blick auf den Hafen und das Wasser. Wir können nicht glauben, wie viel Glück wir haben! Wir würden wahrscheinlich niemals an einem solchen Ort wohnen 🤩. Außerdem hatten wir endlich eine gute Nacht und ein hausgemachtes Frühstück. Nach all dem Autofahren und Schlafen im Auto in der letzten Zeit, werden wir hier ein paar entspannte Tage genießen 😌.    Read more

    Day 32

    800 year old trees

    July 24, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    After having a relaxed day at the beach yesterday, we decided to do some „sightseeing“ on Vancouver Island today. We went to MacMillan Provincial Park and Cathedral Grove to see some of the eldest Douglas Fir 🌲 in the world. The small area was easy to walk through and stunning to see how big these trees actually are. They are way taller than The Leaning Tower of Pisa! 76 Meters! And super wide as well. The pictures do not even tell the size of these giants 🤩.
    Afterwards we went to Coombs a small town in the east side of Vancouver Island and visited the Goats on the Roof Old Farmers Market - Yes it is called that name because there are actual Goats 🐐 living on top of the market😅. So funny to see!

    Nachdem wir gestern einen entspannten Tag am Strand verbracht hatten, beschlossen wir heute auf Vancouver Island „Sightseeing“ zu machen. Wir fuhren zum MacMillan Provincial Park und zum Cathedral Grove, um einige der ältesten Douglas-Tannen der Welt zu sehen. Das kleine Gebiet war schön und leicht zu durchlaufen und absolut atemberaubend zu sehen, wie groß diese Bäume tatsächlich sind. Sie sind viel höher als der schiefe Turm von Pisa! 76 Meter! Und super dick! Die Bilder zeigen die Größe dieser Riesen kaum.

    Danach fuhren wir nach Coombs, einer kleinen Stadt auf der Ostseite von Vancouver Island, und besuchten den Goats on the Roof Old Farmers Market - der seinen charmanten Namen daher tragt, da tatsächlich Ziegen auf dem Dach leben! 🐐So lustig zu sehen!😅    Read more

    Victoria and the sea

    July 26, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Victoria - the capital of British Columbia: walking through Beacon Hill Park, seeing the tallest free standing Totem and then happen to be at the coast with an amazing view of the sea and the glaciers behind 🌊😍. After that we drove passed the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia and to Fisherman’s Wharf for a famous fish and chips dinner.

    Victoria - die Hauptstadt von Britisch Columbia: erst ein bisschen durch Beacon Hill Park gelaufen, dabei den höchsten frei stehenden Totem gesehen und dann ganz spontan am Wasser gelandet 😍🌊 und eine traumhafte Aussicht aufs Meer und die Berge 🏔 im Hintergrund gehabt. Danach fuhren wir vorbei an dem Parlament Gebäude von BC und zum
    Fisherman’s Wharf für ein köstliches traditionelles Fish and Chips Dinner 🤩.    Read more

    Vancouver - Celebration of Light

    Our first day in Vancouver and again we get lucky: it’s Vancouvers turn to participate in the international Celebration of Light. 🎆🎇
    It seemed like all of Vancouver came together at English Bay Beach to watch the fireworks. Before the spectacle, we sat in the sand waiting and playing some golf.
    The waiting was worth it - the show was absolutely amazing and the setting perfect!

    Unser erster Tag in Vancouver und wieder einmal haben wir Backpacker Glück: heute ist Vancouver an der Reihe bei der internationalen Celebration of Lights anzutreten 🎆🎇. Es schien uns als wäre ganz Vancouver am English Bay Beach zusammengekommen, um das Feuerwerk zu gucken. Bis zum großen Spektakel verbrachten wir die Zeit mit Golf spielen. Das Warten hatte sich gelohnt - die Show war absolut atemberaubend und das ganze Setting am Wasser einfach perfekt 🥰    Read more
