  • Accidental Lake

    September 19, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Bored of driving and spent too long at the shop so we set the sat nav for the nearest campsite. Ended up on the edge of another huge lake with many villages and nature reserves on its shores. Perfect for cycling and swimming. Weather currently between vindaloo and phaal.
Side note: 2 loaves is far too much for breakfast.

Another lake to add to the list. Why do people even bother putting salt in the sea. So much better without.
Smaller lake this time and less developed.
Did I mention there was a lake?

  • Can't seem to leave Castellane

    September 29, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Using our new found feet driven transport technique we set ourselves off for a well planned and prepared footspedition. Several "steps" we discover the land is now private. So a random amble in the other direction sees us passing through small mountain communities and discovering that when golden retrievers are triple their usual size and left alone with sheep they are not always friendly. Next the steppometer took us to a strange monastery of the Union of all religions - including "cosmic jesus" with a Ray gun shooting fire a few meters from vishnu who was a few meters away from Buddha - seemed like our kinda cult but unfortunately their gates opened at precisely 3.30 and 4.15 and our treadmakers weren't updated to time travel so on we went, and finally reached the end of the gravel motorway at quite possibly the greatest view mother nature has to offer- will confirm this in due course. All in all don't hike in a heat wave in the south of France at midday.Read more

  • Sentier blanc-martel

    October 3, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

An excursion that we'd heard described as the best hike in France, through the biggest gorge in Europe that itself is part of a wildlife sanctuary seemed like it could offer some sensual treats of the visual variety. Unfortunately the night before we discovered the shuttle bus was not running and the taxi chap was on holiday so instead we decided to fall back on our greatest natural skill... Getting drunk in a carpark.
A 7am wakeup sees a hungover jess giving the taxi one last try, fortunately we discover he's back to work today and the fare is Half what we were expecting and a with a little research I discover the tap by the carpark is 100% legitimate bona-fide drinking water. So in a hurried state we load our bags with pasta, several liters of spring water and enough chocolate to besiege a small town. We make our way to the pickup point and are soon on our way in a taxi packed with other hikers zooming along a winding road that at times seems to be hanging off cliffs that are atleast too big, possibly bigger. As we make our way down into the gorge to the river bed it's as if we've been dropped into jurassic Park on steroids. Sheer cliff faces, some reaching up over 500 meters are speckled with a diverse range of vines, trees, shrubs and other as yet unidentified flora. The crystal clear waters of the river at times seeming so tranquil with azure blue pools yet there are signs off its power everywhere though most of them involve looking up the cliff at the time line of erosion dating back tens of millions of years. Snakes, vultures and some sort of praying mantis all show up just to add to the confusion as to where in the world we might be. We covered the 12.7km trail in a little under 5 hours excluding a serious pasta session, the chocolate turned out to be surplus to requirements but thanked us for taking it on the journey. A 700m long dark tunnel, 253 stairs steeper than a telephone pole sticking out hundreds of meters up the face of the cliff were some of the adrenaline highlights but overall the winner has to be the detour down to mescla point where the Verdon river meets up with its pal the L'artuby. Hopes were pretty high but were met and exceeded approximately every 4-5 seconds.

  • Lac du saint croix and so forth

    October 6, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A few things rolled into on bite size chunk, if your bites are capable of consuming 11km lakes.
We realised that it had been a few days since we saw a lake so on we went to the aforementioned body of water.
Here we found yet another cross loving building on a large rock based foundation, this time round we werent gonna be fooled into climbing it incase jesus was home and simply enjoyed the town and its fried potatoes cut into a stick like fashion; I don't think it will catch on. We then upgraded our shoes to include a boat, always handy when planing a trip up a river, and peddled ourselved and a picnic up the gorge for one last oggle at its majesty. After that we visited a few different towns round the lake though it seemed people had forgotten to be human because some of them were only inhabited by cats.

Now to head back to civilization with actual people because the van needs some loving that only a mechanic can provide and we're yet to meet a cat that can even operate a toaster let alone fix a van.
Ps. Found ourselves at a triathlon called nature man, so we felt compelled to get fit and better ourselves. We did this by eating pizza at the finish line.
